The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) announced the Nonprofit Infrastructure (NPI) Grant Program, a statewide grant program for small, community-based, nonprofit organizations providing services to communities who have historically been underrepresented, underserved, or under-resourced.

Nonprofits in Boulder, Larimer and Broomfield counties can apply here:

https://uwaylc.smapply.io/prog/the_nonprofit_infrastructure_grant_program/

The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), through the Regional Access Partners Network, seeks small nonprofit applicants, with annual budgets between $150,000 and $2,000,000, that have been affected by the infrastructure aftermath of COVID-19. While the grant is not for programming, it does open doors for other opportunities such as strategic planning, professional development for board and staff, technology, etc.

The application will open on July 5, 2023 and close on August 31, 2023.

The Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant Program

The Nonprofit Infrastructure Grant was created after the Colorado House Bill 22-1356 was signed into law on June 3, 2022, to help underrepresented communities with limited access to state and federal funding and those impacted and disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The emphasis on infrastructure and capacity building will help small nonprofits build critical staff and boards, while providing funds to proactively invest in the organization’s makeup. The grant is designed for nonprofits in historically-marginalized communities that need more foundational help. $33,100,000 in grants will be awarded - with selected organizations awarded up to $100,000.

Additionally, if a tax-exempt charitable or social welfare group operating under a 501(c)(3) acts as a fiscal sponsor to small community-based groups (SCBG) that are not registered nonprofit organizations, those groups are also eligible for this grant funding.

“The NPI grant is an incredible opportunity for infrastructure and capacity building that will support the state’s small nonprofit community,” said Kodi Johnson, program manager at the Department of Local Affairs. “DOLA is urging qualifying organizations across the state to apply and continue to deepen the impact that nonprofits and their donors have on supporting historically underrepresented, underserved or under-resourced Coloradans.”

How to Apply

To apply, interested applicants should contact their geographically-appointed Regional Access Partner (RAP) directly for technical assistance and to learn more about the process, criteria and funding. RAPs are collaborating with DOLA to help select and administer grants within their particular regions, emphasizing a hyper-local focus on teamwork and support.

Organizations must provide a Unique Entity ID (UEI) number from the federal government and meet the eligibility requirements. Applications are submitted directly through one of the eight Regional Access Partners (RAPs), determined by the location of the organization’s headquarters. Funding is allocated for infrastructure needs only. Grant awardees will be notified by their RAP by January 31, 2024.

“Together DOLA and the RAP network are focused on ensuring that eligible nonprofit organizations in the state are aware of this opportunity,” added Johnson. “It is the Program’s goal to put forth the resources to help nonprofits apply and build capacity and infrastructure post COVID-19.”

Student Debt Relief Help!

17-year-old kids are not equipped to make financial decisions that will alter the course of their lives for years to come. In America, however, this is unfortunately the norm as millions of high schoolers choose to take out student loans to pay for their college tuition without fully grasping the implications of this decision on their later lives.

My name is Katie and I very recently married my best friend, Joel. We met at Pepperdine University, where we had a great experience, but unfortunately also accumulated over $200,000 in student loan debt between the two of us. While we are both grateful for the time we spent at Pepperdine and the people we met, we both agree that our 17-year-old selves did not fully understand that we would be placing our future selves in crippling debt.

I work a remote job and my husband is currently in the job search – applying to 20+ jobs per day, but still being turned down despite his Pepperdine degree. Once he finds a full-time job, we both will most likely also have to pick up a part-time minimum wage job to stay afloat and meet our monthly student loan payments totaling a little over $3,000. We are actively doing everything we can, but are still suffering under the stress and financial burden of our student loans.

We understand that our own poor financial decisions are the reason we are in such significant debt, but are still hoping to find some support and debt relief through our GoFundMe page. Any amount would help us!

Thank you so much!

In my opinion blood test is more accurate than a breath test. There are circumstances where a breath test can have erroneously high readings. For example, an erroneously high readings can occur in people with acid reflux. If you belch close to the time you take the test, you'll have a breath with an artificially high concentration of alcohol. In addition, breath testing machines operates under a scientific assumption that not all scientists agree with. On the other hand, blood testing is done with an instrument called gas chromatograph. This is an extremely accurate and standard instrument that's been used in chemistry for years.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local volunteers travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with Congress about climate policy.

