Larry H. Miller Dealerships is again joining forces with Denver’s 9NEWS and the Volunteers of America Colorado Branch (VOA) to support the 16th annual “Stuff for Students” school supply drive. Donations collected throughout the month of August will be distributed to more than 15 Colorado school districts, including Boulder Valley & St. Vrain, and will  benefit students from pre-kindergarten to high school based on need.

“We want Colorado students to start the school year off right and with the tools necessary for them to succeed,” said Ray Reilly, senior vice president of operations, Larry H. Miller Dealerships. “Giving back in the communities where we do business has always been a guiding principle of Larry H. Miller Dealerships, and we’re excited to continue our support of the ‘Stuff for Students’ campaign for a third year.”

Throughout the month of August, Larry H. Miller dealership locations – with the help of customers and employees – will stuff a car, truck or SUV in each of their showrooms with much-needed supplies including backpacks, pencil boxes, highlighters, scissors, binders, book covers, calculators and lunch bags. “Stuff for Students” collection bins will be located at Larry H. Miller dealership locations across Denver, including Lakewood, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Thornton, Federal Heights and Aurora, and in Boulder. In addition, monetary donations can be made online through the VOA at http://www.voacolorado.org/news_and_events/stuff-for-students.

The cost of basic school supplies continues to increase, and parents can spend upwards of $900 on supplies for a high school-aged student. Approximately 23 percent of the 743,255 students in the counties served by the VOA are living in poverty, compared to the state average of 14.7 percent. In addition, Colorado school districts identified nearly 25,000 students statewide who were experiencing homelessness.

“There is still a concerning number of children living in poverty in Colorado and school funding is not sufficient enough to help with other needs like school supplies,” said Bradley Gulley, director of volunteer programs, Volunteers of America Colorado Branch. “Thanks to donations from Larry H. Miller dealerships and their customers, we will be able to provide more students with the school supplies they need to be successful in the classroom. These contributions will make a real difference in the communities we serve.”

Since 2015, it is estimated that more than $26,000 in school supplies have been donated by employees and customers of Larry H. Miller Dealerships to benefit local students throughout the state who are in low-income households or suffering from homelessness. In addition to participating in “Stuff for Students,” Larry H. Miller Charities, has donated more than $600,000 to support qualified nonprofit organizations throughout Colorado since 1997.

A limited-edition print by popular culture icon and artist Peter Max will be one of the featured pieces in the sale. For more information on how to shop this sale for the newest addition to your collection, contact TRU Community Care’s Office of Philanthropic Services at 303.604.5358.

Volunteers at the TRU Hospice Thrift Shop work to identify items for eBay that attract a higher price than items in the shop. Dan Gleeson, former art teacher at Boulder High School observes, “We are amazed at the quality of the items donated to benefit the work of TRU Hospice. I’m so excited to pull together a collection for sale at Mary Williams Fine Arts—it will be a great opportunity for us.”

TRU Hospice Thrift Shop opened in 2005 to offer a depository for estate items to help families who have lost a loved one. When families feel burdened by possessions, it’s a gift to have TRU Hospice help find a new home for the furniture and household goods. Collectibles, books, furniture, art, and sporting goods, among other contributions, are accepted daily at the shop in east Boulder.

TRU Hospice Thrift Shop seeks volunteers for 4-hour shifts each week. More than 100 volunteers offer their services to the shop and find a great sense of community in the work. Carol Thompson, Volunteer Coordinator adds, “We are a warm, friendly place to give back to our community and have fun at the same time.” Call Carol at 303.605.5353 to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) Cavalcade made an appearance at the annual Boulder Creek Festival over Memorial Day weekend.

Volunteer ministers offered their standard “nerve assists” to the crowd, an “action undertaken to help a person confront physical difficulties,” according to the book by L. Ron Hubbard, Assists for Illness and Injuries (one of the many VM booklets that outline solutions for everyday living.)

From handling aching feet and backs to helping people of other religions find workable ways to understand their sacred scriptures more effectively, festival goers learned that a Scientology Volunteer Minister truly has tools so that “Something Can Be Done About It,” the slogan of the VM corps.

A young civil engineer from India found many points in the VM handbooks that aligned with his religion.  Another young man said that he had “done a lot of personal growth and that is life was good, but he would like to be a bit better in social situations.”  The Volunteer Minister showed him how something called the “Tone Scale,” could help him understand where people were coming from and how to communicate with them more effectively.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers with their bright yellow shirts underneath tents of the same color have helped at major disaster areas around the world including 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti earthquake and countless others. The idea behind the VM corps is to “bring conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into [society] trust, decency, honesty, and tolerance.”

