Precision manufacturer implements new processes to meet customer needs

Berthoud, CO, April 26, 2013 – Colorado WaterJet (CWJ), the leader in abrasive waterjet shape cutting in Colorado, joins a select group of Colorado companies recognized as a Colorado Companies to Watch finalist. This selection acknowledges the company's hard work, growth and success, represented by its commitment to creating new possibilities for its clients, and the company's contribution to business development in the state.

Colorado Companies to Watch honors second-stage companies that develop valuable products and services, create quality jobs, enrich communities and create new industries throughout Colorado. The year-long program is hosted by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and the Edward Lowe Foundation.

The incredible capabilities of the Colorado WaterJet facility makes them stand out among other machining companies. Machine shops and manufacturing facilities come to Colorado Waterjet because they can dramatically speed up the machining process and reduce costs. As a cold cutting process, waterjet cutting doesn’t harden edges or warp materials, which is valuable to machine shops and manufacturers. However, it’s not only the manufacturing industries that appreciate the precision that Colorado WaterJet can offer. Artists and construction companies also use Colorado WaterJet to help them bring their ideas to fruition. Their latest addition of the Mach 4C WaterJet machine provides 5-axis cutting that now makes them even more versatile.

“We pride ourselves on being able to meet the needs of a variety of customers. We have a unique ability to work with exotic and difficult materials and provide quick turnaround times, which gives us an edge in this industry," states Dan Nibbelink, owner and founder. “We continue to stay up-to-date on new processes, technology, and capabilities to give our customers the best experience.

"Colorado Companies to Watch is pleased to recognize Colorado WaterJet as a 2013 Finalist. Based in Berthoud, Colorado WaterJet is growing its footprint and contribution to Colorado's economy. We look forward to supporting Colorado WaterJet's long-term success in our state," said Sam Bailey, Program Director, Colorado Companies to Watch.

Loveland artist’s Cell Series of paintings finds unique placement in literary and scientific community

Loveland, CO – For many, cancer is foreboding, but when it touched the life of Angela Canada Hopkins (www.CanadaHopkins.com), she took inspiration from the challenge. Ms. Hopkins initially painted the disease by deconstructing microscope slides of cancer cells and reinterpreting them. Now, her work has progressed to a more abstract style that references general characteristics of cells. Her unique combination of science and art is beginning to garner more attention. Recently, Canada Hopkins licensed one of her pieces for the cover of The Abundance: A Novel by Amit Majmudar (http://www.amitmajmudar.com/fiction--the-abundance.html). Elsewhere, the scientific community is finding her artwork a perfect complement to their work spaces, symposiums, and conferences.

Cover art for a novel about cancer seems to be an ideal placement for Hopkins’s cancer cell artwork. When Rick Pracher, Art Director at Henry Holt and Company (http://us.macmillan.com/henryholt.aspx), researched artwork for the cover of Abundance: A Novel, he went looking for images that would juxtapose the ideas within the novel. His research brought him to Angela’s paintings. “I thought the description of the unusual beauty in something so destructive fit harmoniously with the novel,” Pracher remarked. The novel tells how a grandmother quietly accepts her fate but hopes one last visit from her family can heal a longstanding divide. The family slowly discovers the healing effect that a fight with cancer can have. Released on March 5th of this year, sales of the book have been modest, but reviews are very good and “the author loves the jacket,” says Pracher.

Canada Hopkins’s artwork is slated to be displayed at the invitation-only opening gala of the new Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI - http://www.otradi.org/). A multi-tenant bioscience complex in Portland, Oregon, OTRADI will host its opening event on May 9th and feature several of Angela’s Cell Series paintings. The paintings will remain on display to tenants and the public at the facility until July. The growing area of bioscience finds a complement in Hopkins’ fascinating artwork, and the cellular themes fit right in with the OTRADI research facility’s mission.

Hopkins is finding increasing interest in her work from cancer- and health-related symposiums and discussions. Conference planners and researchers find that her paintings enhance discussions surrounding cancer and the science behind diseases and disorders. Late in 2012, Canada Hopkins’s work was featured at the Genentech & Livestrong Rev Forum (http://www.rev-forum.com/) in Austin, Texas. More recently, Hopkins’s Cell No. 9 was used for the cover of the program for the Monell Chemical Senses Center’s Spring Colloquium (http://www.monell.org/), a seminar on cells and biology. Kelly Van Sickle, development coordinator for Monell, was pleased to find such appropriate artwork for their event, noting that "Angela’s artwork on our program booklet was a big hit with our guests!" Canada Hopkins is delighted that her work has such significance to others, and can add interest and color to sometimes-staid science and biology research events, spaces, and publications.