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 10-13, 2023 — Climate-concerned citizens from Boulder, Colorado will travel to Washington, D.C., this month to talk to Congressional leaders about policy that will reduce carbon pollution.

On Tuesday, June 13, representatives from the Boulder, Colorado chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) will join volunteers from across the U.S. to advocate for climate solutions.

During their day on Capitol Hill, Boulder, Colorado will meet with the offices of Rep. Joe Neguse, Senator Bennet, and Senator Hickenlooper, volunteers will attend CCL’s international 2023 Climate Lobbying Reboot June Conference, where they will hear from inspirational speakers such as Dream.org Green for All National Campaign Director Jameka Hodnett, Dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University Rachel Kyte and Ambassador Francis Rooney who was the Republican representative for Florida’s 19th Congressional district from 2017 to 2021.

“I first lobbied in November 2019 when I began to feel that the federal government really needed to hear more from citizens on the importance of effective climate change legislation. I'm headed back to DC this year because while some important progress has been made since 2019, Congress still needs to hear that we need more action on climate to meet our Paris Climate Accord commitments." said Aron Hoffman from the Boulder, Colorado CCL chapter.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that brings together volunteers from across the political spectrum to advocate for legislation to help solve the climate crisis. Volunteers meet regularly with their members of Congress to ask them to support federal policy to lower the heat-trapping emissions altering and polluting our climate.

Rep. Joe Neuse recently introduced the SOLAR Edge Act, a bill works to incentivize residential solar installation and long-term job growth in the solar industry. “CCL volunteers from both sides of the aisle consistently contact Rep Joe

Neguse, Senator Bennett, and Senator Hickenlooper to ask for climate action,” said David Kline, a group leader with the Boulder, Colorado CCL chapter. “Our state already sees impacts from a warming climate: we have had severe drought. Our leaders must support policy to reduce carbon emissions with the speed needed.”

Although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported an increase in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in 2022,

a clean energy transition is swiftly happening in the U.S.

Just three months after the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, 100,000 climate-friendly jobs were created in the U.S., and families that take advantage of clean energy and electric vehicle tax credits from the bill are set to save more than $1,000 per year.

Democratic Gov. Jared Polis signed a series of bills that allocate as much as $120 million in state tax credits for heat pumps, electric vehicles, and even electric lawn equipment, like lawn mowers and leaf blowers.

“We are heading in the right direction,” said David Kline. “But it’s important we push for more.”

DENVER (May 24, 2023) - Registration is now live for Judaism Your Way’s 2023-2024 Open Tent Be Mitzvah cohort program. The two-year cohort experience prepares students for a distinctive, meaningful, and personally curated Be Mitzvah ceremony that focuses on helping youth in Boulder, Central Denver and South Denver discover their individual identity within a Jewish context. The ceremony is a springboard into how they want to live as Jewish adults taking on more responsibility for themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Discounted early-bird registration closes on Thursday, June 15th. Registration will remain open through mid-summer or until classes are full, space is limited.

With the understanding that words matter, Judaism Your Way intentionally uses “Be” rather than the gender-based Bar and Bat to honor gender inclusivity. Throughout the program, students are led through Jewish teachings to develop their spiritual toolkit. In the first year of the cohort program, this includes classes on Jewish cuisine, art, outdoor activities, and a parent-only class that assists parents in supporting their children through their spiritual maturation. At the end of year one, students follow the path of learning that feels most authentic to their core values and personal connection to the Jewish faith. In the second year of the cohort program, rather than a rigid curriculum that centers on conformity, the Open Tent Be Mitzvah program encourages students to craft their own service. The program culminates in a self-designed Be Mitzvah ceremony, marking their transition to adulthood, which can be held in any location.

“Judaism Your Way was founded over twenty years ago by an interfaith couple, Don and Sue Sturm, who were seeking a more inclusive approach to Judaism. Our name guides our organization, and the Be Mitzvah program is no exception. We teach our students about the many ways of being Jewish, to empower them to find a way that is meaningful to them. Since that time, we’ve facilitated hundreds of Be Mitzvah ceremonies that we pride ourselves on for their inclusivity, and we look forward to welcoming in the next cohort,” said Rabbi Amanda Schwartz, Family Life Director at Judaism Your Way.

