Innovation for the Modern Home

Competing for the Cup

This year the Floral Association of the Rockies, a statewide organization of florists within Colorado, will be holding their Rocky Mountain Cup contest at the Denver Home Show. This contest will crown the "Designer of the Year" in Colorado. The contestants will be given the same materials, three categories and a set time to design within. They will design three pieces on site from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and judging will immediately follow. Then Premier Competition will take place at 3 p.m. These five finalists will only have one hour to design their beautiful creations. From novice to experienced designer, all entrants have a chance to win a monetary prize, the Rocky Mountain Cup, and of course, bragging rights.

Look What’s Cooking at the Show

The Denver Home Show Kitchen Stage will be holding fun demonstrations and contests throughout the weekend. Numerous presentations will be given throughout all three days of the show.

Ryan and Amy Green are parents to four boys between the ages of 2 and 7. In January 2010, they received some bad news. One-year-old Joel had cancer.

Joel had an Atypical Teratoid/ Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT) that was successfully removed. After the surgery he was scheduled to undergo 54 weeks of treatment including chemotherapy and radiation. He never finished treatment because 10 months later he had a tumor recurrence.

Joel Evan Green was declared terminal and the Greens were referred to Hospice and they were advised to sign a do not resuscitate form. However, Joel did not die. This doesn’t mean the last few years haven’t been difficult; Joel has had six tumor recurrences, but he isn’t dead.

A year ago, over lunch, Ryan and Amy first discussed the idea of writing a book.

“We were discussing that he’s not dead yet,” recalls Ryan Green. “And then realized it was an interesting idea because we’re all not dead yet. That’s where the seed for the book first came from.”

While the name may seem startling, the concept of death is very real to the Green family. They’ve seen doctors shocked and thrilled when Joel does better than expected, but they know there are no guarantees. They have found peace in the middle of all the ups and downs.

“These past three years could have been overshadowed by death, but instead they’ve been marked by joy and love.” said Green.

The fact that Joel is alive is something the Green’s want to shout out to the world.

“This book is about choosing to love somebody you know you can lose,” said Green. “We wanted to talk about this while we were still involved in it, not afterward, because I think you find out who you are and what you believe right in the middle of a trial.”

The Green’s book, “He’s Not Dead Yet” faces these painful concepts head on. It is written from the perspective of an older brother, and walks through the story from the dire prognosis of terminal cancer to the fact that, a few years later, this little boy isn’t dead yet. He keeps living, blowing out birthday candles, riding his trike and opening Christmas presents.

While “He’s Not Dead Yet” looks like a children’s book, it will be up to individual parents to decide whether or not it is appropriate for their child. The Greens are acutely aware that everyone is battling something, whether it’s childhood cancer or some other disease or difficult life issue.

The book is about how the Greens have chosen to face their situation, and they hope it will be a comfort to others struggling with their own difficult life journey.

You can read about the Green’s journey at www.joelevangreen.com. “He’s Not Dead Yet” is available at www.hesnotdeadyet.com. For more information about the content of this press release please email RyanGreen8@gmail.com or call 303-249-8245.

February 19, 2013. Back in Boulder

Happy to say I am living back in Boulder (Gunbarrel) again after living in Estes Park for almost 15 years.  I first came to Boulder in 1961 to attend CU and now am teaching online courses for Continuing Education at CU.  While living in Estes I was evacuated for a fire last summer and then was inundated with smoke from the Fern Lake fire most of the fall.  Too much stress and too much to lose, so I moved.  Have been enjoying Twin Lakes trails, Walden Ponds/Sawmill Ponds, and Niwot trails.  Recently saw nesting owls on Twin Lakes trail and met Bodo Blaczak who told me about this website.  Check out his photos of owls, eagles, horses, and other sites around town.  Check out my black bear photos from Estes.

The American Cancer Society is getting big under the big top with their Kick Off celebration for the 2013 Relay For Life of East Boulder held March 9, 2 p.m. at Louisville United Methodist Church. In 2012, the Relay For Life of East Boulder raised more than $95,000 for the American Cancer Society. With the theme “Under The Big Top”, Relay For Life of East Boulder will be Dreaming Bigger, Hoping Bigger and Relaying Bigger for 2013!  The 2013 East Boulder Relay will begin on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Monarch High School through 7 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Relay For Life began with one man in Tacoma, Washington in 1985 and is now a worldwide movement to end cancer, with 5100 events across America that raised more than $400 million dollars in 2012. These funds help the American Cancer Society achieve their mission of eliminating cancer as a major health concern.

In honor of those who battle cancer 24 hours a day, team members typically take turns walking the track throughout the night. For those not walking, there is constant action to keep everyone busy. From entertainment, food and games to touching ceremonies and stories of inspiration, there is something for everyone at Relay For Life of East Boulder.

At each event, we celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer through our Survivor's Lap and survivor recognition. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight. We also remember loved ones lost to the disease, and honor those who have survived and are currently battling the disease with our Luminaria Ceremony. At Relay, people who have walked alongside those battling cancer can grieve and find healing. Finally, we fight back against cancer because we want to put an end to the disease. Relay helps individuals make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.

Are you the Next J.K. Rowling?

Looking for the next J.K. Rowling

Broomfield, Colorado—On March 2, 2013 Three power-house literary agents will team together to help aspiring children’s book novelists discover how to break into publishing.  Those who register for the event will enjoy a rare opportunity to move beyond the veil of the internet and meet three agents: Sara Megibow from Nelson Literary, Kate Schafer Testerman of KT Literary, and Terrie Wolfe of AKA Literary.