About Angela Canada Hopkins

After her father succumbed to cancer in June 2001, Angela Canada Hopkins decided the best way to overcome her new "enemy" was by embracing it through her art. Each painting begins with a slide of a cell, which she then deconstructs and reinterprets using triumphant colors and bold brush strokes. Each canvas telegraphs a message of hope to cancer sufferers, cancer survivors, and their loved ones. Canada Hopkins is a full-time artist and resides in Loveland, Colorado, with her husband, James. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections, including South BendMemorialHospital, South Bend, Indiana and KetteringMedicalCenter, Kettering, Ohio. It has also been featured on the cover of Wavelength Journal and four issues of the Journal of Oncology Navigation and Survivorship. Robins "puffing up" in the snow

2013_04_18-08_38_14-3166-closeup-robins-in-colorado-snow.jpg
We've had quite a bit of late-season snow ... which is good for the ski areas and moisture ... not so good for my Little League baseball team!    ;-)

This morning was beautiful with the sun glistening on the foot of snow that blanketed the ground and trees. While out for a morning walk in East Boulder County, I came across a group of Robins in the snow that were warming themselves by PUFFING UP - pretty cool to see 'em up close and here are a few pictures - more at the link.

Boy Scout "Scout Show" not just for Scouts!

31040784060?profile=original

DENVER, COLO – The Boy Scouts of America, Denver Area Council are preparing for the annual Scout Show to be held on April 27, 2013, 10am to 4pm at the National Western Stock Show Complex.  Make sure you get this great family outing on your calendar.  The Scout Show is a tremendous opportunity for the public to see what Scouting is all about, with hands-on activities and great prizes! The Scout Show is an interactive event in which Scouts and Scouting units can showcase what Scouting has to offer to the youth of our community. There will be more than 200 booths to visit, each offering an activity, a game or a “hands-on” experience.  The possibilities are endless - you could climb to the roof of the arena, cross a rope bridge, catch a trout, experience camp cooking, paddle a canoe, give blood or just enjoy the entertainment that will be hosted throughout the day.  There are activities for all ages.

Scouting groups from around the Denver metro area plan fun activities for this event, and many local businesses host booths with food, drinks and items for sale.  The Scout Show provides inexpensive entertainment for the whole family and is open to the public.  Stop in for a visit and you’ll end up spending the

day!  Cost to enter for the event is $10 for the entire family, and up to $5 of that can go to your local Scouting Unit. Public is welcome to come and attend the event.

This year the Denver Area Council will be celebrating its 100 year Anniversary. For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America, Denver Area Council has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of Denver's youth. Through A Year of Celebration, we celebrate this legacy and commit ourselves to inspire and prepare future generations. Our 100th anniversary represents much more than a date on the calendar. It represents an important milestone around which to reintroduce Scouting to Denver and to celebrate our rich heritage and to reinforce the important role Scouting will play in shaping our community's future.

Scouting is composed of three different developmental programs to meet the needs of the youth in your area. The Cub Scouts has family and neighborhood based program for 1st - 5th grad

e boys. Cub Scouting combines outdoor activities, sports, academics and more, in a fun and exciting program that helps families teach ideals such as honesty, good citizenship and respect. The Boy Scouts is for boys ages 11-18 and teaches them life skills. Venturing is for boys and girls ages 14-21 and teaches them leadership skills through high adventure activities. Scouts explore a variety of new interests and activities with other youth their age.

In 2012, the Scout Show had more than 15,000 people come through the doors at National Western, and we are hoping on an even bigger turn out this year. Local Packs, Troops, and Crews are canvassing the Denver Metro Area Selling Camp Cards, which include a ticket for the family to attend Scout Show. Of the $10 cost for a Camp Card, up to $5 of that can go to the Scouting Units at your local schools, and churches to help send

a boy to camp this summer.

