The Boulder Emergency Squad has elected Andrew M. Amalfitano as the new President and Chief for a two-year term. Boulder Emergency provides volunteer search and rescue services for the past 47 years within and around Boulder County. Early in his volunteer rescue career, Amalfitano served in the same role from 1985-1995.

(Boulder, Colorado). September 12, 2011 -- The Boulder Emergency Squad-(B.E.S.) has been providing high quality, professional volunteer rescue services to Boulder County for over 46 years.  Every two years, the members of the organization elect a President to lead them.  The President also serves as the Chief of the Squad and works with the member-elected Board of Directors to provide executive leadership for the team.

This year, the members have elected Andrew (Andy) M. Amalfitano as their new President/Chief with past Chief Andrew Moschetti taking on the role of Deputy Chief Operations Planning. Chief Amalfitano brings a wealth of executive leadership to the team. Amalfitano also has extensive experience as a participating member on a number of search and rescue, fire department, and ambulance agencies.

Joe Pelle, Sheriff Boulder County, was thrilled to learn of Andy returning to the helm at B.E.S. "BES has always been counted on to provided a well-trained group of dedicated, volunteer rescuers who deliver a number of emergency services and I know that Andy will bring his broad leadership experience in guiding the next evolution of these services", said Pelle.

Amalfitano served in leadership roles for high-tech firms and is currently, the Vice President of Product Development and Global Operations at iCarnegie, a division of Carnegie Mellon University, where he is responsible for the strategic direction of program sourcing and development and delivery of iCarnegie’s learning portfolio. Amalfitano earned a Master of Science degree in Business Continuity Management from Norwich University and a Masters degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Fairfield University. Amalfitano has been a member of BES for 31 years and has seen the group evolve with the changing times in emergency services.

Amalfitano says he is excited about the new challenge and appreciates the accomplishments of outgoing president Andrew Moschetti. "I want to thank Chief Moschetti for continuing the proud tradition of BES in the County. The squad has grown under his leadership and he will remain as a valuable contributing member of our team.  BES and volunteerism has always been part of who I am.  I have grown personally and professionally as a result of my participation in the organization and I am humbled and honored that the membership has elected me to lead them, said Amalfitano."

Chief Amalfitano will be assuming leadership of the squad on September 26th and will begin meeting with Fire Departments, Rescue Groups and Police Departments to personally introduce himself in the coming months.

The tragic wildland fire that ripped through Fourmile Canyon this week has taken peoples' homes and possessions. Some of those affected are the very firefighters who protected the community and saved many structures, but sadly lost their homes. Boulder Emergency Squad provided temporary housing for a few of those firefighters affected and continues to support the community relief effort with their volunteer rescuers.

(Boulder, Colorado). September 12, 2010 -- Trained emergency rescuers from Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. responded this past Monday in the opening moments of the Fourmile Canyon Fire to assist with evacuations, road closures, and manage apparatus staging for the incoming fire departments. After the first 30 hours, it became evident that the fire was taking a toll on fellow emergency responders who live in the fire area as well as other citizens. B.E.S. helped immediately by housing displaced firefighters and continues to provide whatever help is necessary to support the recovery effort.

Beyond emergency rescue, B.E.S. volunteers assisted with community relief efforts. Mike Chard, Manager for the Boulder [City and County] Office of Emergency Management was keen on having B.E.S. on board to manage community relief and support activities. "B.E.S. was instrumental in getting the infrastructure in place that was essential at a time when we needed it most", said Chard. "Without B.E.S. and their organizational skills, our advanced community support system would have been delayed."

On Friday the team created and set up the donation reception centers and today the team setup the traffic control pattern to allow evacuees to safely and efficiently obtain the credentials necessary to begin returning to their homes. B.E.S. members were also involved in spearheading efforts to raise money for firefighters who lost their homes and fire departments who lost stations.

In addition, B.E.S. received requests for JointFire to provide practice wildland shelters to help train utility workers returning to the burn zone for repairs. "We are here for the community whether that be for performing emergency rescue or for critical community support activities as we did this weekend", said Chief Andrew Moschetti - "Those affected are people many of us know personally and departments that we train and work with, so this hit us hard. I could not be more proud of the over 30 members we had that unselfishly stepped up to help our community in need."

Our thoughts go out to our neighbors who suffered loss this week.

High, fast water is a welcome treat for kayak competitors, but can cause alarm for the safety of citizens watching near the banks of a dangerous creek. A combined team from the Boulder Emergency Squad and Longmont Emergency Unit provided certified swift water rescuers to standby in case someone fell in the creek while watching the national kayak competition in Lyons Colorado.

(Boulder, Colorado). June 13, 2010 -- Expertly trained volunteers from Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. and Longmont Emergency Unit-L.E.U. combined forces this weekend to provide a team of Swift Water rescuers in Lyons Colorado where the 8th Annual Outdoor Games were being held. The games include many fun outdoor sports and the kayaking competition typically attracts great interest. Often with that interest comes crowds standing at the water's edge to catch the exciting in-water kayak action.

Kevin Parker, White Water event coordinator for the games, said "We appreciate the presence of B.E.S. and L.E.U. to ensure a safe and fun event for all participants and spectators". Parker emphasized that there is a lot of peace of mind that the trained
rescuers are on scene.

