One month, 2,000 miles and countless friends later, Ryan Van Duzer is nearing Washington, D.C. on his two-wheeled, cross-country expedition. On June 20, Van Duzer departed from San Diego on a three-speed cruiser bike and is scheduled to arrive in the nation’s capital by August 10 for a celebration of his journey with the League of American Bicyclists and the National Geographic Society. While the trip is ending soon, you can still experience Duzer (a witty character with bikes on the brain), donate to Community Cycles (http://www.communitycycles.org/media/37-2009-media/185-duzer-across-america.html), and sign up for Team Wonderbike (http://www.teamwonderbike.com) before his trip ends. The cross-country trip appropriately concludes in Washington, D.C., where he will proudly share his message of bicycle advocacy. With some details still to be determined, Van Duzer will be the toast of a public event in National Geographic’s courtyard where he will meet with representatives from the League of American Bicyclists as well as Bicycle Friendly Business designees and members of the Congressional Bike Caucus. “The League of American Bicyclists is excited to welcome Ryan Van Duzer to D.C.,” said Andy Clarke, League of American Bicyclists President. “Duzer embodies the League’s philosophy that bicycling can be used for fun, fitness and transportation. We are eager to hear his stories of how America is truly becoming a bicycle-friendly nation one community at a time.” As he pedals across the nation, Van Duzer spreads the gospel of New Belgium Brewing’s Team Wonderbike and his life-long passion for biking. He continues to meet with advocacy groups, bike lovers, and city planners from America’s Bicycle Friendly Communities (http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/communities/) as recognized by the League of American Bicyclists. “My trek so far has encouraged my belief that people everywhere love simple things – a home cooked meal, a trusty bike, a good beer,” said Van Duzer. “As I start heading toward our nation’s capital I am enthusiastic about how we as a country can benefit by more people embracing the two-wheeled lifestyle.” People across the country have been tuning in to Van Duzer’s personal story through his charismatic video diary, blogs, and Twitter and Facebook updates. Track his journey at http://www.newbelgium.com/duzer and come along when he gets to your area to share a meal, a beer or a bike ride. New Belgium Brewing, maker of Fat Tire Amber Ale, is sponsoring Van Duzer’s travels as part of its Team Wonderbike initiatives (http://www.newbelgium.com/team-wonderbike). Team Wonderbike was created by New Belgium to inspire and encourage folks to use their bike instead of their car as often as possible. Team Wonderbike membership is currently 18,000 strong, with more joining daily as Van Duzer’s trek gets people thinking, “If he can ride across the country, I can ride to work!” “With the help of the League of American Bicyclists, we are seeing the magic of a nationwide network of bicycle advocates pulling together,” said Bryan Simpson, New Belgium Spokesperson and Team Wonderbike Spokes Model. “We’ve seen people across the country join Ryan on rides or offer him a place to sleep. We’ve witnessed the bicycling community rally together for a cause. It’s nothing short of inspirational.” Visit http://www.newbelgium.com/duzer to look at the map and watch Duzer’s video blog.

"MacBeth Did It" Teenagers on stage at LTC

Longmont Theatre Company’s Youth Theatre is proud to announce its first ever youth theatre production. For its first ever production the company will be putting on a production of ‘MacBeth Did It’ by John Patrick. How is this different from other youth theatre shows? Unlike the youth theatre summer workshops or 24 hour one act festivals, students had to audition and were not guranteed a part in the show. The cast and crew are also putting on the show on a volunteer basis. Just like a normal show at LTC.Gathering experience before tackling the "Big Time" in New York, director Larry Rencher (played by Matt Barham) has decided to undertake "Macbeth," drawing oh his faithful & generally hammy cadre of local theatre buffs. The role of Lady Macbeth is assigned to Dolly Dibble (played by Tori Young) whose husband owns the theatre with the other parts being parceled out with similar logic. As rehearsals begin, so do the hilarious complications & misunderstandings until, harried & out of patience, the director storms off in a huff-leaving maters in the hands of the meddlesome newcomer whose "suggestions" have been a thorn in his side. As they will, things then go from bad to worse, until the director is wooed into returning & despite the fact that Dolly's tipsy husband gets his head stuck in the witches' cauldron somehow everything gets pulled together in time for the fateful moment of opening night.Performances will be August 7-9, 2009. Tickets are $10, and are avaible on the web and at the door. “This is what happens when Shakespeare & Community Theatre.”