To purchase a ticket to the event along with discounts to local area stores, you can show up at the National Western Complex ticket booth, or contact Scot Fuller at scot.fuller@scouting.org to ensure that some of the proceeds from the sale go towards the Scouting Units at your local church or school. To find a Scouting unit near you, please visit www.BeAScout.org. The Denver Area Council BSA serves over 53,000 young people in the Denver Metro Area. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is a challenge on many people’s bucket list. However, the participants of the 2012 Kilimanjaro Stage Run learned that if there’s anything more challenging than climbing Kilimanjaro, it’s running around it.

Last October, ten ultra runners, including Boulder residents Krissy Moehl and Jake Zmrhal, became the first people in history to run a complete, 160 mile circuit around Mount Kilimanjaro. Their experiences were documented by South African film maker Andrew King in a beautiful short film called Mountain of Greatness.

Mountain of Greatness was enthusiastically received by the audiences of the Trails in Motion Film Festival in South Africa and at Rainshadow Running’s Trail Running Film Festival in Troutdale, Oregon. Now, Mountain of Greatness is coming to Boulder.

At 7:30 pm on Thursday, May 23, the Boulder Patagonia store will host a screening of Mountain of Greatness followed by a question and answer session with top female ultra runner Krissy Moehl, extreme athlete Jake Zmrhal, and Simon Mtuy, Race Director of the Kilimanjaro Stage Run.

Doors open at 7:10 and light refreshments will be served. Come with your questions and your passion for trail running.

Students Make Hats Today, History Tomorrow

The scene is bursting with energy. Fourth and fifth grade students buzz around the studio, procuring feathers, sheets of foam, pencils, and glue. They discuss their vision excitedly amongst themselves, planning how they will incorporate colors, styles, patterns, and structure into their design. This is the hat-making workshop at Arts Street in Denver, but the students are learning skills far beyond how to make a hat.

In this innovative workshop, students discussed the societal roles of hat-wearers, engaged in role play, and created their own characters. They were asked to consider the concepts of pattern, looking at examples and creating their own variations. These creative activities not only allowed them to be expressive and interact with each other in an artistic sphere, but also conveyed valuable life lessons. These lessons include strategic planning, presentation, and storytelling, skills increasingly vital to every career in the twenty-first century.

Arts Street, the host of the workshop, offers creative job training programs and workshops to many students like these each year. The non-profit organization firmly believes in the power of the arts to unleash students' creativity and lead them to a career. Nearly all of the students they serve qualify for free or reduced lunch at school, and most of them do not experience these types of creative, hands-on activities in the classroom.

Stella Yu, Arts Street Executive Director, has been in the business of crafting a strong future for disadvantaged students for over two decades. She speaks of job training in creative fields as the key to success for students seeking employment in today's economy and job market. The secret, she says, is finding something to do that is “valuable to society...and that someone will pay you” for. The organization's motto, “Creative Kids Today, Smart Workforce Tomorrow,” is carried out in profound ways each year, as more and more students gain creative skills and go on to find purposeful jobs. With an impressive alumni network and plans to expand the current programming to reach more neighborhood students, Arts Street is certainly helping to shape tomorrow's workforce into a powerful creative entity.

And, thanks to private donations from foundations and individuals as well as public grants, Arts Street is well equipped to embody its mission. Near the building, one can find murals painted by Arts Street students, who learn how to work collaboratively and creatively while being paid for their work. Their space itself, designed by an Arts Street alum, is a working studio for professional artists, while also a well-stocked classroom for all kinds of workshops. Featuring a Mac computer lab, kitchen area, projector system, and several tables for creative work, the room hosts a wide variety of events, from extracurricular programs, to community job training workshops in technological fields, to open studio days. In fact, every Saturday morning, everyone in the community is welcome for a free breakfast and time to create artwork. All art materials are free, and participants have the opportunity to sell their work for profit later on. Recently, Arts Street has brought in guest teachers to provide training open to the public in the emerging fields of technological communication and neighborhood asset mapping. This summer, they will offer classes for high school students in topics such as cognitive storytelling and functional art in the community.

A dozen elementary school students walked in the doors of Arts Street today. They walked out with invaluable skills that will allow them to reach the kinds of emerging careers which the twenty-first century desperately needs.