J.K. Rowling, the popular author of the Harry Potter series, was rejected twelve times before she found her publisher.  Furthermore most publishers won’t engage with authors who don’t have an agent representing them. The Rocky Mountain chapter of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) has arranged for the three agents to offer a workshop at the Broomfield Public Library.  Aspiring children’s book novelists will learn the in’s and out’s of publishing including how to pitch their project. This is a quick way to move past the slush pile. After learning the art of the pitch, each writer will be afforded the valuable chance to pitch directly to an agent, and then receive immediate feedback on what works and what doesn’t.  Furthermore, the agent panel will read the first page of each participant’s manuscript in a session called “First Pages” and again participants will receive immediate feedback. This is an incredible opportunity to meet executives in the industry, and it’s a valuable chance to ask questions and learn.

The event takes place on Saturday March 2nd from 9:30am-4:30pm at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library located at 3 Community Park Road in Broomfield, Colorado. Space is very limited and pre-registration is required (registration deadline is February 25, 2013).  The cost is $79 for SCBWI members and $100 for non-members.

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED:  This event is geared toward Middle Grade and YA Novelist.  To register please visit http://tinyurl.com/ak8j5b2 or contact the registrar, Carrie Seidel, at whispurr_s@hotmail.com.  To learn more about the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, please visit www.scbwi.org more on Agent day at http://www.scbwi.org/Resources/Documents/2013%20AGENT%20DAY.pdf

Saratoga - "The Turning Point"

The 2012-2013 CAR National Theme is "Saratoga - The Turning Point."  31040782499?profile=original

Quoted from the National Program Packet - "The Battle of Saratoga was actually comprised of two battles, taking place 18 days apart in the fall of 1777. But what set the scene for these clashes? Imagine yourself in the colonies in the early days of 1777. The joy and excitement of the Declaration had passed and all you had seen and heard of were many British victories and few American ones. It did not matter what part of the colonies you lived in, the British victory could be sensed. General John Burgoyne had set out from Canada to cut off New England from the rest of the colonies and force it into submission. It seemed the Revolution was doomed to fail, but then there was a spark. General John Stark led the Americans to a decisive victory at Bennington, which caused morale to soar and a surge of men joined the fight.

This was troubling news for General Burgoyne. His army was reduced by approximately 1,000 men from the Battle of Bennington, and he lost support of almost all of the Native Americans in the region. Burgoyne pushed his army forward to what would be the beginning of the Battle of Saratoga. Burgoyne and his men, nearly 6,000 strong, would win the first engagement and sustained heavy casualties. On October 7, 1777 Burgoyne started what would be his last campaign. During this battle, the Americans, led by Benedict Arnold overwhelmed the British and forced them to retreat under the cover of darkness. Ten days later the American army, led by General Horatio Gates, surrounded the remnants of Burgoyne’s army and forced his surrender.

The goal for the year is for every CAR member and senior to recognize the importance of the Battle of
Saratoga and why it is The Turning Point in our fortunes as a nation. Our society is based on education and patriotism. We need to teach our members the importance of these events, in order that they may comprehend the struggles and sacrifices of our forefathers to become a free and independent people. Let us always remember our past and demonstrate our love of country to future generations. It is through this love of country and the education of our members that all will come to understand the significance of this year’s National Project and Theme – Saratoga: The Turning Point.

The National Project is to raise funds for the Sword Surrender Site Project at Saratoga National Park. This project will include a basrelief sculpture, memorial, walk-ways, and interpretive signage. The basis of this project is the famous painting, The Surrender of General  Burgoyne, by John Trumbull. Major Henry Dearborn would later reflect that Saratoga was “one of the Greatest battles that Ever was fought in America.” Saratoga was the turning point of the American Revolution.  Saratoga was the turning point which resulted in our alliances with France and Spain. Saratoga was the turning point, not only for the colonists, but also for the world. Without this victory, there is no success in our Revolution, there is no French or Spanish Alliance, and there is no United States of America."

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, members of the William Smith Livingston Society gathered at Rocky Mountain National Park where Ms. Diane Harpold presented a very educational program.  The purpose of the ESA is to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.  It is administered by the Interior Department’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS, Secretary Ken Salazar of Colorado) and the Commerce Department’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).  Under the ESA, species may be listed as either endangered or threatened.  “Endangered” means a species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range.  “Threatened” means a species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.  As of September 2012, there are approximately 1,990 total31040781282?profile=original species listed under the ESA.  The most interesting part of the program was learning about the specific species affected here in Colorado.  For example, the Greenback Cutthroat Trout was presumed to be extinct in 1937.  Numerous wild greenback cutthroat populations were discovered starting in the late 1950s.  Only five naturally occurring pure populations are known to have survived to recent times.  Population has increased in recent decades due to successful reintroduction efforts.  21 out of 55 populations were considered to be stable and more than half of these were within Rocky Mountain National Park.  The greenback was named Colorado’s state fish in 1994.  Other Colorado species listed under the ESA include the Canada Lynx which was reintroduced in 2000 and the Boreal Toad.  For a complete list of Colorado’s species of concern, please visit:

Examples of two species that have made great comebacks are the Bald Eagle and Elk.  Eagle populations continue to increase and the breeding population has doubled every 6-7 years since the late 1970s.  Elk were hunted extensively in the Estes Valley and much of the meat was sent to market in Denver.  By 1890 very few remained.  In 1913 and 1914, 49 elk from Yellowstone were transplanted into the area what was to become Rocky Mountain Nation Park.  Reducing predators such as the grizzly bear and gray wolf hastened the elk’s recovery.    Recently, over-population has become a concern.  The three last years, culling was necessary to thin the herd.  131 elk were removed.  The goal is to maintain the population of 600 to 800 elk.
