Consumer’s Interest High at Community Banks

It took $4 gasoline to get folks to think about their driving habits. Similarly, it looks like a meltdown of the megabanks and other financial institutions is prompting consumers to think about where they are putting their money, who they can trust and what results they should expect. And much of their hard earned cash is flowing into deposits at community banks:• According to the FDIC, banks with less than $10 billion in assets, community banks, have seen an increase in deposit growth this year from a minus 0.77% in Q1 to a positive 2.06% in Q3. Larger banks witnessed a 3.81% decline in growth of deposits for the same period.• The Federal Reserve reported that October deposits and lending at community banks outpaced the overall industry. Between October 1 and October 22, community banks saw deposits rise 1.1 percent, or nearly $27 billion, to more than $2.4 trillion. For the same period, the nation’s 30 largest U.S. chartered banks saw $44 billion, or 1.2 percent of deposits, walk out the door, leaving them with less than $3.8 trillion.• REWARDChecking, a free checking account offered by more than 450 community financial institutions across the country, reported a 96% jump in deposits in the third quarter of this year.“Through products like REWARDChecking, community financial institutions are winning back customers from the faltering megabanks and investment houses,” said Don Shafer, Chairman of BancVue, a leading provider of products and consulting to community banking institutions. “Americans are indicating that they enjoy investing their money locally, and they benefit from high yields, fiscal safety and customer service.”Higher yields on short term deposits like those found on CheckingFinder.com are certainly fueling interest in community banks. Month-to-month applications on CheckingFinder.com (https://www.checkingfinder.com/), a website that connects consumers with community financial institutions offering high-yield checking accounts, jumped 14% from July to August, 46% from August to September, and 53% from September to October. A small sampling of applicants on the site indicated nearly seven out of 10 were moving their funds to community financial institutions from large banks.Examples of the yields found at community banks compared to those higher yielding shorter term deposits at megabanks (as of December 15) includes:COMMUNITY BANKS YIELDS PRODUCTSCommunity Bank of Pleasant Hill, MO; 6.10%; High-yield CheckingFirst Robinson Bank, IL; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingLegence Bank, IL; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingCommunity Bank of Raymore, MO; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingThree Rivers FCU, IN; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingFlorida Central Credit Union, FL; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingUnion State Bank/Bank of Atchison, KS; 6.01%; High-yield CheckingBank of Granite, NC; 6.00%; High-yield CheckingMEGABANKSWAMU; 5.00%; CD (5 years)eLoan; 4.75%; CD (6 years)Schwab; 3.60%; CD (18 months)ING; 3.75%; CD (1 year)HSBC; 3.50%; CD (1 year)Countrywide (BofA); 3.10%; CD (9 months)eTRADE; 2.25%; CD (12 month)“Three years ago the issue of 'how secure is my money?' was literally not on the consumer’s radar; today, the future viability of the nation’s largest banks is,” continued Shafer. “Not so with community banking, a system that has endeared trust by its roots and not by its branches.”

