Revisionism again, or blatant treason

I must apologize to all of the extensive make-believe audience I write to periodically. It seems I took a Rip Van Winkle nap and woke up in a different country. When the valley pollen took over my senses, I was in a country that was Christian. We had chaplains of Christian churches at many public events and prisons. We had a president that shared his opinion on faith, who professed his own faith in God. The reality of his faith was the real question, but nevertheless, we as a nation considered it almost heresy not to consider ourselves a Christian nation. The definition was likely in name only, and often in comparison to other countries, but still. It was stated as fact. We were politically and historically a Christian nation. That is until the president so clearly elected only a few months ago, tells the public, while speaking directly to the president of Turkey, that we do not call ourselves a Christian nation.Mr. President, with due respect, I need to ask when Christianity became a minority? Is it possible then that all of the badmouthing said by the naysayers before the election were right? Whose side are you on? Mr. President, if we, the two of us, as men, were on speaking terms, I would ask for an afternoon at a good coffee shop where we could sort this out.My concern is that the most of the strongest nations in the world are those whose government aligns itself tightly with a specific religion. We have grown so dispassionate about our past, we welcome anything, wrapping our reasoning in some misunderstood separation clause. I would challenge historians to consider: Did the founding fathers want the government to be free from religion, or religion free from government? There is a difference, you know.So please wish that I wake up and discover this is a bad dream. Until then...

PERISH, THE THOUGHT, A CLASSICAL CONCERT PREMIERE BY DAVID HARRIS

A Memorial Day weekend concert interpreting the meaning of death for life.

Lafayette, Colo.— “And as to you Death, it is idle to try to alarm me,” Walt Whitman exclaimed and inspired others to contemplate what death really means in regard to life. David Harris, Composer, has been pondering this question as of late diving deep into the worlds of poetry, prose, and art to formulate his own thoughts and feelings on this subject. The result is the world premiere of his latest musical compositions in a Memorial Day weekend concert entitled Perish, The Thought. The concert will premiere the cantata The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, the choral cycle The Frail Stag and his first String Quartet.

On Friday, May 22nd at First Congregational Church of Boulder (1128 Pine Street, Boulder, CO), 7:30 pm and Saturday, May 23rd at Christ Church Episcopal Denver (2950 South University Avenue, Denver, CO). 7:30 pm, David Harris focuses on mortality and ways that people have attempted to reconcile life’s brevity. “I have collected ideas posited by poets, artists and religious treatises. The music acts as a vehicle for the concepts found in these documents, and through it, I intermingle my own reflections. Though a heavy topic, the outcome is one of hope, and the music contains energy and vibrancy,” says Harris.

Both The Frail Stag and The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew found their inspiration in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Upper West Side annex, The Cloisters. The cantata began in the chant “Apostolo Beato” found in The Florence Laurdario (book of chants) that The Cloisters has on display.

The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew
explores the ubiquitous complexities surrounding death by juxtaposing texts from modern poets and ancient religious documents. Particularly, the texts wrestle with the nobility that humans often assign to death and the manner of one's dying. They reflect on what meaning these matters can ascribe to life, and they ponder the definition of life, whether one can be living and yet dead (a popular secular and religious sentiment). The music engages the audience through lyrical melody with rhythmic and harmonic layering. It is immediately accessible, but challenges the listener beyond the immediate, opening aural opportunities for novice and expert alike.

The Frail Stag was inspired by a 16th-century French tapestry bearing the allegory of a stag hunt, one that depicts human mortality. In the tapestry, Old Age hunts the stag (mankind) with the help of her hounds whose names are grief, anxiety, fear, cold, heat and toil.

The Frail Stag for chorus is in three movements. The first bears the tapestry's text that describes the activity in the foreground image that represents the end of life. The second movement is from the poem “Pense Morir” by Pablo Neruda and reflects adulthood’s principle challenge, the quest for meaning and love. “And a little child will lead them” from the Hebrew prophet Isaiah finishes the set. Harris explains,“Instead of a focus on loathing, the choral cycle, in contrast to the tapestry, suggests that life springs from death, and that perspective offers relief from the pain of aging.”

String Quartet, David Harris' first string quartet, takes its departure from the text printed on “The Hunt of the Frail Stag” tapestry, with each of the movements named for one of the dogs who attack the stag. By extension, the music stirs thoughts of mortality and time. Moments of untroubled beauty mingle with fast-paced textural conflict.

Perish, The Thought features the Rocky Mountain Chamber Singers, a string quartet of the Boulder Philharmonic (Gyongver Petheo, Annamaria Karacson, Matthew Dane and Marcelo Sanches), in addition to Elizabeth Caswell Dyer, soprano, Marta Burton, mezzo, Ryan Connell on organ and David Harris conducting.

