31040797886?profile=originalUntil recently, International Women’s Day has remained largely in the shadows as a somewhat obscure holiday only recognized in a handful of countries and celebrated in even less. WIth the current political climate, it is no wonder that it has skyrocketed in popularity and become increasingly celebrated both here and abroad. However, in a time of loud protests and marches, it is refreshing to see a local aerial troupe celebrate International Women’s Day using aerial artistry and dance to celebrate the strength and power of women.

In the Wings was officially founded in January 2018 by Fallon Voorheis-Mathews. After dancing, choreographing, and teaching in another aerial company for many years, Voorheis-Mathews took up the challenge of creating her own company. Her troupe slowly came together over several months as she recruited six dedicated and very talented women all of whom she had danced with before in other companies and shows. The fact that all of the dancers are female is merely a happy coincidence.

As an all female aerial dance troupe it is only fitting that they scheduled their first official show celebrating women on International Women’s Day. The show is titled Divine: A Celebration of Women and focuses not only on the power and courage of women, but the challenges they face as well.

“I’ve always considered myself a feminist,” Voorheis-Mathews explained. “I work in professions that are dominated by females, but even so, I still feel that males have an edge. I wanted to focus on how we can continue to overcome and break through that proverbial glass ceiling. I feel that if we share our stories and experiences through dance and the arts we are able to better connect with the people around us and just maybe help people form a new understanding of what it is to be a woman.”

Voorheis-Mathews went on to explain that this show has become a platform for the dancers to process their own past traumas and the negative experiences of women they are close to. Company dancer Cecilia Potter Whyel choreographed a touching piece inspired by her mother who was deported from her native Philippines for being a devoted activist. Other company members dive into the sobering and dark experiences that relate to the #metoo movement.

One of Voorheis-Mathews favorite pieces that she choreographed and dances in focuses on female sensuality. She created this particular piece because she has always “struggled with owning my sexuality and sensuality.” Growing up in a religious household where you are told sensuality is bad and wrong had a profound negative affect on her. She created this piece as a way to try and let that go and understand that sensuality is a beautiful and powerful thing.

Not only does this show touch on the struggles of women, it also highlights the fun and empowerment of being a woman as well with a number of pieces. One piece is a fun interpretation of the “Cell Block Tango” from the musical Chicago. The show ends with an empowering piece set to Beyonce’s “Run the World”. Adding another fun and inclusive layer into the show, the host of the night is the local, well-known drag performer Alice Glamoure. Who better to help celebrate women than a fabulous drag queen? Overall, it is a well rounded show that expounds upon the struggles and joy of all women and definitely worth going to see on this upcoming International Women’s Day

You can see the show on March 8th and March 9th at 7:30 PM at the Boulder Circus Center. Reserved seating is available on Eventbrite. They are offering a ladies’ night out package with a discount on 4 tickets.

Boulder, CO: Today,  the Boulder Art Association announced that they will host Major Fredric Arnold, a 92-year-old Boulder-based sculptor and retired WWII P-38 Combat Fighter Pilot, as he reveals one of the life-size sculptures from his “Lest We Forget: The Mission” monument on Sept. 19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. Of his original 14 P-38 Fighter Group, 12 were killed.  Major Fredric Arnold is one of the two survivors. The sculpted artwork is part of a monument to honor the 88,000 airmen who lost their lives in WWII. Maj. Arnold will speak about the first of the 12 sculptures and conduct a book signing of his autobiographical work, Doorknob Five Two, at the presentation. The event will take place at the Boulder Art Association, 4800 Baseline Road, Suite B-103, Boulder, CO 80303.

“We are extremely honored as a local arts organization to have the opportunity to highlight Major Arnold’s artistic and military achievements,” said Rod Swanstrom, President of the Boulder Art Association, “We invite the entire community to experience Major Arnold’s first casting of his epic project at one of its first public showings before all 12 pieces come together for their final installation.  When attendees view his amazing work, they’ll also get the chance to meet Fredric and purchase his book, a chronicle of his experiences as a WWII pilot.”

Arnold’s Lest We Forget: The Mission includes 12 life-size fighter pilots at a mission briefing; Seven of the figures are alive and participating, while five, lighter in color than the rest, are pictured in full flight gear, as they would have looked when they were killed in action, evoking a feeling of distance and loss of life.

Of his inspiration for the sculpture, Arnold said, “Following my five month tour of duty in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, I was one of two pilots who survived from our original group of fourteen P-38 fighter pilots…Today, I’m the last guy standing and I’m determined to fulfill my commitment to honor their memory and give thanks to the less fortunate members of my class.”