The organization’s recent expansion to South Denver opens the in-person programming to a new audience of applicants.

For more information and to register for the program, please visit www.judaismyourway.org/open-tent-be-mitzvah,

It is well-known that physical therapy is heavily utilized for rehabilitation purposes, following an illness, injury, or surgery, but did you know physical therapy can be helpful for a wide range of conditions that even include headaches and incontinence? Physical therapy is arguably one of the most beneficial and least invasive ways to heal or improve a large variety of conditions and injuries. This amazing field of medicine provides an extensive range of benefits. Foremostly, it seeks to identify the why behind problematic symptom(s) for a holistic approach to healing. Read on to learn more about physical therapy and how it can benefit you!

What Is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a form of healthcare that focuses on restoring movement and function to the body. It is often used to treat musculoskeletal injuries, such as sprains, strains, and fractures. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to help patients recover from injury or illness. These techniques may include connective tissue mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, functional trigger point dry needling, intramuscular manual therapy, visceral manipulation, joint mobilization, surface EMG, biofeedback, core stabilization, strengthening exercises, manual therapy, and massage, as well as therapeutic modalities like ultrasound, cupping, Gua Sha, electrical stimulation, cold laser therapy, and iontophoresis. A specialized treatment plan that includes a combination of one or several of the above methods of treatment will be developed to assist each patient with their unique problem, to heal the underlying issue and alleviate symptoms.

What Types of Conditions and Injuries Can Benefit from Physical Therapy?

When it comes to physical therapy, it can be used to treat standard back pain, restore function following an injury or surgery, or used to treat jaw pain, incontinence, and everything in between. Some of the conditions that are effectively treated by physical therapy are listed below: (This is not an all-inclusive list of potential conditions that can benefit from the expertise of a physical therapist.)

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Neurological disorders
  • Balance issues
  • Incontinence
  • Headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ pain

Additionally, many physical therapy practices are now offering specialized treatment to women during the postnatal and prenatal period. They often provide golf physical therapy and pediatric physical therapy as well. Thus, while physical therapy, at one time, was used in a more limited capacity, today the sky is the limit. Physical therapy has quickly become the default option for healing to avoid more invasive treatments. When used correctly, it can often prevent the need for surgical intervention.

How Can Physical Therapy Help?

Physical therapy can help in a variety of ways. It can be used to reduce pain, improve mobility, restore function, and prevent further injury. Physical therapists use a combination of manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercises, as well as patient education and a home exercise plan to help patients reach their goals. Manual therapy techniques are used to reduce pain and improve joint mobility, while therapeutic exercises are used to strengthen muscles, improve balance, and increase flexibility. Ultimately, physical therapy can help you get your life back!

Understanding The Benefits of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy offers a wide range of benefits for those suffering from an injury or illness. Here are some of the most common benefits:

  • Pain relief: Physical therapy can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with an injury or illness. It can also help reduce inflammation and swelling, which can lead to further pain relief.
  • Improved mobility: Physical therapy can help improve range of motion, flexibility, and strength. This can help you move more freely and with less pain, so you can get back to doing the things you love.
  • Prevent injuries: Physical therapy can help improve balance and coordination, as well as strengthen muscles and joints which can reduce the risk of future falls or other accidents, protecting you from injury.
  • Improved quality of life: Physical therapy can help improve overall quality of life by helping you move more freely, with less pain. Furthermore, it can help alleviate the often-embarrassing symptoms of incontinence.
  • Mitigate the need for surgery: Physical therapy can often lead to the remediation of symptoms and the healing of chronic pain, mobility issues, and muscle weakness that commonly causes the onset of conditions like incontinence. Since physical therapy addresses the underlying cause to lend complete healing rather covering up the symptoms, it can often be used in lieu of surgical interventions and medications.
  • Improved posture: Physical therapy can help improve posture by strengthening the muscles that support the spine and joints. This can reduce pain and discomfort associated with poor posture.
  • Improved mental health: Physical therapy can also help improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety associated with an injury or illness.
  • Improved sleep: Physical therapy can help improve sleep quality by reducing pain and improving mobility.
  • Improved sports performance: Physical therapy can help improve sports performance by increasing strength, power, and endurance. You can take your golf game to the next level with the improved range of motion offered by golf physical therapy.
  • Avoid Opioid dependence: Far too often, when a patient is dealing with chronic pain, the first line of treatment is prescribing pain killers. Not only do drugs merely mask the symptoms of a deeper problem, but they also come with a host of unpleasant and concerning side effects. In the case of opioids, patients risk being dependent or addicted to the medication. With the right physical therapy plan, it is often possible to identify and heal the underlying problem causing the chronic pain, so you can say goodbye to dependance upon dangerous pain medications.
  • Get rid of chronic migraines and tension headaches: Physical therapy can help reduce the frequency and intensity of chronic migraines and tension headaches. It can also help improve posture, which can reduce the strain on neck muscles that often lead to these types of headaches.