Integrated Asset Services, LLC (IAS, www.iasreo.com), a leader in default management and residential collateral valuation, today released its IAS360™ House Price Index for October 2008. The monthly report, which includes the most current and granular data available in the industry, showed a 1.7% decline in house prices on a national level in October, with an annual decline of 12.9% versus a 13.3% decline in September.Denver, MSA house prices were down 1.2% in October and 15.3% year-over-year. Adams County saw an uptick of 0.2% in October but continues to decline year-over-year at a rate of 20.3%. Denver County continued to add to an already weak housing market with a decline of 2.5% in October and 21.4% year-over-year (see table below for more Denver metro area counties).Housing prices at the national level continue to look bleak. At the census region level, results for October show all four U.S. Census regions experiencing declines in house prices, with the South and West experiencing double digit declines year-over-year of 10.2% and 18.7%, respectively. Compared to October of 2007; Midwestern, Northeastern and Western regions saw a slight improvement in the rate of decline during October 2008, posting 1.5 %, 1.8% and 1.4% declines in house prices respectively. Finally, the Southern region continued to fall amid a weakened housing market.During the month of October, all nine U.S. Census Divisions posted declines. Mountain, Pacific and South Atlantic census divisions posted double digit year-over-year declines of 12.4 %, 20.0% and 10.6%, respectively. East North Central and West South Central divisions continued to hold steady with slight annual declines of 2.4% and 1.7 %.“We’re continuing to see a decline in housing prices across the country and at the county level. That said, we’re also seeing some signs of strengthening in counties that are located in ground zero states of the housing crisis,” said Dave McCarthy, President and CEO of Integrated Asset Services. “With the IAS360 and the other granular Integrated Asset Services iMVI data, we are keeping a close eye on the counties within hard hit states, because it’s the counties that will be the harbinger of signs of a market recovery.”States that have been hard hit by the housing crisis, such as Arizona and Florida, are seeing some counties appreciate in house prices. The IAS360 House Price Index is a comprehensive housing index tracking monthly change in the median sales price of detached single-family residences across the U.S. The index, based on all arms-length transactions, tracks data of 15,000 “neighborhoods”, which is rolled-up to report on the changes in 360 counties, nine census divisions, four regions, and the nation overall. The IAS360 House Price Index is delivered on a monthly basis.Leveraging real time data and nationwide resources, Integrated Asset Services' high-tech and high-touch product lines, (www.iasreo.com/risk.html), offer an unmatched level of detail in a rapidly changing housing environment. IAS reports on "neighborhood" level house price trends, residential market climate and collateral valuation. On weekends until Christmas you will find the Legacy Cheerleaders at the FlatIrons Mall in Broomfield, helping the Kids Pages Holiday Hope at Home Program provide much-needed clothing, personal items, household items and wished-for toys to local children and families who would otherwise go without holiday gifts and necessities. This is the 6th Annual Holiday Giving Program that Kids Pages Cares has held at Christmastime to help give families a loving "hand-up" not a "hand out." The families that receive assistance from Kids' Pages Cares have encountered difficult circumstances, the loss of a job, an illness or injury, a disabled child, a disaster such as a fire, parental abandonment (grandparents and other family members taking custody of children). By receiving referrals directly from school administrators, they insure that the assistance is going to children and families that really need it and will make good use of the help. The Legacy Cheerleaders have "volunteered" their time during this Holiday Season to be at the Kids Pages Booth at the FlatIrons Mall to help people adopt a family or child from one of the Angel Trees around the booth. These girls have given up their free time to help make sure that this program collects as many toys, clothes and gift cards as possible during mall hours. The girls are rotating their time, and you can meet the cheerleaders and adopt a family on the weekends and on Monday and Tuesday before Christmas Day. These Award winning Cheerleaders are really proving that they know the meaning of giving back to their community. You will find the Kids Pages Cares booth in the FlatIrons Mall Food Court, right next to the Customer Service booth by the doors exiting to the outdoor ice rink.

Marshall was instrumental in forging frameworks by 180 governments reinforcing the tenet that women's rights are human rights and developing action steps for governments and civil society to take to promote health, education and economic security for women. She has spent the last ten years advocating for women's heath in Colorado and in Washington – including helping to shape the U.S. response to the global HIV/AIDS crisis so that it better addresses the way the pandemic is affecting women and youth. She has been an advocate for sound policies in Colorado to make needed investments in education and to protect women’s health rights. Marshall was nominated for the 2008 United Nations International Human Rights Award. The Zonta Foothills award included a contribution in Marshall’s name to the Bev Hackbart Scholarship, which provides tuition support to a single parent attending the University of Colorado – a project of the Zonta Foothills Club, of which Marshall is a member.

Annual publication 2008 Europe - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Balkans (East) profiles the region’s three largest countries: Greece, Bulgaria and Romania.Impacting on the telecom markets of these three countries is EU-mandated competition, decreasing prices and leading to the introduction of new services by both competing operators and incumbents alike. This report offers an informative insight into the Balkans (East) region, covering regulatory developments, major players in the fixed-line, broadband, convergence and mobile markets, the development of new product offerings for the aforementioned markets, as well as presenting a wide variety of industry-related statistics in addition to broadband penetration forecasts to the year 2018.Key highlights:• Customer churn levels and the level of competition is expected to increase in Romania in 2009 following the introduction of number portability for both the fixed and mobile markets in October 2008. For the country overview, see chapter 3, page 55.• Competition in Bulgaria and Romania will improve in the future as each country’s respective regulator completes market analyses during 2009/10 and imposes obligations on SMP operators (ie, incumbents) to improve competition, particularly in fixed-line markets.• Healthy infrastructure-based competition exists in the broadband markets of Bulgaria and Romania due to well established cable TV providers as well as a large number of informal LANs.• Within Greece the actions of the regulator has improved the wholesale market, with wholesale accounting for over 40% of total DSL connections, the overarching technology platform for broadband access in Greece. For the country overview, see chapter 2, page 26.• The state of the wholesale DSL market in Bulgaria and Romania is expected to pick up once regulators complete market analyses during 2009/10 and oblige incumbents to offer network access.• IPTV take up is on the rise in all three countries, as incumbents and telecom operators acquire additional content and improve service offerings. In Bulgaria and Romania cable operators are fighting back by launching triple play offerings.• Mobile operators have once again focused on mobile data, leveraging now widely-available EDGE/WCDMA/HSDPA networks to launch aggressively priced mobile broadband access with prepaid data bundles.• With mobile voice markets at saturation, the underdeveloped mobile broadband market is the new revenue growth opportunity and hence competitive battleground for mobile operators, with competition expected to put downward pressure on tariffs in 2009 and beyond. This in turn will negatively impact other wireless broadband providers, particularly the WiMAX service providers, given the market power of the mobile operators and the reach of their networks.Balkans (East) – mobile subscribers and penetration rate – March 2008Country Subscribers PenetrationBulgaria 10,000,000 137%Greece 15,400,000 138%Romania 24,600,000 110%(Source: Based on ITU and Global Mobile data)This report Subjects include:Market and industry analyses, trends and developmentsFacts, figures, statistics and broadband forecasts to 2017Industry and regulatory issuesResearch, Marketing, BenchmarkingMajor Players, Revenues, Subscribers, Network deploymentsVoIP, ADSL, ADSL2+, FttH, LAN, WiFi, WiMAX, IPTV, VoD, triple play, digital TV, DTTV, 3G, i-mode and HSDPAFor more information please visit: http://www.bharatbook.com/productdetail.asp?id=84342Bharat Book Bureau207, Hermes Atrium, CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai - 400 614, India.Phone : +91 22 2757 8668 / 2757 9438Fax : +91 22 2757 9131E-mail : info@bharatbook.comWebsite : www.bharatbook.com

