The Winter Cold is Here!

Clean and comfortable bedding is essential to the health and longevity of our residents at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary. But bedding is incredibly expensive.

For residents like Felix the rescued pig, elderly medical care is an essential part of our routine. When farmed animals reach an elderly age, they experience many of the same health challenges as humans.

We need your support to raise $20,000 by the end of December to ensure Felix and his friends continue to receive critical medications and warm bedding this winter.

NEWS RELEASE: Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary Invites the Public to Its First-Ever Farmed Animal Enrichment Day

For Immediate Release:

August 2, 2022

Erie, Colorado – Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary will host an inspiring and educational Farmed Animal Enrichment Day on August 27, 2022.

The Sanctuary invites the community to participate in this special behind-the-scenes look at how the humans and nonhumans of Luvin Arms speak a common language.

Many in the community are familiar with positive reinforcement clicker training as a popular technique that pet parents use to reward the behavior of their canine companions.

Luvin Arms established its own clicker play program in 2021, developing Individual Enrichment Plans for each of its farmed animal residents. Just like dogs, each species at Luvin Arms - from chickens to cows to sheep - easily learns clicker play skills! The Luvin Arms clicker play program introduces skills that are fun and engaging for the residents, providing them with agency to engage in their daily cooperative care needs. This also builds trusting relationships between the residents and their partners, and teaches the residents skills that come in handy for situations like haltering and boarding a trailer for a trip to the vet.

The Luvin Arms Enrichment Day will include an informative talk by Behavior Consultant, Janna Dewey of Behavior Vets Colorado.

Janna will discuss:
*how to apply positive reinforcement to different species
*the science of behavior change
*how enrichment positively impacts animals
*ideas for enrichment activities
*where to start when experiencing behavioral problems

The day will also include clicker play demonstrations between several of the Luvin Arms animal residents and their volunteer enrichment partners, as well as creating environmental enrichment toys for the residents.

“By learning about clicker play - how it enriches the lives of our residents - and viewing clicker play demonstrations, visitors will begin to relate to the residents in similar ways they relate to their own pets at home,” said Robert Heyer, Enrichment Coordinator at Luvin Arms.

For Immediate Release: April 12, 2022

Erie, CO – In light of the devastating Avian Flu H5N1 that has resulted in the extermination of 25 million birds and counting, Luvin Arms’ Chef Donna Marino will hold a special public cooking class on Saturday, April 30th. The class will feature chicken and egg alternatives with delicious vegan wine pairings. Samples of many of the plant-based options on the market will be available for in-person tastings. Enjoy a beautiful spring evening connecting with animal residents and learning plant-based cooking at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary!

Since its founding in 2015, Luvin Arms has provided world-class humane education programming that benefits people, animals, and the environment.

Luvin Arms’ humane education program accomplishes their mission of Ahimsa - nonviolence toward all living beings by connecting communities to farmed animals, fostering the growth of everlasting compassionate hearts, and encouraging people of all ages to make choices rooted in empathy and sustainability.

Current Sanctuary humane education opportunities include films, public tours, speaker talks, school field trips, and plant-based cooking demonstrations.

“Avian Flus are a threat to our food system. The way our society breeds and confines birds has the potential to develop and spread virulent disease. It’s so important to learn alternatives to chicken and egg consumption so that we don’t perpetuate this deadly system.” – Emma Schwarz, Director of Advancement in Ahimsa, Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary.

Wolf Rescued from Pipe

Teamwork credited with wolf rescue. On the side of a steep slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, rescuers worked to successfully free a wolf with its head trapped in a heavy steep pipe. Members of the Boulder Emergency Squad, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder County Parks and Open Space, and Boulder County Sheriff's Department Animal Control responded and rescued the wolf with the help of a local veterinarian. (Boulder, Colorado). January 27, 2010 -- Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. along with other agencies, rescued a wolf which had gotten its head stuck in a steel pipe. With medical care provided by a veterinarian, the pipe was carefully cut from around the animals head. The several hour ordeal left the wolf "...in fine condition with only some minor cuts & scrapes", according to Veterinarian Dr. Christopher Blum, VMD of Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic in Golden, Colorado. While playing, the wolf-hybrid had gotten her head stuck in a 6 inch diameter, half-inch thick, eight foot long steel pipe and had evidently been unseen for a few hours. Coal Creek Fire cut the pipe to about one foot long which made the wolf and pipe portable. But, the head was still stuck and the animal was obviously stressed. The problem was metal welded inside the pipe was trapping the wolf's head. "From the moment the wolf was brought to the clinic until it was freed, all of us melded together into a cohesive team, that made the difference", said Blum. The animal control officer agrees. "Without the assistance of Deputy Bryarly, Officer Spensieri, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder Emergency Squad and Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic, this wolf would have died, no question," said Brandy J. Perkins, Animal Control Officer at Boulder County. The scene was on the side of a steep hill on property where a local homeowner raises wolf-hybrids. With the need for sedation. dark approaching and far from an ideal location, the wolf was transported 20 miles to a clinic, its head still stuck in the very heavy chunk of pipe.

After a quick check by the doctor, it was apparent that the wolf was dehydrated and stressed. IVs were started and vital signs monitored as the team set up outside in the parking lot with the BES emergency lighting. The 'patient' was monitored as the rescuers used a side grinder to slowly cut away enough of the metal to get the head out. "The 'operation' was a success", said Chief Andrew Moschetti after the wolf was cleared from the metal pipe. "I am so thankful to everyone who assisted in this rescue. It is so nice to know that BES is always there when we ask for them. They [B.E.S.] provide the equipment and support we need without ever questioning it's for an "animal". These [rescuers] are great and deserve to be recognized for all the good they do!" said Perkins. * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * About Boulder Emergency Squad: B.E.S. is an all volunteer, non-profit 501c.3 technical rescue team serving the County of Boulder, Colorado.