Overall, physical therapy can be a great way to help improve your health and your quality of life. It can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and even prevent future injuries. Physical therapists use a combination of manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercises to help you reach your goals. If you’re suffering from an injury or illness, it’s worth considering physical therapy as the first line of treatment! After all, it might just restore your quality of life and save you the pain, expense, and hassle of surgery!

Why Is Family Medicine Important?

31040799878?profile=originalThe reality of life is that everyone will get sick or injured at some point. When this occurs, the need for a trusted physician is often recognized. However, many people fail to invest in healthcare until something goes wrong. Having a regular family physician is an important part of maintaining your health and wellness, and can also make the process of receiving care when you are already sick or injured, easier and more efficient. Continue reading to learn more about why you should consider finding a regular family physician to manage your health!

What Is a Family Physician?

A family physician is a doctor who has completed medical school and residency training specifically geared toward caring for patients and their family’s routine medical needs. These doctors have the knowledge and skills needed to diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries, as well as perform preventative measures. They are able to provide primary care services such as physical exams, vaccinations, lab tests, treatments, and referrals. In addition, they may be able to coordinate other specialists’ visits and procedures for you.

Often, family physicians work closely with other members of the healthcare team including nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists, chiropractors, and others. This allows them to provide comprehensive care by combining all aspects of patient health and wellness into one location.

Who Should Have One?

Everyone can benefit from having a family physician. You do not necessarily need to live in a certain area to receive quality care. The key thing to remember is that you want someone who cares about your overall health and wellness. If you feel like your current doctor does not meet these criteria, it might be time to find another provider.

If you are looking for a new family physician, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Find a doctor who takes your insurance plan. It is important to choose a doctor who accepts your insurance so that you do not have to pay out-of-pocket expenses for routine appointments.
  • Choose a doctor who listens to you. Make sure that he or she asks questions and truly wants to understand what you are experiencing.
  • Look for a doctor who offers convenient office locations. Some offices offer online scheduling which makes it easy to schedule appointments without squandering precious time on the phone.
  • Ask if the doctor has experience treating conditions similar or identical to yours. For example, if you suffer from allergies, ask if the doctor has treated people with similar issues before.
  • Find out whether the doctor is accepting new patients.
  • Check references. Ask friends and relatives if they would recommend the doctor.

How Can I Find a New Family Doctor?

It is possible to find a new family physician through word of mouth or online resources. Many websites allow you to search for local family physicians based on your zip code.

You can also check with your insurance company, to select a physician. They will be able to advise you on what family doctors participate with your insurance plan, which doctors are accepting new patients, as well as the address and phone number of eligible providers.

In addition, you can use the internet to look up information about various family physicians in your area. There are several sites that list family physicians, including Healthgrades.com and US News & World Report.

The Office Has Both Doctors and Physician's Assistants-What's The Difference?

There are two main differences between having a doctor versus a PA: the level of education required, and the type of services provided. To obtain a license to practice medicine, a doctor must first graduate from medical school. He or she then completes three years of residency training, during which time he or she learns how to diagnose and treat illness. After completing their residency, doctors must pass board exams to become certified. Doctors are usually more experienced than PAs and can treat more complex cases. However, PAs are sometimes better suited for certain types of treatment.