Chinese Barbarians & Autism

Here Read:+ China Special: A new evil in our world / MountEverest.net:"Think live lobsters in Chinese restaurant water tanks, waiting for you to walk in and order. Now imagine people in the place of the lobsters. This is not a joke. It's for real and as bad as it comes.""According to the Canadian investigation, supported by media, state reports and international human right watch groups: there are 36 death camps in China, where organs are taken while prisoners - many young and healthy people abducted by authorities - are still alive.""The procedure is simple. If you need a heart, a kidney, a brain or a new eye retina - you just contact one of the numerous hospitals advertising transplant services in China. They'll tell you what they have in stock, or direct you to check the supply straight with a court or a prison.""There 'beating hearts' are waiting for you, most in their thirties or forties, unaware of their fate."+ Deep Flaws, and Little Justice, in China's Court System / NY Times:"... forced confessions remain endemic in a judicial system that faces pressure to maintain 'social stability' at all costs."+ Human Rights In China / Facts and Details:"China has been accused of using torture and arbitrary detention and denying people basic freedoms of speech, press and religion.""In March 2008, the United States State Department removed China from its list of the 10 worst human rights violators. It did so just before the Tibetan uprising. A report said that China’s 'overall human rights record remained poor,' the government increasingly harasses people thought to be a threat to the state and abuses found in China included 'extrajudicial killings, torture and coerced confessions of prisoners and the use of forced labor.' THE STATE DEPARTMENT DIDN'T SAY WHY CHINA WAS REMOVED FROM THE LIST."+ Complaint For Deprivation Of Constitutional Rights And Privileges by Virtue of a RICO Criminal Enterprise / Falun Gong at Findlaw ( For Professionals / News and Commentary / Featured Documents / Falun Gong)+ China arming terrorists / Washington Times (found in Free Republic ):“New intelligence reveals China is covertly supplying large quantities of small arms and weapons to insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban militia in Afghanistan, through Iran.”'Some arms were sent by aircraft directly from Chinese factories to Afghanistan and included large-caliber sniper rifles, millions of rounds of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades and components for roadside bombs, as well as other small arms."+ Zimbabwe Arms Shipped by China Spark an Uproar / NY Times:"A Chinese ship loaded with armaments for Zimbabwe steamed into the port of Durban this week and set off a political firefight, putting newfound pressure on South Africa — and now China — to reduce support for Zimbabwe’s government as it cracks down on its rivals after a disputed election."+ Policy Brief on Electronic Voting Systems / Brennan Center For Justice (NYU School of Law):"All three of the most commonly purchased electronic voting systems have significant security and reliability vulnerabilities.""Few jurisdictions have implemented any of the key countermeasures that could make the least difficult attacks against voting systems much more difficult to execute."+ Autism Risk linked To Distance From Power Plants, Other Mercury-releasing Sources / Science News, 2008:—“A newly published study of Texas school district data and industrial mercury-release data, conducted by researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, indeed shows a statistically significant link between pounds of industrial release of mercury and increased autism rates. Vacuuming tends to mix the air within the room such that the one foot and five foot heights are similar immediately after vacuuming. A vacuum can become contaminated by mercury such that it cannot be easily decontaminated. Vacuuming a carpet where a lamp has broken and been visibly cleaned up, even weeks after the cleanup, can elevate the mercury readings over the MAAG in an un-vented room.”+ Mercury in vaccines as a cause of autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASDs): A failed hypothesis:—“The fires of hysteria were stoked even higher by Robert F. RFK Jr. almost single-handedly managed to stoke fears that vaccines were causing an “epidemic of autism.”+ ‘Green’ lightbulbs poison workers / TimesOnline:—“Large numbers of Chinese workers have been poisoned by mercury, which forms part of the compact fluorescent lightbulbs. A surge in foreign demand … has also led to the reopening of mercury mines that have ruined the environment.”OBAMA & CO = THE DEVIL!!!

