Luvin Arms Tours are so popular, we added not just one but two new tours this summer: Friday noontime Connect tours and Spanish-speaking tours!

A tour of Erie-based Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary is much more than a fun day spent getting to know our amazing family of rescued animals. In fact, it is nearly impossible to leave without developing a deeper understanding of the unique personalities and complex emotional lives that all animals lead.

On the Connect Tour, you will get to meet a select number of our residents on this family-friendly one-hour tour. As you listen to the inspiring stories of our residents, you will get to connect and cuddle with them as individuals. You will also get to sample delicious plant-based foods at the end of the tour.

Please consider not attending if you don’t feel well, or have any symptoms of a fever or cold.

NEWS RELEASE

Luvin Arms’ First-Ever Compassion Carnival is Coming to Town!

For Immediate Release: June 6, 2022

Erie, Colorado - Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary is holding its first ever compassion-based carnival on July 9th, an alternative to the rodeo.

The rodeo has been a summer-time American institution for decades. Many of us have our own childhood memories of the rodeo. And yet, today there are many other forms of family-friendly entertainment that don’t involve harming baby calves to the point of serious injury and even death. Calf roping, featured prominently at all rodeos, is plain abuse. These baby calves just want to snuggle with their mothers - and instead they are chased, roped, hog-tied and dragged through the dirt. This old practice is cruel - we know better now.

Children are attracted to the rodeo because they have a natural affinity towards animals. Children crave connection to animals, and desire the opportunity to be close to farmed animals. Yet, the rodeo teaches children how to use animals for profit, and corrodes their natural empathy towards animals.

Luvin Arms is providing the answer to creating fun family memories centered around the true joy of connecting with animals, without becoming desensitized to the needs and feelings of other beings.

The Luvin Arms Compassion Carnival will include fun rides and games, and food trucks offering delicious cruelty-free refreshments. Participants will have the unique opportunity to meet and cuddle with Luvin Arms’ four young cow-girls who are all survivors of the abuses of the dairy industry.

“Entertainment is a huge part of all of our lives. Let us engage in activities that are kind to all beings, and do not cause suffering for the sake of our entertainment,” said Emma Schwarz, the Sanctuary’s Director of Advancement in Ahimsa. “All beings want to be safe, play, and have fun. At the Luvin Arms Carnival, we can have fun and play with ALL species!”

The Luvin Arms Compassion Carnival will be a critical and powerful tool in accomplishing the Sanctuary’s mission of connecting communities to farmed animals, fostering the growth of everlasting compassionate hearts, and encouraging people of all ages to make choices rooted in Ahimsa - nonviolence toward all living beings.

NEWS RELEASE: Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary Invites the Public to Its First-Ever Farmed Animal Enrichment Day

For Immediate Release:

August 2, 2022

Erie, Colorado – Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary will host an inspiring and educational Farmed Animal Enrichment Day on August 27, 2022.

The Sanctuary invites the community to participate in this special behind-the-scenes look at how the humans and nonhumans of Luvin Arms speak a common language.

Many in the community are familiar with positive reinforcement clicker training as a popular technique that pet parents use to reward the behavior of their canine companions.

Luvin Arms established its own clicker play program in 2021, developing Individual Enrichment Plans for each of its farmed animal residents. Just like dogs, each species at Luvin Arms - from chickens to cows to sheep - easily learns clicker play skills! The Luvin Arms clicker play program introduces skills that are fun and engaging for the residents, providing them with agency to engage in their daily cooperative care needs. This also builds trusting relationships between the residents and their partners, and teaches the residents skills that come in handy for situations like haltering and boarding a trailer for a trip to the vet.

The Luvin Arms Enrichment Day will include an informative talk by Behavior Consultant, Janna Dewey of Behavior Vets Colorado.

Janna will discuss:
*how to apply positive reinforcement to different species
*the science of behavior change
*how enrichment positively impacts animals
*ideas for enrichment activities
*where to start when experiencing behavioral problems

The day will also include clicker play demonstrations between several of the Luvin Arms animal residents and their volunteer enrichment partners, as well as creating environmental enrichment toys for the residents.