Cyber attacks have for some time been no longer in the realm of fiction or film, but a cause for concern in the real world. Although annoying acts such as website defacements and virus spread have become fairly common, the cyber attacks in the Baltic state of Estonia in early 2007 managed to disrupt that country's financial system for a few weeks. There were concerns that this could be just the tip of the iceberg in computer network attacks; certainly, it was an event that showed how effective attacks on IT networks and systems could be, even at national level. Certainly, the consequences would be much more significant if those attacks had occurred on a greater scale, attacking central computers in government, policing and defence, in a nation or group of nations. It has been suggested that those attacks were a foretaste of what dedicated hackers belonging to terrorist groups or hostile powers could do, constituting a new form of warfare - cyberwarfare. Such threats would be far more serious than those of amateur hackers, despite the inconvenience these have caused. Furthermore, professional hacking groups or cells are likely to be far harder to repel, locate, close down, capture and convict. The cyberwarfare market is already large and growing, with most of the spending at present devoted to cyber defence.Expects the market to grow consistently from 2008 onwards. Rumours of developing cyber offensive capabilities and actions will further induce nations to do more to protect their vital networks, as well as stimulate the development of cyberwarfare capabilities as a natural progression in defence. The interest is strong among many nations to develop or improve their abilities to deal with cyberwarfare, providing significant opportunities for companies involved in computer protection and IT systems hardware, software and services in general. There is now a realisation among many governments and militaries that "cyberspace" has become a new battleground, possibly on par with other recognised battle spaces in conventional warfare and defensive operations. This new report - Cyberwarfare, 2008-2018 - describes the present and potential market for defence cybersecurity and related defensive operations, with relevant data and informed opinion. This information is equally valuable to both defence procurement operations and to relevant technology providers. This report provides a market outlook for cyberwarfare, focusing on the following aspects:• Overview of the threats from cyber attacks as well as key tools and solutions.• A survey of cyber attack incidents and resulting programmes in key countries in Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific.• A discussion of factors that influence the development of the cyberwarfare market.• Key companies involved in the cyberwarfare market, including government and military cybersecurity.• Forecasts for the 12 leading national markets.• Experts’ views on the issues and outlook for cyberwarfare, including 5 full transcriptions of interviews with leading authorities.Believes that the cyberwarfare market has the capability to expand steadily from the present onwards throughout the foreseeable future. Governments and private organisations are preparing for the real threats of attacks at innumerable potential locations in their vast information systems networks. The increasing sophistication of, and growing reliance, on computer systems and networks by the military, government agencies and critical infrastructure makes security there imperative. Potentially, hostile forces could cause more disruption by those means than by conventional military and terrorist attacks, especially with heightened physical security after the September 11 attacks in the US and later bombings in Madrid and London.Believes that cybersecurity is among the key areas in which militaries and governments will invest significantly, despite the global economic downturn in 2008. Conventional thinking in governments and militaries is that prevention is far better than dealing with the consequences of breached information systems, whether the purpose is spying, disruption or destruction. The risks are simply too great, with IT security companies benefiting from this growing and potentially vast market. Furthermore, IT security is a fast-developing industry, where technological developments in hardware and software, combined with the development of hacking and virus-spreading techniques, demands constant development and updating, with large potential for long-term repeat sales of products and services. For more information please visit: http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=84451OrContact us at:Bharat Book Bureau207, Hermes Atrium, CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai - 400 614, India.Phone : +91 22 2757 8668 / 2757 9438Fax : +91 22 2757 9131E-mail : info@bharatbook.comWebsite : www.bharatbook.com