31040789295?profile=originaldechen%20hawk%20promo%20pic.jpgJohn StatzPamela MachalaBOULDER IN-THE-ROUND SHOWCASES SINGER-SONGWRITERS At eTOWN HALL

If you’re of a certain age in Boulder, chances are you don’t go out to hear live music much anymore, because you don’t want to go to a STO venue (that’s Standing Room Only) where the music doesn’t get started until 10 p.m.  And many don’t want to go to a show where the crowd is actually louder than the music on stage.  For that crowd—and any true lovers of original music—there’s now Boulder in-the-Round at eTown Hall on the first Wednesday evening of every month.

Boulder in-the-Round is a singer-songwriter showcase, featuring four different singer songwriters every month.  If you’re over 50, you’ll love the fact it starts at 7 p.m. and you’re out the door by 9:30 p.m. Not bad for a school night.  It beats another night on the sofa.  And what a showcase it is.

Four artists take turns playing one of their original songs, often sharing the story behind it, not unlike the famed Bluebird in Nashville.  And while these local, regional and national artists haven’t had a song on the top 20 charts yet, once you hear them, you’ll know it’s just a matter of time before they DO chart.

Boulder in-the-Round was birthed by local singer-songwriters Theresa Peterson, Hunter Stone and Wilson Harwood, although Peterson and Stone are now the “curators.”

“We all met while doing various Open Mics around town, and started talking about putting a songwriter night together; some kind of roundtable platform,” said Peterson.  “We started at Hunter’s house, and then connected with the folks at Vapor Distillery in East Boulder, where we performed for two years. They were so supportive of what we were trying to do.”

Ultimately a friend connected Peterson with eTown Hall Facility Director John “Digger” Pelaez. eTown is the nationally syndicated radio show that features live performances and is hosted by Nick and Helen Forster.  The rest, as they say, is history.

“eTown is the ideal venue for musical performances such as these,” said Peterson.  Every month eTown graciously provides the space, a sound engineer, volunteers and even bartenders. While Boulder in-the-Round currently takes place downstairs at eTown Hall, Peterson hopes to grow the monthly event into the big performance hall one day.

If you haven’t had the chance to be in a true “listening” venue, you’ll want to download your free—yes, free—tickets to Boulder in-the-Round. The four singer songwriters that are performing on Wednesday, June 7 are diverse, as they always are. You’ll hear from Dechen Hawk, a Boulder songwriter with neo-soul style.  Heatherlyn is a nationally touring songstress offering pure, soaring vocals and songs that radiate love.  John Statz, who recently returned from an international tour and is releasing a new record in June, brings poignant lyrics and a classic folk sound. Pamela Machala delivers fun, smart and heartfelt indi pop.

Peterson will be on hand as the evening’s “curator,” and a local artist is always on hand, painting to the inspiration of the music.  The artwork is usually for sale or raffled off.  While the tickets to Boulder in-the-Round are free, if you attend, you’ll need to fill the tip jar, as that’s how the artists get paid.  And after you experience the show, you’ll want to stuff that jar to the brim. The talent is that good, the listening room environment is that unique and the venue is ideal.  Plus, it’s not every day you look around a concert or performance of any kind that attracts a mix of 20 somethings, 30 somethings and even 60 and 70 somethings, all enjoying the same music in the exact same way—respectfully, quietly and appreciatively.

“If you enjoy live music, if you appreciate hearing songs as they are born and the backstories behind them, if you appreciate artistry and value a true listening environment, you need to come experience Boulder in-the-Round,” said Peterson.

For free tickets, visit www.etown.org.  You can also check out Boulder-in-the Round on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

Test case integrates R&D, OEMs, contractors and subs to efficiently employ AM processes, expand markets and increase resiliency

Golden, CO –ADAPT, the Alliance for the Development of Additive Processing Technologies, a research consortium focused on developing technologies to accelerate the certification and qualification of 3D printed metal parts, in cooperation with the University of Utah, has received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense for the first phase of the Mountain West Advanced Manufacturer’s Network (MWAMN). From the approximately $2.7 million in funding, roughly $1.5 million will go to Colorado School of Mines and ADAPT.

“This program creates a new manufacturing platform to advance economic and workforce resilience in response to changes in defense spending,” said ADAPT Technical Director Aaron Stebner. “Enabling manufacturers to efficiently deploy additive manufacturing processes helps diversify their product offerings, expand into non-defense markets, and provide resilient employment and value to their communities and the economy independent of defense spending.”

The MWAMN leverages ADAPT’s existing data infrastructure built with funding from a State of Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade Advanced Industries Accelerator grant and funds from founding member companies. This data infrastructure will help inform product and material change-overs; create new innovations and diversification; accelerate product development; and reduce reliance on the defense industry while improving the ability respond to new Department of Defense requirements.

