31040797886?profile=originalUntil recently, International Women’s Day has remained largely in the shadows as a somewhat obscure holiday only recognized in a handful of countries and celebrated in even less. WIth the current political climate, it is no wonder that it has skyrocketed in popularity and become increasingly celebrated both here and abroad. However, in a time of loud protests and marches, it is refreshing to see a local aerial troupe celebrate International Women’s Day using aerial artistry and dance to celebrate the strength and power of women.

In the Wings was officially founded in January 2018 by Fallon Voorheis-Mathews. After dancing, choreographing, and teaching in another aerial company for many years, Voorheis-Mathews took up the challenge of creating her own company. Her troupe slowly came together over several months as she recruited six dedicated and very talented women all of whom she had danced with before in other companies and shows. The fact that all of the dancers are female is merely a happy coincidence.

As an all female aerial dance troupe it is only fitting that they scheduled their first official show celebrating women on International Women’s Day. The show is titled Divine: A Celebration of Women and focuses not only on the power and courage of women, but the challenges they face as well.

“I’ve always considered myself a feminist,” Voorheis-Mathews explained. “I work in professions that are dominated by females, but even so, I still feel that males have an edge. I wanted to focus on how we can continue to overcome and break through that proverbial glass ceiling. I feel that if we share our stories and experiences through dance and the arts we are able to better connect with the people around us and just maybe help people form a new understanding of what it is to be a woman.”

Voorheis-Mathews went on to explain that this show has become a platform for the dancers to process their own past traumas and the negative experiences of women they are close to. Company dancer Cecilia Potter Whyel choreographed a touching piece inspired by her mother who was deported from her native Philippines for being a devoted activist. Other company members dive into the sobering and dark experiences that relate to the #metoo movement.

One of Voorheis-Mathews favorite pieces that she choreographed and dances in focuses on female sensuality. She created this particular piece because she has always “struggled with owning my sexuality and sensuality.” Growing up in a religious household where you are told sensuality is bad and wrong had a profound negative affect on her. She created this piece as a way to try and let that go and understand that sensuality is a beautiful and powerful thing.

Not only does this show touch on the struggles of women, it also highlights the fun and empowerment of being a woman as well with a number of pieces. One piece is a fun interpretation of the “Cell Block Tango” from the musical Chicago. The show ends with an empowering piece set to Beyonce’s “Run the World”. Adding another fun and inclusive layer into the show, the host of the night is the local, well-known drag performer Alice Glamoure. Who better to help celebrate women than a fabulous drag queen? Overall, it is a well rounded show that expounds upon the struggles and joy of all women and definitely worth going to see on this upcoming International Women’s Day

You can see the show on March 8th and March 9th at 7:30 PM at the Boulder Circus Center. Reserved seating is available on Eventbrite. They are offering a ladies’ night out package with a discount on 4 tickets.

Wolcott and team win at 25 Hours of Thunderhill

Young driver wins E2 class at country’s longest sports car race

Race car driver Travis Wolcott finished off his season with another win in California, finishing 1st in his class at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, December 8-9th. He and his co-drivers raced a Mazda MX-5 specially prepared by Atlanta Motorsports Group in the country’s longest endurance sports car race.

This was Wolcott’s endurance sports car racing debut, and an important race for his career. Endurance racing requires much more stamina than sprint racing. Winning at Thunderhill is a challenge. The technical course and long hours took a toll on all competitors for over a full day of racing nonstop.

"I knew that if we could keep mistakes to a minimum, stay out of trouble, and run consistent, fast laps we had a car that could win. It’s a difficult race for everybody. There are so many cars of varying speeds and so many opportunities to lose focus. The most important thing is to stay sharp, " said Wolcott.

Wolcott shared driving duties with three other drivers in the #79 Mazda MX-5. Guy Laidig, Beau Borders, and Todd Launchbaugh each took stints in the car and together the whole team drove from 4th place in class all the way up to the race win, a full 20 laps ahead of their nearest rival.