Marta Burton, mezzo-soprano for Perish, The Thought, describes why she is delighted to be performing another David Harris composition, “David Harris’ settings are ravishing in their emotional impact--the complexities of harmony and rhythm serve the poetry, ultimately revealing the depth of the language through his sensitive and fearless renderings. He writes beautifully for the voice, allowing the singers to bring their own color and vitality to the work. It is an absolute joy to sing and hear his music.”

The launch of a new evening intensive outpatient program this month distinguishes Denver-based Eating Recovery Center (http://www.eatingrecoveryinfo.com) as the only facility in the Rocky Mountain region to provide a full spectrum of recovery options for adults with anorexia or bulimia. The new program serves two populations simultaneously, as it bridges the transition to everyday life for patients stepping down from more intensive treatment, while also building structure into the lives of individuals seeking treatment that allows them to continue working or attending school.“We want to create a pathway to a healthy lifestyle that enables lasting behavioral change, reduces the chances of relapse and sustains long-term recovery in our patients,” explains Emmett R. Bishop, MD, director of outpatient services and co-founder of the Eating Recovery Center (http://www.eatingrecoveryinfo.com) . “This added service is one piece of our vision to provide comprehensive care to patients.”Launched by Eating Recovery Center in March, the program serves as a first step to recovery or a transition from a higher level of care. The intensive outpatient program focuses on teaching the skills necessary for patients to remain healthy after leaving treatment. In an eight-week cycle, patients attend four-hour sessions that include dinner on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Individual, group and family activities are centered around building mindfulness, values awareness and connection with self and others, enabling patients to integrate recovery behaviors into their post-treatment lives. Classes and therapy sessions focus on body image, nutrition and other key recovery skills. The evening intensive outpatient program is open to adults 17 and older, whether they have been in treatment at another center or are seeking treatment for the first time. The program curriculum rotates in an eight-week cycle and new patients can join at any time.“Eating disorders are complex conditions and every person’s experience with the disease is different,” explains Bishop. “The evening intensive outpatient program offers us an additional resource to tailor treatment to the unique needs of each patient and promote their successful recovery.”Founded by nationally-recognized eating disorder experts, Drs. Kenneth Weiner and Emmett R. Bishop (https://www.eatingrecoveryinfo.com) the Eating Recovery Center is one of the only treatment facilities offering a full spectrum of recovery options for adults, including intensive inpatient and residential care, partial hospitalization and outpatient programming.Unlike the majority of other facilities devoted to the treatment of eating disorders, the Eating Recovery Center is equipped to care for the most severe eating disorders through the provision of 24/7 nursing care under the supervision of highly experienced psychiatrists and internists who use a modernized approach to care. The Center combines medical management and psychiatric evaluation with therapeutic interventions, including expressive arts therapy, yoga and exercise therapy, personalized dietary counseling, culinary lessons and massage therapy. For more information, please call 877.825.8584 or visit www.EatingRecoveryInfo.com. Eating Recovery Center is located at 1830 Franklin Street, Suite 500, Denver, Colorado 80218.

Hello folks,It's been almost long enough since my last posting that I might have forgotten how to get here. Feeling lucky, I gave it a shot.A lot has happened since my last post. Major change is the demise of my Xeriscape/Landscape contracting company. A unpleasant event I will just have to live through, I suppose.Getting back up on the horse that bit me, my ailing landscape company that died in 4th quarter of '08, has it's own set of problems. With my company ( Dove Gardens LLC ) gone, I must find ways to get back into working again.I love working with the soils, bringing garden beds back to life, constructing new, accessible garden beds, clean-up of established beds, maintenance of conventional or alternative turf grasses, installation of shrubs, perennials, trees, and/or turf and ornamental grasses.Opportunities have risen for me to take on a "JOB" that pays a steady salary, commute to larger cities or even move to a more urban environment where the "JOB" hunting is heavy on the competitive spirit. That would be a bit easier on my wife if we moved to a more urban setting to start our life together all over but I would miss seeing Dinosaur Mountain with a cloud hat, the Red Garden Wall dusted by a fresh spring snow, the blooming wildflowers of the open spaces in mid June. With the economy of Boulder in roller coaster mode, it's not a great time to start over here, but the economy in other regions is still dicey. Boulder has been my home for too long to move to an unfamiliar new start for both my wife and I in our middle age. Conventional wisdom advises us to move to one of the coasts and eek out a living there, but I'm not anywhere near to being conventional. Probably my downfall, but for every down there is an up.We, that is my wife, Penny, and our cats, will find a new house or apartment, either for sale( really cheap ) or rent or for partial trade, and I will start a new company to serve the landscaping and gardening needs of Boulder County's residential and income property owners again. We will make some changes due to the learning experience of having a small company fail down all around our ears. We will offer some service work for trade of goods or services. We may even be able to run a crew of helpers. Focus will be on providing high quality services and products at fair and reasonable prices. With the new changes that I'm looking forward to will be a new website, new e-mail account, new methods of payment for our work. Our new company, tentatively named PHATDOVE ENTERPRISES, will be accepting cash, local bank drafts, or e-Check and credit cards through our PayPal.com account. Let us know if we can help your landscape or garden beds right now.Contact Phone # 303 499 0921Mobile # ( for now ) 303 803 6738e-Mail fatdove52@gmail.comMuch health and happiness to you and yours.L. BIG GREEN LIES EXPOSED