Local Restaurant Hosts Children’s Author to benefit area kids “It’s our way of giving back,” the manager of Capers Italian Bistro on Airport Road explains. The restaurant is hosting a book signing with award-winning author Gary Metivier this Saturday night from 5-7 pm. All of the proceeds from the book sales and a portion of the restaurant receipts that night will be given to Camp Wapiyapi (near Estes Park) for its cancer camp. “Every year I take my family on vacation to Estes Park,” the author explains. “We hike, fish and enjoy the outdoors. It’s an important part of the year for us as a family. I decided a couple of years ago—I wanted to help sick children be able to go to camp to have that kind of experience. There are great groups out there that are making sure they can do that for free.” Metivier, a television news anchor and writer, decided to write his first book “Willie’s Wagon” (Mom’s Choice Winner) as a fundraiser for a local cancer camp. The early reader chapter book quickly became a bestseller and local school children were clamoring for more. “I’ve been invited to more than a 100 schools in the past year. The students kept asking, ‘What’s next for Willie?’ so, I had to get to work on the second book.” Metivier released “A Hog Ate My Homework! A Willie’s Wagon Adventure” (Moonbeam Award Winner) last fall. It also became a bestseller. Combined the books and appearances have helped raise about $60,000 to support children’s charities. “Our goal is simple,” he explains. “We are trying to help inspire healthy children to read and to think of other people—and support sick children along the way.” You can meet Gary Metivier at Capers 600 S. Airport Road, Longmont this Saturday night from 5-7pm. There will be drawings for prizes every half hour. Find out more about his books and projects at www.willieswagon.com. Books are also available on amazon.

Danger is only a laptop away!

Health alert! Beware of your laptop. The damn thing has already cost me one angioplasty (heart surgery) and I'm pretty sure I will need weight loss surgery of some kind soon too. Maybe I could sue Microsoft or Dell and charge that they are in a conspiracy with the health care industry. Maybe Google too. That damn thing keeps me glued to my chair, reading, blogging, but mostly getting fat and out of shape. I should be working out instead sitting here being assaulted by this cold-blooded killer. It's a vicious battle, the pounds keep piling on. I need a plan, a way to break free of the spell of this serial killer. Heeeelllllppppppp.......

Integrated Asset Services®, LLC (IAS®) (www.iasreo.com), a leader in default management and residential collateral valuations, today released its IAS360™ House Price Index (HPI). Based on the timeliest and most granular data available in the industry, the benchmark index for national house prices gained 1.6% in May. The latest IAS report, which reflects the largest one-month increase in the IAS360 HPI since July of 2005, follows a fractional gain in April. The index had previously fallen more than 19% from its high-water mark in June of 2007. U.S. house prices are still down 10.5% year over year, but all four of the U.S. census regions reported positive numbers for May. In order of gains, the Northeast was up 3.2%, the Midwest 1.9%, the South 1.1%, and the West 0.9%. The South was the only census region down in April. “Two month's worth of positive data hardly signals a turn in the national housing market," said Dave McCarthy, President and CEO of Integrated Asset Services, “but we have to be encouraged by what we’re seeing in several important counties and neighborhoods.” In fact, the IAS360 HPI reported gains in May for nine of the nation’s 10 largest metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), a notable turnaround from just two months ago when Denver was the only region in the nation with positive performance. For its part, Denver added another 0.4% in May, while Boston and Chicago followed solid April numbers with increases of 3.7% and 1.5%, respectively. The gains in the West, meanwhile, were particularly apparent with San Francisco up 3.0%, Los Angeles 2.8%, and San Diego 1.2%. Only the Las Vegas housing market continued to slide with a drop of 0.9% for the month. “We’re seeing a mix shift in home sales and that’s manifesting itself as increased pricing,” said John Burns, CEO of John Burns Real Estate Consulting. “For a while, the bulk of homes sales were distressed properties in declining neighborhoods. Home affordability combined with tax credits have proven compelling. Sales are shifting back to more traditional submarkets and neighborhoods. That said, there is still a lot of downward pressure on pricing due to foreclosures and recent changes in the appraisal process. We aren’t out of the woods yet.” “With all of the political and regulatory uncertainties combined with rising unemployment and foreclosure inventories, it’s too soon to speculate that a housing recovery is really here,” said McCarthy. “However, I’m confident that the IAS360 will be the first to report a turn in the markets when they start to occur.” The IAS360 House Price Index is a comprehensive housing index tracking monthly change in the median sales price of detached single-family residences across the U.S. The index, based on all arms-length transactions, tracks data of 15,000 neighborhoods, that roll up to report on the changes in 360 counties, nine census divisions, four regions, and the nation overall. The IAS360 House Price Index is delivered on a monthly basis.