With this year's early high water run-off, kayakers enjoyed tremendous 'holes', a term used to describe a hydraulic of fast churning water where competition takes place. These expert kayakers of all ages are actually well trained and often able to self-rescue should they encounter any danger. Not so for spectators who line the creek with their kids and pets in tow. That's where the trained volunteer specialists from B.E.S. and L.E.U. bring great value.

Jayme Margolin, B.E.S. water rescuer prepares for a
long day of rescue standby at the kayak competition.

B.E.S. Operations Captain Shea Gilliam said "The water is overflowing most Boulder County creek banks and is extremely fast, strong and dangerous to be near" The B.E.S. and L.E.U. team donned full wetsuits, vests, helmets and were equipped with water rescue boards, throw lines and their expertise.

"During this time of year with high water runoff and increased outdoor recreational activities we are all spread pretty thin. It's good to know we can each
call a rescue team we trust to respond appropriately." says Eric Johnson, L.E.U.
Water Group team leader.

During the course of the 3-day event, rope rescue assists were performed by the water rescue team and in each case it was to assist a kayak competitor out of danger.

Wolf Rescued from Pipe

Teamwork credited with wolf rescue. On the side of a steep slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, rescuers worked to successfully free a wolf with its head trapped in a heavy steep pipe. Members of the Boulder Emergency Squad, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder County Parks and Open Space, and Boulder County Sheriff's Department Animal Control responded and rescued the wolf with the help of a local veterinarian. (Boulder, Colorado). January 27, 2010 -- Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. along with other agencies, rescued a wolf which had gotten its head stuck in a steel pipe. With medical care provided by a veterinarian, the pipe was carefully cut from around the animals head. The several hour ordeal left the wolf "...in fine condition with only some minor cuts & scrapes", according to Veterinarian Dr. Christopher Blum, VMD of Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic in Golden, Colorado. While playing, the wolf-hybrid had gotten her head stuck in a 6 inch diameter, half-inch thick, eight foot long steel pipe and had evidently been unseen for a few hours. Coal Creek Fire cut the pipe to about one foot long which made the wolf and pipe portable. But, the head was still stuck and the animal was obviously stressed. The problem was metal welded inside the pipe was trapping the wolf's head. "From the moment the wolf was brought to the clinic until it was freed, all of us melded together into a cohesive team, that made the difference", said Blum. The animal control officer agrees. "Without the assistance of Deputy Bryarly, Officer Spensieri, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder Emergency Squad and Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic, this wolf would have died, no question," said Brandy J. Perkins, Animal Control Officer at Boulder County. The scene was on the side of a steep hill on property where a local homeowner raises wolf-hybrids. With the need for sedation. dark approaching and far from an ideal location, the wolf was transported 20 miles to a clinic, its head still stuck in the very heavy chunk of pipe.

After a quick check by the doctor, it was apparent that the wolf was dehydrated and stressed. IVs were started and vital signs monitored as the team set up outside in the parking lot with the BES emergency lighting. The 'patient' was monitored as the rescuers used a side grinder to slowly cut away enough of the metal to get the head out. "The 'operation' was a success", said Chief Andrew Moschetti after the wolf was cleared from the metal pipe. "I am so thankful to everyone who assisted in this rescue. It is so nice to know that BES is always there when we ask for them. They [B.E.S.] provide the equipment and support we need without ever questioning it's for an "animal". These [rescuers] are great and deserve to be recognized for all the good they do!" said Perkins. * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * About Boulder Emergency Squad: B.E.S. is an all volunteer, non-profit 501c.3 technical rescue team serving the County of Boulder, Colorado. Boulder County Rescue Team Elects Youngest Chief/President in Agency History

Boulder Emergency Squad, Inc, a non-profit 501c.3 volunteer agency elected Andrew J.C. Moschetti to the position of Corporate President and the role of Chief of Operations at their bi-annual elections held this week. Moschetti-26, a five year veteran of the agency, replaces retiring Chief Dan J. Eamon who led the agency for the past four years.

(Boulder, Colorado). September 18, 2009 -- Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. announced today the election of Andrew J.C. Moschetti as its newest President and Chief. The 45-year all volunteer rescue team elected Moschetti as its youngest to ever hold that position.

As the person responsible for coordinating search and rescue, Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle says he relies heavily on the rescue team for a number of critical emergency services. "Along with several other key volunteer agencies, I rely on the B.E.S. volunteers to help our County and my department perform essential rescue functions", said Pelle.

Stepping down as President and Chief is Daniel J. Eamon, who during his four-year tenure championed new services vital to the county response posture including an equipped and trained wildland fire crew, county-wide water rescue protocols, and a standardized emergency training program known as JointFire

Moschetti recently held the position of Division Chief responsible for emergency services response, training certifications, and operational readiness. "I'm proud to usher in the next era of professional technical rescue services as Chief", said Moschetti, and "Dan [Eamon] has been an extremely valuable mentor to me".

With Boulder Emergency Squad since 2005, Moschetti maintains certifications as an EMT, public safety diver, swift-water rescue technician, wildland firefighter, and extrication technician. He holds degrees from the University of Colorado in Molecular-Cellular-Developmental Biology, Japanese Language and Literature, and Architecture.

Boulder Emergency Squad maintains high proficiency levels necessary to deliver services. "The training provided by B.E.S. is some of the most vigorous in the county since they adhere to NFPA [National Fire Protection Agency] standards", said Bret Gibson, Chief of Four Mile Fire Protection District. According to Moschetti, there are several important training initiatives in the coming months.