Conversely, becoming a PA requires less education. Although students learn how to perform basic medical tasks, such as taking vital signs and administering injections. Students also learn how to communicate effectively with patients. Most programs include some form of clinical rotations, where students shadow physicians and observe surgeries.

PAs are typically employed by private practices or hospital outpatient departments. Some PAs work in group settings, such as primary care centers. Others may work in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. In these settings, they work closely with physicians and other health professionals to diagnose illnesses, order and interpret lab tests, and perform simple procedures such as suturing and splinting. They can also prescribe medications.

Often family doctors work directly with a PA, so they are able to offer more appointments and more efficient care for their patients. For example, while you may see your regular physician for a yearly physical or serious health problem if you call for a sick appointment due to a sinus infection, it is likely you will see the corresponding PA, instead of your family doctor. Simply put, both doctors and PAs are an integral part of comprehensive medical care.

I'm Healthy-Do I Still Need a Family Doctor?

Yes! Even though you may feel healthy, you still need a family doctor. Your family doctor can help monitor your overall health and make sure you're getting all the preventive screenings and vaccinations you should have. When you go to the doctor, you'll want to discuss any changes in your lifestyle, diet, exercise routine, or weight.

Scheduling an annual physical with your family doctor is important to monitor your health and wellness. Regular visits can help detect any potential medical conditions early so that you can receive more effective treatment. If you notice anything unusual, be sure to tell your doctor right away. It could save you from developing a life-threatening condition.

Far too many people avoid the doctor until a problem has developed. Invest in your well-being today by finding a family doctor you trust. The next time you are sick, you will be glad to have a health professional on your side. You only get one body, and one life; regular medical care is one of the best ways to ensure you stay healthy so you can get the most out of your life!

Longmont Student Awarded $10,000 College Grant Through Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship Program
Funding will support tuition and other school fees; applications now open for the 2023 program

Boulder, Colo. – Jan. 12, 2023 – Recognizing the significant financial burden families shoulder when undergoing childhood cancer treatments, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation is dedicating $500,000 in grants to help fund tuition and other school fees for childhood cancer survivors and siblings of those affected by childhood cancer through its annual Childhood Cancer Survivor and Sibling Scholarship Programs. Local Longmont resident Julianne Johnston has been recognized as one of the company’s 2022 Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship recipients, receiving a $5,000 renewable scholarship (for a total of $10,000).

“Childhood cancer robs children and their families of far too much, and that should not include the opportunity to pursue their dreams of a college degree,” said Steve Radke, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “We are proud to help these brave children start the next chapter of their lives, as well as recognize and honor the challenges siblings endure.”

During Julianne’s battle with cancer, she found a light in Make-A-Wish Colorado and has been passionate about giving back to her community ever since. After her first year in high school, Julianne raised more than $1,000 for her school’s Make-A-Wish Colorado fundraiser and has continued to raise money for the nonprofit ever since. Currently a freshman at Morningside College, Julianne is majoring in music education with hopes of being a high school band director.

“Not only does music make me happy, but it finds me at my darkest moments and brings me to the light,” said Julianne Johnston. “My service will always be heavily influenced by my cancer diagnosis as I see that time in my life as a jumping off point. Through my career and philanthropy efforts, I will be motivated by the kindness shown to me with Northwestern Mutual’s scholarship and during my cancer journey.”

Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Scholarship Program was created to help alleviate another major expense facing families affected by childhood cancer – the cost of a college education. To date, the company has supported more than 210 scholars and contributed nearly $1.5 million through its Childhood Cancer Scholarship Program. The program is administered through Scholarship America, an organization dedicated to developing scholarship solutions for student success.

Applications for the 2023 scholarship program are open now through Feb.1, 2023. To learn more and apply, visit:

Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Program is committed to accelerating the search for better treatments and cures for childhood cancer, while also supporting families undergoing treatment and survivors struggling with lasting effects. Since 2012, the company has contributed

more than $45 million to the cause and funded more than 520,000 hours of research. To learn more about Northwestern Mutual’s continued efforts in the fight against childhood cancer, visit its Foundation’s website here.

We need your support to raise $20,000 by the end of December to ensure Felix and his friends continue to receive critical medications and warm bedding this winter.