When visitors attend the event, they can also view the artwork from September’s member art show,   an eclectic showing of art works in various mediums showing the variety and diverse styles of the BAA members. Both shows will run until Sept. 28.  The BAA is open Friday-Sunday, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The Coors Light Silver Bullet Train is speeding towards the most refreshing summer yet, with special beer packaging, memorable local events, exclusive social media campaigns, a talent search with Ice Cube, and much more. In addition, the seasonal celebration is literally painting the summer silver with a fresh focus on local 3D art by world-renowned artists.  In this time-lapse video that is sure to give you goose-bumps, watch a Coors Light Silver Bullet Pint come to life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNlrm5j6vc

The Coors Light Silver Bullet Summer kicks off with the release of sleek, new special-edition Silver Bullet Summer packaging. Hitting shelves now, certain packs of Coors Light 12-ounce bottles and cans feature a distinctive, all-silver design with the exception of the iconic Cold-Activated blue mountains.  The Silver Bullet Summer packaging will be available for about 10 weeks in all varieties of 12-ounce cans, as well as 24-loose and 6-pack 12-ounce bottles.

The World’s Most Refreshing Beer can also be enjoyed in the innovative Coors Light Silver Bullet Aluminum Pint (see it in three-dimensional art form here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNlrm5j6vc), which launched nationally earlier this year.  It’s the perfect package for anyone looking for an alternative to glass but wants the benefits of a bottle, whether they’re headed to the beach, concerts in the park or just hanging out with friends at a backyard barbecue. The Silver Bullet Pint’s wide mouth and re-sealable cap provides cold beer on the go and a full 16-ounces of “refreshment as cold as the Rockies.”

As the temperature heats up, The Coors Light Silver Bullet Summer campaign will showcase amazing three-dimensional art displays in cities across the country. At these exhibits, passersby will be able to interact with an oversized Silver Bullet Pint literally “splashing down” in the form of large 3D artwork. This optical illusion comes to life when people take pictures and video posing with the pint. Coors Light is encouraging spectators to capture and share their personal experiences with these visual art works whether it be texts to friends, posts on Facebook, #silverbullet3D on Twitter, and on Coors Light Facebook page. Watch the time-lapse video of this explosive art here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bNlrm5j6vc

The art displays will feature the work of two talented artists, Melanie Stimmell Van Latum and Julie Kirk–Purcell. Melanie is a graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and spent eight years working on the iconic Comedy Central series South Park where she oversaw the transition from infamous paper cutouts to flawless digital animations.

Julie Kirk-Purcell is among the most admired and respected chalk artists of her time. Beginning her street painting career almost 20 years ago, she has traveled the world honing her craft and sharing her elaborate original designs with well-known clients such as The Walt Disney Company & Studios, Universal Studios, The Howard Hughes Corporation, BankMuscat, Bloomburg LLP, Chrysler Corporation, Lexus Corporation and the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.

The Coors Light Facebook page and YouTube channel will also feature exclusive content, including a new augmented reality app, Coors Light Cold FX, which allows people to insert the Silver Bullet Pint into photos and videos captured on smart phones.

“This will be our boldest, coldest summer yet,” said Kedric George, Coors Light director of innovation and activation.  “Everything we’re doing this summer is about reinforcing the message that when you want cold refreshment, you just have to find the blue mountains.”

Have you ever wanted to take your family to any of Denver’s museums, gardens, or zoo, but worried about the cost of tickets? Well, Colorado residents are getting some special treatment thanks to a few generous sponsors. On certain days throughout the year, a few specific venues are offering free admission! A few of my favorites are the museums and art displays.

The Denver Art Museum always has new exhibitions coming through. In May alone they have eleven new exhibits coming to the museum. The displays will include everything from a variety of recycled products to textiles to a combination of traditional craft and digital technology. The museum also has a number of collections that are there year round.  It has one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of world art between Chicago and the West Coast.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science has a similar set up as the art museum in that it has a rotation of exhibits every couple of months. It also has permanent displays such as wildlife, Egyptian mummies, gems and minerals, and space odyssey.   It also has a great planetarium that offers showings on a 3D IMAX.

If you need somewhere that’s a little more kid friendly try out the Children’s Museum of Denver. It’s filled with tons of interactive activities that can keep your kids busy and entertained. They can paint, launch rockets, explore kinetics, or play with big soapy bubbles. If the museum is a hit with your kiddos, you could even sign them for a camp!