BOULDER, CO. – Attention Homes announced that Thursday, April 25th is the Grand Re-Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting of its Runaway & Homeless Youth (RHY) shelter. The ceremony will begin at 10 am and self-guided house tours will follow the ribbon cutting to view the 2,200 sq. ft. expansion of the shelter which will serve unaccompanied homeless youth (ages 13-24). Featured speakers include Matthew Appelbaum, Mayor of Boulder; Suzy Ageton, City of Boulder Council Member; and Pat Coyle, the Director of the Colorado Division of Housing. A special proclamation in recognition of the Grand Re-Opening will be presented on behalf of John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado (by Karla Maraccini, Director of Community Partnerships for the Office of the Governor.)

“The Grand Re-Opening of our RHY shelter is significant in two ways,” says Jim Rianoshek, Executive Director of Attention Homes. “First, this fully funded $613,000 project reflects the spirit of generosity that exists here within our community. Anyone who has raised children or worked closely with teens, knows that it takes an extended family and community to raise a child. We are so thankful to the many individuals, businesses and organizations that have supported us every step of the way on this eight month construction project.”

“The second way,” Mr. Rianoshek goes on to say, “is that the renovation of our shelter – the only youth shelter in Boulder County  -  increases our capacity to provide emergency overnight shelter up to16 boys and girls per night (up from 10) and also allows us to serve 40 youth per day (up from 25) in our day drop-in program. Our hope, with continued community support, is to provide increased supervision and case management; improved mental and physical health care services; family mediation, and both educational and vocational support.”

Attention Homes provides comprehensive care and shelter to runaway, homeless and at-risk youth. In 2012, the organization served 530 youth in its RHY shelter, a 172% increase over the previous year. Through street outreach, day drop-in services and overnight emergency shelter, staff and trained volunteers seek to reduce the estimated 162 unaccompanied youth who are without safe shelter on any given night. While family reunification is the primary goal; when it’s not possible, Attention Homes finds transitional bridges to more permanent housing. In 2012, 81% of Attention Homes’ overnight shelter youth were able to return home to their families or became self-sufficient.

Bowes Spiegel Architects Inc. & Project Managers and Symmetry Builders, Inc. led the design and construction team. Major benefactors include the Wyss Foundation and Jackie Long, the City of Boulder Affordable Housing Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities, The Colorado Group, and The Steffens Foundation.

The public is invited to attend the Grand Re-Opening Celebration scheduled for Thursday, April 25th from 10 am – 12 pm. The Attention Homes Runaway & Homeless Youth Shelter is located at 3080 Broadway Ave., Boulder, CO. RSVP by emailing sdavidson@attentionhomes.org. Street parking is available on Elder St., 13th St. and North Boulder Recreation Center. RTD stops at the shelter location. For more information about Attention Homes, call 303.447.1206.

Arvada business recognized for contributions to the community

Arvada, Colo. — Faustson Tool (www.faustson.com), a worldwide leader in five-axis manufacturing technology, was recently honored by the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation (www.jeffco.org) at the 20th Annual Industry Appreciation Awards Breakfast. At the March 21st event, held at the Arvada Center for Arts & Humanities, Jeffco EDC presented Faustson with a Business Recognition Award for the company’s growth in primary employment and capital investment.

“Receiving an award like this requires the right combination of management, stellar employees, and the latest and greatest equipment, and I feel as though we have all of those elements in place,” said Faustson Director of Operations Heidi Hostetter. “We continue to take pride in our tenacity and commitment to remain pioneers in the precision manufacturing and machining industry here in Colorado. Watch what we plan to unveil in 2013!”

Faustson Tool was nominated for the award by the Colorado Association of Manufacturing and Technology, and was recognized based on the company’s substantial contributions to the community and its reputation for innovation and excellence. In 2012 Faustson Tool increased employment from 15 to 20 highly skilled employees, and added more than $850,000 in capital investment. Other organizations receiving Business Recognition Awards included Adaptive Innovations Corp., the Coleman Company, Datalogix, Rocky Mountain Bottle Company, SourceGas, and Sundyne Corp.

“As we try to encourage job growth and capital investment in Jefferson County, it is important for us to recognize the businesses and individuals who have made significant contributions in these areas over the past year. In Jeffco, we are fortunate to have a healthy mix of innovative and growing businesses. They have earned this recognition,” said Kevin McCasky, President and CEO of Jeffco EDC.

