Urgent care clinics are a great choice for obtaining convenient medical care. As these centers continue to grow in popularity, it may seem that everyone and their brother are using these facilities for their medical needs. While urgent care centers provide many attractive benefits, namely convenience, they won't be the right choice for everyone. Thus, before you decide to visit an urgent care clinic, here are several important considerations to keep in mind to ensure that you receive the most appropriate care for your situation.

1.) How Severe Is My Condition?

One of the first things to assess is whether your medical issue warrants a visit to an urgent care center. Urgent care is typically equipped to handle non-life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention, such as minor fractures, sprains, cuts, burns, fevers, or infections. However, if you are experiencing severe or life-threatening symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke (like facial drooping or slurred speech), or uncontrolled bleeding, it is crucial to seek emergency medical services immediately. Assessing the severity of your condition can help you determine whether urgent care is appropriate or if you should head directly to the emergency room for more comprehensive treatment. Ultimately, choosing the right type of care ensures that you receive the treatment you need without delay.

2.) What Are the Hours of Operation?

Urgent care clinics often have extended hours, which makes them a convenient option outside of normal medical hours. However, it’s important to verify the specific hours of the clinic you plan to visit. Some urgent care facilities may close earlier than expected or have limited hours on weekends and holidays. Henceforth, planning your visit accordingly can save you time and prevent unnecessary frustration. Before heading out, check online or call the clinic to confirm their hours of operation, especially if you are seeking services very late in the evening. Ultimately, doing your due diligence can help ensure that you are able to receive a prompt, appropriate care even if illness strikes at a less-than-ideal time.

3.) What Services Are Offered?

Not all urgent care centers provide the same range of services. While some centers only handle common ailments and minor injuries, many offer additional services such as laboratory testing, x -rays, vaccinations, and even occupational health services. Henceforth, prior to visiting an urgent care clinic, it's essential to check whether they offer the specific services you need. For example, if you require a particular treatment or diagnostic test, search online to locate a clinic that offers these services. Ultimately, this can save you time and help avoid disappointment if you arrive only to find that the necessary services are not available.

4.) Does My Insurance Require a Referral for Urgent Care?

Before heading to an urgent care clinic, it's wise to check your insurance policy to verify coverage and ensure that the visit will be covered. Be advised that some plans may require prior authorization or a referral from your primary care physician in order to be covered by insurance. Understanding your insurance requirements ahead of time can ensure that you get the care you need without unexpected out-of-pocket expenses. Thus, if you're uncertain of your coverages and the requirements of your insurer, contacting them for clarification can help you understand your coverage and any potential costs involved. Moreover, be aware that some conditions may not be fully covered or may have different copayment amounts compared to regular office visits. Ultimately, being aware of these details in advance can make your visit smoother, more affordable, and less stressful.

5.) What Should I Bring?

When visiting an urgent care center, it can be helpful to come prepared with necessary documentation such as your insurance card, a valid form of identification, and any relevant medical records or documentation related to your current condition. If you are on any medications, make a list of them, including dosages and frequency. This information can assist the healthcare providers in making informed decisions about your treatment. Additionally, if you have allergies or a history of medical conditions, be sure to communicate these details to the staff. Having all this information readily available can expedite your visit and ensure that you receive appropriate care tailored to your needs.

6.) Can I Be Seen by An Urgent Care Provider Without Insurance?

If you lack insurance, urgent care services can still be a good option for receiving medical attention. As a matter of fact, the majority of urgent care clinics accept patients regardless of their insurance status and typically offer affordable self-pay options. Despite this, it's important to be aware that the cost of services may vary widely between facilities. As such, it’s advisable to inquire about pricing before your visit to avoid unexpected costs and allow you to compare pricing between various clinics. It may be helpful to choose a clinic that offers sliding scale fees based on income or payment plans to help manage costs. Regardless of your insurance status, don’t hesitate to seek care at an urgent care clinic, but be sure to ask about any costs associated with the services you may need. Ultimately, being informed prior to receiving care can help you make the best choice in where to receive medical attention.

7.) What Are the Wait Times Like?

One of the advantages of going to an urgent care clinic is that they generally provide shorter wait times compared to emergency rooms. Despite this, wait times can vary significantly based on factors such as the time of day and the clinic's location. As such, it's not uncommon for urgent care clinics to experience peak hours during evenings and weekends when many people seek care outside of regular office hours. Thus, if you're concerned about wait times, consider calling ahead to ask about current patient loads or utilizing online check-in services that some clinics offer, to ensure that the clinic you visit has a wait time you are comfortable with. Some urgent care facilities provide estimated wait times on their websites or through mobile apps, which can provide added convenience when planning your visit. By being aware of these factors, you can set realistic expectations and reduce frustration surrounding your visit.

In conclusion, visiting an urgent care clinic can be a convenient option for receiving prompt medical attention; however, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth experience. By understanding your insurance coverage, bringing necessary documentation, inquiring about costs if you are uninsured, and being mindful of potential wait times, you can navigate the urgent care process more effectively. It’s important to remember that while urgent care clinics are designed to provide quicker service than traditional emergency rooms, being prepared can enhance your overall experience and ensure that you receive appropriate, timely, and comprehensive care!