If you’re more interested in galleries than museums, perhaps you’d like to check out Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. On the first Friday of every month the Art District opens its doors to the public for free showings!

Take advantage of these free days and experience some culture and great entertainment in Denver. Check the dates and mark your calendars!

Wildlife Art in Black and White

Needing a wildlife encounter? Visit the Boulder Public Library to enjoy J. B. Sullivan’s exquisite drawings of wildlife and animals of all kinds.  A Colorado native, Sullivan enjoys drawing birds, elk, coyotes, moose, bears and other animals he discovers in our local environment.

Each drawing requires hundreds of hours to complete the contrast, shading, and immense detail. Working with just pencils, he creates life like drawings that reflect each animal’s unique characteristics. Occasionally he adds a touch of color by adding a highlight in colored pencil.

Growing up on a ranch in Meeker, Colorado, Sullivan learned to appreciate wildlife when he worked outdoors. Today, he is an accomplished artist living in Lafayette, Colorado who shows his work in local venues, at summer art festivals, and on his web site, www.jsullivanart.com.

The current exhibit is sponsored by Boulder Arts Resource and located in the main Boulder Library at 1001 Arapahoe Avenue in downtown Boulder, March 6 – April 30.

1. It’s Time to Break Out of Your Four Walls. An individual or brick-and-mortar establishment has boundaries. However, with the vast reach of the Internet, there are endless opportunities to sell your art to consumers across the globe. Millions of consumers are embracing online art research and consumerism. Whether you use your own website or a site like www.masterpieceonline.com to promote your artwork, it’s time to get in the game!2. Recession isn’t a Time to Waste Time. Inventory tracking alone can be confusing, tedious and time consuming. Allowing software to manage your inventory process will give you back time and sanity to channel into other parts of your business.“Masterpiece enables me to be in all of my galleries every day. I can tell what sold and what is in inventory, out on approval, etc. at the touch of a button,” said Zelma Legendre, owner of Thornwood Gallery (two in Houston and one in Dallas). “With the Masterpiece server, all of my galleries are connected. If we get an e-mail inquiry we can answer it immediately without calling the other galleries. This makes us more efficient with our time and easier for our customers to get answers quickly.”3. It’s Time to Eliminate Operator Error. Humans are prone to error. Have you ever forgotten to log a sale? Do you have too many artists to manage consignments effectively? Do you use archaic systems for ringing in sales that result in more work on the back end? Technology is not as intimidating as many people seem to think. Instead, it can be helpful, and will simplify tasks that often lead to mistakes.4. You Deserve a Business Team. Money is tight; margins are slim. Not many galleries have business managers, marketing teams, web developers and accountants. Paying those salaries would sink most small businesses. But the solution is simple – and affordable.Masterpiece provides business support at the click of a mouse. With Masterpiece Solutions, websites can be customized to display and sell your artwork to online shoppers. When you run into a problem, Masterpiece’s technical support team will walk you through the solution. “Our clients constantly tell us that we have the best website and we love the technical support! When we need them, they are there,” added Zelma.5. Informed Decisions = Better Decisions. With art to sell and a business to run, there are “must haves” and “nice to haves.” Reporting often falls in the latter category. However, the intelligence that business reports provide can be invaluable. Tracking trends such as customer buying history, seasonal sales and profit and loss can drastically impact your business decisions. In fact, most insurance companies want client businesses to have a system for inventory. With Masterpiece, the system is in place and will help to lower your costs in the long run.“Through Masterpiece Solutions, you can have an all-in-one marketing and business team that can increase your business potential exponentially,” said Kevin Warr, CEO of Masterpiece Solutions (http://www.masterpiecesolutions.com). “From an effective website that engages your consumers to an effective inventory management system to point-of-sale and reporting capabilities, financially, there is no way to go wrong.”Utilized by more than 800 independent retailers worldwide, Masterpiece Manager was designed for gallery owners by gallery owners to increase the operating efficiency and simplify processes to give gallery owners and artists the freedom to focus on the art and not the paperwork. For nearly 15 years, Masterpiece Manager has integrated point of sale software with inventory and customer relationship management. Independent artists also find tremendous value in their artist-specific software: visit http://www.masterpiecemanager.com/artistfnb.html .To learn more about Masterpiece Solution’s products and services, visit www.masterpiecesolutions.com or call 303.225.0330 today.