Faustson Tool has been a presence in the community for more than 30 years. Founded in 1981 by Paul and Alicia Svaldi, Faustson began as a small business in an 80-square-foot space, with one milling machine and two employees servicing off-load machine shops. The Svaldi’s keen insight into the future of high-precision manufacturing placed them on the cutting edge of manufacturing technology, where they have been ever since. In the 1980s, Faustson was the first manufacturer to demonstrate the benefits of electric discharge machining technology (EDM), also known as “spark eroding”. In the 1990s Faustson was the first to demonstrate the benefits of five-axis milling and its potential to change the face of manufacturing. Five-axis milling machines have a cutting accuracy of five millionths of an inch, smaller than a strand of hair.

Today, Faustson Tool has grown into a 16,000-square-foot facility with more than 20 highly skilled employees, and is owned and operated by Alicia Svaldi. Faustson Tool remains in the vanguard of the manufacturing industry, continuing a tradition of pioneering the newest technology and pushing its limits. Faustson Tool takes on the most challenging applications only a few U.S. companies can handle, using high-end precision machining to do things no one else in the industry thinks can be done. Faustson’s reputation for innovation and determination has earned the company prestigious clientele: Faustson Tool was called upon to manufacture a key component in NASA’s Kepler space telescope, and has worked with Bell Aerospace to produce parts for the U.S. F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter jet.

About Faustson Tool

Faustson Tool, a worldwide leader in the machining industry, provides services for clients worldwide in medical, aerospace, aeronautics, defense, semiconductor and other industries. The company, founded in 1982, provides 3-, 4- and 5-axis milling and 5-axis EDM services, as well as turning capabilities for cutting-edge custom part production, and efficient production of standard parts. Faustson Tool is woman-owned-and-operated small business. For more information, visit www.faustson.com, email hhostetter@faustson.com or call (303) 420-7422.

Boulder Lodge #9's Junior Past Grand Fred Smith was honored on March 17, 2013 with a dinner in his honor.  The dinner took place at the Boulder lodge in downtown Boulder.

Fittingly for the date, the dinner was an Irish feast of corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage. Around 50 members, friends and family attended.  After the dinner, a band, consisting of PG Kyle Graham and friends, entertained the attendees.

Fred served as Noble Grand for calendar year 2012. Highlights of his term included service projects such as sorting food for a local food bank and gathering food during a Thanksgiving food drive. The lodge also hosted a number of major events which brought the public into the lodge and introduced them to the IOOF.

According to Fred, his time as Noble Grand was a learning experience, and overall, a positive one. Fred said "I learned more from the rocky times than the food times."

Previous Past Grands were honored at the dinner as well.

Business Provides State-of-the-Art Material Shaping Services to Customers

Berthoud, Colo. – Colorado WaterJet Company (CWJ), the leader in abrasive waterjet shape cutting in Colorado, announces the addition of new, state-of-the-art 5-axis waterjet technology to its precision machining and fabrication services. The company’s latest machine, the Mach 4C WaterJet from Flow, features the most advanced technology in the industry, and provides the most accurate bevel and 3D cutting capabilities available.

“This machine, combined with our highly-trained and experienced staff, gives us the most advanced material-shaping capabilities in Colorado,” says CWJ President Dan Nibbelink.

 Mach4_2.jpg?width=200

The Flow Mach 4c’s 5-axis capabilities provide up to 60 degrees of motion, which means faster, more intricate precision cutting of any shape, including interior cuts. The machine is capable of shaping virtually any composite material, regardless of thickness, including stone, steel, aluminum, tile, rubber foam and glass.

Overall, waterjet technology is more advanced and cost effective than comparative cutting technologies like band saws and lasers. The cold cutting process requires no heat and eliminates hardened edges, slag and warping. It allows for close nesting of parts for efficient use of material that reduces waste. The computerized, numerically controlled system significantly improves turnaround time and eliminates cutting and processing errors associated with non-waterjet systems.

“This technology is versatile, and opens up many possibilities to our clients in various industries because we can offer highly precise machining of almost any material in any shape or size,” says Nibbelink.

About Colorado WaterJet Company