As a small nonprofit, BHC relies on the generosity of its community to continue expanding its impact and maintaining safe, affordable housing for residents. Educators encouraged to sign up for free program that brings interactive ag learning experience to PreK-12 students

Students across Colorado have the opportunity to learn about the profound impact that agriculture icon Dr. John Matsushima has had on modern farming and ranching practices through the new book “Cattle, Corn and Courage,” written by Rachel Gabel and illustrated by Liz Banman Munsterteiger. Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom’s (CoATIC) annual Literacy Project is offering classrooms statewide a free kit filled with interactive activities and corresponding educational resources to teach preK-12 students about Colorado agriculture.

For 2025, two class kits will be available – one for elementary level students and one for middle/high school students. The kits will include a variety of interactive activities such as a beef tasting experience and lesson in beef nutrition; a whole dent corn and steam-flaked corn sensory activity; a corn seed germination experiment; and access to videos and a virtual field trip to History Colorado Center in Denver. These diverse educational projects align with academic standards thereby making it easier for teachers to incorporate them into busy curriculum schedules.

“Through our 2025 Literacy Project and ‘Cattle, Corn and Courage’ book, we hope to introduce a new generation of students to Dr. Matsushima’s deep impact in ag science so they will gain an appreciation for the myriad of ways agriculture is integral to the fabric of our state,” says Jennifer Scharpe, executive director for CoAITC.

Dr. Matsushima, a 103-year-old Colorado native, is the son of Japanese immigrants and was raised on a family farm in Platteville, Colo. Dr. Matsushima spent more than six decades at Colorado State University as a student, professor and researcher. He battled bigotry and poverty on his path to becoming a legendary scientist in beef cattle nutrition whose innovations have influenced the global food system.

Hannah Bouchard, an educator from Platte Valley Elementary, is an enthusiastic supporter of the annual project. “Thank you for continuing to provide this important program. Our students love it, and I look forward to receiving the resources every year. It helps young minds better understand the critical role that agriculture plays in Colorado.”

Due to previous demand for CoAITC Literacy Kits, educators are encouraged to sign up for the kits here as supplies are limited.

Through partnerships and funding from corporations, foundations, and individuals, all CoAITC programs and resources are provided for free or at minimal cost. Those interested in donating can do so here.

2021 continues to be an “exceptional” year, in just about every conceivable way.

From elections to epidemics, we’ve seen events and situations during this calendar year most of us have not seen in our lifetimes… and that most never expected to see.

While it might be foolish not to acknowledge the unusual aspects of 2021, it’s important not to “give up” on the notion of normalcy in every part of our lives.

Your family medical practitioners want you and your family to live as healthy and happy a life as you can.

This means, of course, exercising the right amount of caution (without an overabundance of fear) with regard to some of the exceptional aspects of 2021 – such as the COVID-19 pandemic and our society’s reaction to it.

But it also means maintaining a consistent approach to the regular habits that keep your family healthy and living a life of high vitality.

Making sure to maintain your exercise routine… getting enough sleep… drinking enough water… taking your vitamins and being vigilant with personal hygiene… these are all important habits for the whole family.

And, with the holidays (and their traditional feasts) approaching, it’s worth taking a renewed look at your nutritional needs, and those of the rest of the family.

Are You Getting Too Much Junk… And Not Enough Energy?

Without a doubt, it’s been a stressful few months.  And when stress is high, some people and families tend to over-rely on the convenience of fast food and “junk” snacks when hunger pangs arise.

Alcoholism and other addictions are on the rise, too, as people attempt to “self-medicate” through the most stressful times.

Overeating is also more prevalent today.  You’ve heard the old expression about “eating your feelings” – it’s a real problem during times of high stress.

Unfortunately, these problems tend to compound as the stress stretches out over time.  For instance, studies have shown that snacks high in processed carbohydrates tend to create cravings for themselves.  Remember the “No one can eat just one” ads for a national brand of potato chips?

One drink too often leads to another… and when the family seems to enjoy a fast-food meal and the stress seems to diminish, it’s easy to make visiting the drive-through part of the family routine, rather than an exceptional event.

But when you fall into a pattern of poor nutrition, it’s often hard to find your way back to the good stuff.

Your Family Doctors Have Some Suggestions

Here are a few ideas to help you battle your way back to a “normal,” healthy diet for yourself and the family:

  • Try fasting.  If you can endure a water fast for even one day, the cleansing effects can be significant, and some of those cravings will diminish.  Many people report that the first few hours of fasting are difficult, but that the next morning, they wake with better energy and less desire for junk food or alcohol.  And if you can go two or three days, you might surprise yourself with how much good you can do for your body.

  • Put yourself on a quota.  If you find it too difficult to cut out a favorite food or drink completely, try establishing a limit and sticking to it.  Some people find “trade-outs” effective, allowing themselves a “treat” as long as it’s accompanied by something healthy: a full glass of water for every glass of wine; a serving of vegetables for every salty or sugary snack.

  • Keep a journal.  Many patients report that they had no idea how far they’d gone “off track” until they wrote down everything they ate or drank… often, patients have a hard time believing what (and how much) they’re actually consuming until they review a well-kept journal.

  • Take junk food off the shopping list.  It can be powerful to run out of junky treats, and be left with nothing but healthy, nutritious food when the munchies strike!

  • Supplement your diet.  You can go overboard with supplements and vitamin pills… but until you’re able to get back on track with a healthy diet, it’s not a bad idea to take at least one good multi-vitamin, and to make that a disciplined part of your daily routine.

Call your family clinic for more great ideas.  Your personal family medical practitioners not only know what’s generally good in terms of health practices… they know you, they know your family, and they probably know what will work best for you specifically.  They want you to stay healthy, and that means keeping you and your family well (and properly) fed.