Finally, help arrives to separate “green” myth from fact with the help of Seventh Generation and the Fine Living Network. On April 22 - earth day 2009 - join environmental activist, advocate and Seventh Generation President Jeffrey Hollender as he separates myth from reality when it comes to the conventional wisdom of green living. “Big Green Lies” airs at 9PM ET/PT, on Fine Living Network. While many people have adopted small, easy habits to make their lives a little more environmentally friendly, some of those activities may be steeped in eco-fiction instead of fact. For example, people are trading in their gas guzzlers for hybrids. But, it may make sense to hit the used car lot instead when considering the environmental impact of producing a new car. Or, people might look at conventional fuel-efficient cars that actual achieve greater gas mileage than its hybrid brethren. And what about the eco-issues surrounding organic food? Certainly organic foods that are grown and produced using sustainable, regenerative farming methods are good for the planet, but only if they’re not trucked, shipped or flown around the world before arriving at their final destination. From the corridors of power to the halls of your home, follow the crew of BIG GREEN LIES as they perform mad science, track down the partisan experts, expert partisans, average citizens, rabid researchers, and other oracles who think they’ve got the ecological answers you’re seeking. Tune in as host and Seventh Generation CEO Jeffrey Hollender dispatches his team of off-kilter operatives to locations around an overheated globe to separate ecological facts from fiction, addressing the issues that no one’s had the chutzpah to take on until now. Take a sneak peak at some of our attitudes to a few myths (yes, yours and mine!) - and trailer at www.biggreenlies.com“As the name implies, Big Green Lies aims to reveal the falsehoods behind prevalent green myths and settle long-standing debates,” said Jeffrey Hollender. “Our team tackles a few of those questions in our first episode”:• Is the planet really having a cow over our appetite for beef?• Would the world be better off if some of us didn’t drive a Prius?• Should a smog alert be issued for our living room?• Paper or plastic-which really has sustainability in the bag?• Are disposable diapers as guilty of environmental sins as everyone thinks? There are many, many Big Green Lies out there that need our attention.” Take a sneak peak at http://www.biggreenlies.com and find out if your attitudes, ideas and knowledge match those of our own men and women on the street!

Martinez International Corp., a leading government contractor in the international market, today announced its participation in a project that helps the United States Mission in Geneva expand its legacy as the U.S. State Department’s greenest diplomatic building.Martinez International led construction and installation of an innovative chiller system based on magnetic levitation technology that promises to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions at the U.S. Mission. The system will be brought on line on, Earth Day 2009 and will enhance several existing green features at the U.S. Mission, including a major solar electric system, building-wide installation of high efficiency lighting and installation of a low emission, high efficiency, heating boiler.“We are thrilled to have helped make a lasting, measurable and positive influence on the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Geneva, by improving its energy conservation and environmental performance,” said Vern Martinez Founder and CEO of Martinez International. “This project is a showcase of American innovation and leadership in energy conservation and environmental sustainability, and we are proud to be part of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) team that made this happen.”Martinez International has worked extensively with OBO, leading design, construction, renovation and maintenance of State Department facilities in more than 32 countries. The company has worked with OBO for more than a decade and has long-standing contractual relations with the U.S. Department of Defense and other agencies around the world.MagLev™ BreakthroughThe MagLev™ chiller is the first sustainable compressor design in the air conditioning industry. It runs on a virtually friction-free compressor, which eliminates heat and reduces energy consumption. Designed and manufactured by Multistack LLC of Sparta Wisconsin, the 225-ton air-cooled, magnetic levitation-bearing chiller represents the long-awaited commercial application of a scientific breakthrough in physics and electronics. The mechanical engineering profession has heralded frictionless oil free, motors and compressors based on active magnetic bearings since the 1940s. It is only recently that the emergence of nanosecond fast semiconductors at last provided the fine-tuned electronic control needed to maintain a motor shaft within microscopic tolerances, and opened the way to exciting new applications. The chiller is expected to reduce the energy required to air-condition US Mission’s assembly halls, computer rooms, and offices by up to 30 percent. This should in turn reduce the Mission’s carbon dioxide output by over 25 metric tons annually. In 2008, Martinez International led installation of a Dedicated Heat Recovery Chiller in the U.S Embassy Santiago, Chile. In its first six months of operation, the Santiago system slashed building operation costs by $47,000. Following installation of the Dedicated Heat Recovery Chiller U.S Embassy Santiago required no fuel oil in winter 2008 and reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 82 metric tons.“With the leadership and commitment of the U.S. Department of State and its Overseas Building Operations, we are making a difference around the world,” said Martinez. “These projects provide an ideal platform to highlight cutting-edge U.S. green technology and demonstrate a true commitment to making U.S. Embassies worldwide greener and more efficient. It’s a fantastic legacy and we believe it represents the future of the construction industry.”For more information on the United States Mission in Geneva and its green initiatives, visit http://geneva.usmission.gov/Press2009/0402MagLev.htmlAbout Martinez InternationalFounded by Vern Martinez in 1976, Martinez International Corporation is a leading general contractor focused on delivering outstanding projects to customers around the world. I'm So Full I'm Empty