Warm summer days naturally invite people to run through the sprinklers, drink ice-cold beverages and devour delicious gourmet food hot from the grill. With around 65 percent of American homes owning one or more outdoor grills or smokers, they’ve become a popular way to bring friends and family together. Whether you are a novice at the grill or possess cooking-with-live-fire prowess, Weber recently launched a trio of videos aimed to motivate grillers everywhere. Weber’s Grill Master Series features grilling’s elite Jamie Purviance and Steven Raichlen as they compare notes on techniques, what inspired these classically trained chefs to pursue the art of cooking with live fire, and what led to their biggest grilling mistakes. As part of Weber’s Grill Master Series, Raichlen and Purviance discuss what inspired them to become professional outdoor grilling experts and teachers. By tapping into their current projects, it lights the fire in all of us to learn new techniques and try out new recipes. Sample a taste of inspiration here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRN-VTuA0aw. It’s important to Grill Masters to truly understand what a grill does to food. It doesn’t merely heat it up, it offers the inherent nature of fire to enhance flavor. A Grill Master understands the difference in woods, briquettes, and temperature control to deliver results. This video explores “Cooking with Live Fire,” offering delicious insights from Purviance and Raichlen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBC3x4eTEDQ . The process of becoming a Master Griller may have some hiccups along the way, and that’s okay. This is a journey! Do you overcrowd your grill? Do you control the fire or let it control you? Whether you’ve experienced a towering inferno or impatiently used a grill before you’ve become acquainted, own your mistakes and move on. Take a look at the Masters’ mistakes and learn from them: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRN-VTuA0aw). Who ARE these Grill Masters? In case you haven't had the opportunity to watch them on television or try recipes from their top-selling grilling cookbooks, Jamie Purviance and Steven Raichlen are passionate backyard chef royalty. Jamie Purviance graduated from Stanford University and the Culinary Institute of America (with high honors) before launching his career as a food writer. He is the author of several best-selling cookbooks, including Weber’s Real Grilling™ (which has sold almost one million copies to date), Weber’s Charcoal Grilling™, and his newest book Weber’s Way to Grill™. He has appeared on several national television shows as well as on PBS, CNN, the History Channel and the Food Network. As a regular contributor to national newspapers and magazines—and a popular teacher at cooking schools across the country—Purviance has helped millions of people to grill like professionals. Steven Raichlen is a journalist, TV host, and multi-award-winning author—but he may be best known as the man who reinvented barbecue. Raichlen wrote the best-selling Barbecue Bible cookbook series (more than 4 million copies in print). Raichlen has appeared on virtually every major national TV show. In 2000, in partnership with Weber Grills, he created Barbecue University, a unique cooking school held at the luxurious Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, which was hailed by the Food Network as the “#1 Barbecue Experience in the U.S.” Raichlen also battled—and defeated—Iron Chef Roksbura Michiba in a “Battle of the Barbecue Gods” on Japanese television. This year they are performing, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit," and 'Wipeout.'The Elementary program is proud to present 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit.'Peter Rabbit, unlike sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, is following the advice of his tummy (and his cousin, Benjamin) versus the advice of his mother. But Mom and Pop's daughter Midge and all the loyal Avalon kids are determined-they're not going to let that happen! Riptide, the local kahuna, enters the big surf contest to vie for the grand prize money that will keep The Shack's doors open, but the crowd from the Cove will do anything to put the kibosh on Rip winning the prize money, including sabotage! When Riptide breaks his leg in a surfing accident (thanks to the conniving developer's son Reef), it's up to Midge to step onto her Billabong and go up against the big boys. Pop, a former surfing champion himself, comes through to help his little surfer girl in a sweet surfing cram session that gets all the kids amped for the big event!