Other network members include Citrine Informatics; Carnegie Mellon’s NextManufacturing Center; and the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership organizations from Colorado and Utah, Manufacturer’s Edge and the MEP Center at The University of Utah.

“Additive manufacturing holds the promise of enabling manufacturers to quickly adapt to changing market needs compared to traditional manufacturing methods,” noted Heidi Hostetter, ADAPT industry board chair. “Today, building new parts or switching materials with this technology takes too long. MWAMN is focused on radically shortening that time, lowering costs, and reducing the negative economic impact on companies and communities when defense programs and spending changes.”

Together, members will network past, present, and future defense-supported metals manufacturers directly with advanced manufacturing research and development centers via a centralized, artificially intelligent database. This platform will enable defense manufacturing contractors to efficiently use AM processes to shorten product development cycles, expand product mix, enter new non-defense markets, increasing economic diversification of their businesses along with economic and workforce resilience.

31040788872?profile=originalLarry H. Miller Toyota Boulder and its customers are driving support for the Arbor Day Foundation’s 2017 Boulder Community Tree Recovery program throughout the month of April. The program aims to distribute trees to Boulder residents whose trees have been destroyed by the emerald ash borer (EAB) beetle, an invasive species native to northeastern Asia that infects and kills ash trees.

For every new vehicle purchased during the month, the dealership, via its charitable arm Larry H. Miller Charities, will make a $15 donation to the project that is restoring and beautifying the local community one tree at a time.

”We are committed to the legacy of our founder, who believed a successful business has an obligation to enrich lives and serve as a steward to the surrounding community,” said Jarred Black, general manager, Larry H. Miller Toyota Boulder. “Our employees, customers and vendors have roots in the Boulder community, and we all benefit by helping to restore our city’s beauty by replacing lost trees.”

The Arbor Day Foundation will distribute 329 new trees on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 at McGuckin's Hardware Store - 2525 Arapahoe Ave - from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This initiative, which is free of charge to Boulder residents, will help to replace trees damaged and destroyed by the EAB beetle. The urban forestry division of the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Division discovered the Colorado EAB infestation in September 2013.

“The Arbor Day Foundation is pleased to partner with Larry H. Miller Toyota Boulder to help heal the Boulder community from the devastation of emerald ash borer,” said Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. “Because of the generosity of our national and local sponsors, the Community Tree Recovery program will help area residents begin to replace more than 78,000 affected trees and shape the landscape that will be the Boulder of tomorrow.”

Larry H. Miller Toyota is active throughout the year in the Boulder community. Every April, the dealership pays tribute to its founder, the late Larry H. Miller, on his birthday, by participating in a community service project. In 2016, employees volunteered with There With Care, a local non-profit whose mission is to provide a wide range of thoughtful and fundamental services to children and families during the critical phase of a medical crisis. Since 1984, the dealership has supported the local community with charitable donations to organizations such as ELPASO (Engaged Latino Parents Advancing School Outcomes), Muscular Dystrophy Association, Second Wind Fund of Boulder County, Via Mobility Services, Boulder Asian Pacific Alliance, Autism Society of Boulder County, and together with Toyota, has been a proud partner in the Elephant Passage at the Denver Zoo.

(Lafayette, CO) – The Herbert & Judy Paige Family Foundation is impacting senior care in Boulder County and beyond through funding and lending to TRU Community Care. Through a shared Board Member, Timothy Schafer, a local attorney specializing in estate planning and a native of Broomfield, TRU has benefited from the Paige Foundation through a low-cost loan of $1.5 million to help with program start-up costs associated with TRU PACE and a capital grant of $40,000 to help offset construction costs.

TRU PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) launched on March 1, 2017 and serves frail elders who are nursing-home eligible, allowing them to remain safely in their community. PACE is a model of care that provides an 11-member interdisciplinary team approach to create individualized care plans. PACE participants visit the center two, three, or five days each week to receive care. In-home care is provided to round out the TRU PACE spectrum of services.

PACE is a Medicare/Medicaid funded program, but start-up costs, along with costs to provide the PACE center are not reimbursed by these government insurance programs. Therefore, TRU Community Care has been raising funds through a capital campaign to help to offset costs associated with their construction of the PACE center. The Paige Foundation made a grant of $40,000 to assist with the capital campaign.

PACE requirements dictate that program staff must be in place before any seniors can join the program. When the Paige Foundation learned about the need to front the program costs, Schafer put the foundation and the organization together to discuss possible loan arrangements. The very favorable loan rate the foundation offered to TRU enabled TRU PACE to borrow $1.5 million.