Where do young people find guidance and inner quiet to figure out who they are and what goals to set?Students today struggle with the overload of impressions, dizzying schedules, persuasive advertising, inappropriate role modeling of superstars and sports figures and stressed households. The challenge of confronting these pressures creates an imbalance and breaks down the resilience pre-teen/adolescents need to find their way through this difficult developmental stage into adulthood. Educator and author Betty Staley will present “I’m So Full I’m Empty” in an appearance at The Denver Waldorf School Monday, April 27th at 7pm. She will describe the necessary aspects of the family, school and community which contribute to resilience. This evening is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.denverwaldorf.org or contact communicate@denverwaldorf.org. The Denver Waldorf School is located at 940 Fillmore Street in the heart of the Congress Park neighborhood of Denver. An educator for 40 years, Betty Staley consults for many schools, in particular Waldorf high schools (independent and public charter), lectures world-wide on adolescence and education, and has authored a total of seven books, among them Beyond Form and Freedom and most recently Adolescence-The Sacred Passage. She has translated the essence of Waldorf education into many different settings in service of transforming education for all children. Having been a key teacher in past decades and a founder of The Sacramento Waldorf School, Betty directs teacher educator programs through Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, California - for independent Waldorf schools and for Waldorf-inspired public schools, for teachers of at-risk students and juvenile offenders, and workshops for public, parochial, and home school teachers. Truth and fantasy

So the latest issue to pop up on the airwaves makes it even clearer that the Bush Administration has left the building. There is a video making its way through cyberspace with President Obama making it abundantly clear that get darker just before they go completely black. The video, apparently edited from an interview, has Obama saying electricty will go up. The cost of heat, operating appliances, doing business, even the cost of "green" all-electric automobiles, the famous and happy alternative to fossil fuels, will spike. These "conveniences" will spike because our president has set a limit on greenhouse gas production. So what is there to say our stopping all of this pointless fossil fuel consumption, as many of the granola-eating tree huggers demand, will be followed by other nations? China is the leader and yet the dumping ground, according to the big boys in the media. Claims have been posted that industrial countries ship electronic waste to China as if it is a global landfill. Really? If there wasn't a plan with the Chinese benefitting, doesn't it seem the government would have derailed the idea immediately? We can pace the floor, wring our hands in dispair cry out to a god we deny exists and still fail to see that for all of its faults, China's government still knows what comes into its country. You can't ship a few metric tons of broken parts without someone knowing.Yet we Americans are supposed to feel bad -- three more lashes for our success.Electric cars were on the drawing board long before Obama was out of law school. Then they were buried like a bad idea. Now, they are treated like the newest flavor in all-natural bread. The idea isn't new, the acceptance by government is.And further, how many people are really understanding how deep the government is involved in private business? How many people remember the philosophies of early America; the simplest government is the best, keep government out of private business, support a free economy... You can't have a free economy, a micro-managing federal government and generations of enabled citizens all in the same society. There will be a conflict. It looks as though we might be on the low side of a cycle predicted many years ago. It has been said that governments exist on a cycle: democracy, aristocracy, and communism. The more people see what the government can give them, the less it is free and the more it becomes an enabling socialist regime. Left to its end, it becomes a form of communism and people eventually rebel, feeding into the top end of democracy... until people again get used to being fed instead of feeding themselves. The truth is everything, even God, has a cost. The fantasy is that we can stand in line and get perfect service every time, no matter the need, without it costing us. Its time to pull our heads out of the sand and realize what kind of a target we're leaving those in charge. The fantasy is quickly changing to horror.