"I’m thrilled to win the 25 Hours of Thunderhill on my first attempt. These are the kinds of challenges I like to set for myself as I progress. It was critical that I prepare for it properly and find myself with a crew that could get the job done. This is invaluable experience as I continue towards my goal of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans," said Wolcott.

Wolcott was coached through the course at Thunderhill by one of his Pirelli World Challenge competitors, Todd Lamb, who was driving another of Atlanta Motorsports Group’s MX-5s that weekend in a different class. Lamb has won at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, has competed in Grand-Am, and is a past Playboy MX-5 Cup Champion.

"We had six drivers entered in the 25 that had never seen Thunderhill before. It's a daunting track with blind corners and significant elevation changes. Travis stood out among the six as a true talent, soaking up information that I gave him on the proper lines and getting up to speed quickly on the 15 turn circuit. He and his co-drivers never put a wheel wrong over 25 hours, and it paid off with a win at a very challenging event," said Lamb.

Adding this win to his impressive first professional season in the Pirelli World Challenge, Wolcott is talking to sponsors, partners and others who have taken notice of his strong contention in different cars and conditions.

Milk For Muscle Growth

Milk has been promoted for ages to be a great supplier of calcium, necessary for bone growth and strength. The truth is, there are better food sources than milk but it is readily available, inexpensive and still a good product.

What you rarely hear people talking about is drinking milk for muscle growth and recovery after a workout. There is a movement out there that promotes low fat chocolate milk for a post workout drink and it's great for certain sports and athletes! It has the correct carb-protein ratio, tastes good and has many vital substances to aid recovery. For serious gains however, you will need more than chocolate milk. You would need high quantities in order to fulfill your body's need for growth (we are talking about weight lifting, high resistance training etc.).

Milk has its supporters and opponents, often both radical in their ideas. If you have seen 'Pumping Iron', the documentary about Arnold Schwarzenegger, then you probably noticed his reply to the question whether he drinks milk. If you didn't, this is what he said: 'Milk is for cows.'

And indeed it is. It is unnatural for an adult being to drink the milk of another species. However, that does not mean it is bad for you and no matter what, it is still a natural product and much better for you than any chemically produced supplements. If you have an intolerance or an allergy, you obviously do not want to start drinking high quantities of any milk whatsoever. It is also shown that different ethnic groups have a different tolerance towards milk.

Personally, I have always loved milk. I grew up with it and drank tons of milk growing up and I have never experienced any intolerance, which makes it easy for me.
Throughout the last few years, as I started doing more resistance training, I have realized the advantages of drinking milk for my recovery and progress. A few advantages:

- it is cheap, much cheaper than most other sources of protein
- it is readily available everywhere
- it provides high quality protein, both whey and casein so your body gets protein instantly with fast acting whey and progressively with the longer release time of casein
- the calcium in milk does not only give you strong bones but also helps relaxing your muscles. Too little calcium combined with intense activities may give your cramped muscles
- drinking a lot of milk has proven to cut fat (calcium also plays a role in fat mobilization, as well in reducing stress, lowering blood pressure etc.)

Arguments against milk:

- it has growth hormones, cancer causing steroids etc. in it because the farmers want their cows bigger and more productive

Yes, the growth hormone rBGH is used for higher milk production. This hormone however only works when injected. If ingested, our digestion tracts destroys these hormones. This does not justify the fact that the cows are being injected with it but it does not affect you when drinking milk. You can also buy milk from sources that guarantee not to use any hormones in their live stock (Whole Foods for example who sells antibiotic and hormone free milk).

- it makes me gain weight

Milk has been proven to lower cholesterol levels. Actually whole milk lowers levels more than skim milk! Milk also lowers the chances of getting a heart attack or stroke.

I mostly drink non fat milk since my calorie intake is pretty high and I gain easily. For a better ratio though, try 2% milk or even whole milk if you have a hard time gaining.

The quantity of milk you should drink varies. I go through about 2 gallons/week and have great gains with my training and diet combination. Other supporters of milk go through 1 or 2 gallons per day! It will completely depend on your diet, calorie intake, amount of protein, body type etc. But at least give milk a chance!