“By learning about clicker play - how it enriches the lives of our residents - and viewing clicker play demonstrations, visitors will begin to relate to the residents in similar ways they relate to their own pets at home,” said Robert Heyer, Enrichment Coordinator at Luvin Arms.

Luvin Arms Hosts Refugees for a Day of Service and Refuge

March 10, 2022 – Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary is collaborating with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) this month for a day of contemplative service work in honor of both female refugees and the animal residents of Luvin Arms.

The IRC is one of three resettlement agencies in the Denver area for refugees, asylum seekers, and special immigrant visa holders. Their women’s support group, We Can Do It!, is an adjustment and acculturation program that uses different tools and mediums for stress relief, trauma processing, and community building. Women from different nationalities and backgrounds come together every week to support each other, practice English, and explore new skills. Despite language barriers and hardship, this model has proven to be a successful instrument for bringing people together, providing a safe space for expression, and fostering wellbeing and creative empowerment.

During this program year, the IRC community is using outdoors activities as a medium for holistic wellness while exploring the beautiful Colorado landscape, and benefiting from the wonderful peace obtained through connection to nature. They offer various activities such as biking, hiking, nature art creation, group activities, volleyball, slacklines walking, and others. In addition, calmer connecting activities are also offered in nature: sitting meditation, walking meditation, breathing exercises, connection with animals, and relaxation.

Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary will be providing the female refugees with ample opportunities to connect with the animal residents of Luvin Arms in March. Cuddling with animals can alleviate stress, provide a sense of peace during difficult times, and transcend any language barrier. The day will be mutually beneficial for both the female refugees and the Luvin Arms’ residents, underscoring the Sanctuary’s mission of Ahimsa - nonviolence towards all living beings - something both of these groups desire and deserve.

Luvin Arms is a nonprofit animal sanctuary for abused and neglected farmed animals, based in Erie, Colorado. Luvin Arms is working to provide exceptional lifelong social, emotional, and cognitive care for their animal residents, and to advocate for those who have not been rescued by sharing their residents’ stories to inspire, educate, and empower others to embrace a more compassionate and sustainable lifestyle.

The IRC helps people affected by humanitarian crises - including the climate crisis - to survive, recover, and rebuild their lives. Founded at the call of Albert Einstein in 1933, the IRC is now at work in over 40 crisis-affected countries, as well as communities throughout Europe and the Americas. The IRC delivers lasting impact by providing health care, helping children learn, and empowering individuals and communities to become self-reliant, always seeking to address the inequalities facing women and girls.

The Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Club welcomed two new puppies from Guide Dogs for the Blind on Friday, January 13, 2012. Athena is a 14-month old, female, golden retriever and Bonita is an 11-week old black Labrador. They are destined to become partners  for people who are blind.

Athena is being raised by Cathy Greenwald and Bonita is being raised by Gwen Nicodemus and her daughter, Anna. Normally, puppies travel by the puppy truck, but these two pups were special and flew to Colorado.

Cathy is a leader in the Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Club and has raised about one puppy a year for the last 13 years. Gwen has raised three puppies and her daughter Anna has raised one.

The Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Club currently has 17 puppies in the club and 2 in "college" training to be working guides.

The puppies are born at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California. Most puppies come into their raiser's home at about 8-9 weeks of age. They embark on a journey to meet their new puppy raising families, who raise them for the next 12-18 months.  The puppy raisers teach the dogs house manners and socialize them to the world by introducing them to new people, places, and experiences.

Raisers then return their dogs to Guide Dogs for the Blind for several months of formal training. The Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Club currently has two dogs, Kia and Patrice, both female, black Labradors, in formal training. The dogs are then matched with blind students enrolled in the in-residence training.  Raisers are invited to formally present the dog they have raised to its new partner in a public graduation ceremony.

Guide Dogs for the Blind has created life-long partnerships to people throughout the United States and Canada since 1942. Services are provided free-of-charge. The organization receives no government funding but relies solely on private donations.

For more information about the Boulder Guide Dog Puppy Club, club meeting dates, and contact informatno, please check out our website at BoulderPuppies.org.