TRU Community Care is grateful for the significant support offered by The Paige Foundation at this time of important growth in service to our community of frail seniors and their families.

(BOULDER, Colo., April 10, 2017) – 8z Real Estate, a Colorado owned real estate brokerage, was named the top middle sized workplace in Colorado, in the Denver Post’s annual Top Workplaces survey.  The rankings were announced to participating companies at an event on April 4th at Denver Center for the Performing Arts, and announced to the public in the April 7th edition of the Denver Post.

CEO and Founder Lane Hornung commented, “What makes 8z a great workplace? It’s pretty simple; we have great people working together on a shared goal, fixing real estate.”

Full time professional Realtors have a different experience when they join 8z.  8z supports their Realtors with a comprehensive system which includes lead generation, marketing, training, and administrative support.   The training and support are designed to not only grow a Realtor’s expertise, but also increase the productivity per agent.

8zers also find support through the collaborative culture that is shared across the company.  Doug Gieck, the Production Manager, commented: “[our Realtors] put the client's interests in front of our own because 8z Realtors are collaborative. We work as a team to achieve the highest standards of service for our clients. You might find that from one or two agents at a typical real estate office, but to find that companywide is rare.”

The company has been rising in the ranks and getting noticed as a top workplace. Previously competing in the small workplaces division of the Top Workplaces survey, 8z ranked 5th in 2016, and 9th in 2015.  8z grew into the medium sized division in 2017, competing against other companies with 150-499 employees.

The Denver Post Top Workplaces survey is organized by WorkplaceDynamics, a leading research firm on organizational health and employee engagement.  WorkplaceDynamics invited 1,048 companies in Colorado to participate.  They surveyed employees from 213 organizations and received 48,109 responses.  The twenty-four question survey digs deeper than just the benefits an employee receives, but qualitative factors including confidence in the company’s leadership, employee loyalty, and alignment with company values and where the company is headed, among other factors.

Northern Colorado leads the way to advocate for industrial hemp in Washington, DC

Loveland, CO – The NoCo Hemp Expo, the largest hemp-centric event in the U.S., will represent and advocate for the nation’s industrial hemp industry at Hemp on the Hill Tuesday, February 28, 2017. This expo and conversation is hosted by Congressman Jared Polis, with Co-hosts Congressmen Massie, Comer, Blumenauer, and Honorary Co-Host Senator Wyden. The event will be held at the Rayburn Foyer, 45 Independence Avenue SW in Washington, DC, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“We are honored to be part of this effort to educate our leaders and to do away with outdated and misinterpreted federal regulations governing industrial hemp,” said NoCo Hemp Expo Founder Morris Beegle. “We value the efforts of Congressman Polis and his congressional colleagues to advocate for industrial hemp as the viable, sustainable, job-creating industry it can be.”

The gathering is an opportunity for hemp producers to showcase their products and the value their businesses provide to the economy, locally, regionally, and nationally. The event brings together policy makers and business leaders in industrial hemp. By demonstrating the varied uses of industrial hemp and showing the diverse economic benefits the industry provides, organizers hope more legislators will join the effort to help propel the crop to be regulated by the department of agriculture at the federal level, just like corn, soy, and wheat.

“Current federal prohibitions on industrial hemp stifle innovation and job growth, and hamstring efforts of agricultural and product development experts to diversify their efforts and compete on the global stage,” Beegle added. “The entire hemp plant, including ALL parts, compounds and constituents, is a healthy, safe, environmentally beneficial, ag-crop with the potential to create thousands of domestic products, hundreds of thousands of jobs, and generate substantial revenue and tax proceeds. We need federal regulations to change and remove unnecessary red tape that currently hampers the industry.”

Morris noted that industrial hemp, which as a crop provides the raw material for a broad spectrum of uses, including construction, nutrition, textiles, and therapeutic uses, has long been inappropriately categorized and stigmatized by the mis-perception that it is the same as marijuana. “While it’s all cannabis, hemp is not marijuana, it has little to no THC, it is not psychoactive, it is not a drug, and has never qualified to be a Schedule 1 or any schedule on the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Naturally occurring cannabinoids and other compounds, including cannabidiol or CBD, can be used for nutritional, wellness, nutraceutical, and medicinal products that have legitimate therapeutic uses. It’s important that we differentiate hemp and marijuana as the DEA and FDA continue to muddy the waters with ‘alternative facts’ and overreaching inaccurate statements pertaining to hemp and the medicinal properties related to cannabidiol / CBD.”

Beegle will be accompanied by several of NoCo Hemp Expo’s key strategic partners, including author and hemp evangelist Doug Fine and leading cannabis law firm the Hoban Law Group. Also attending will be Tim Gordon and Preston Whitfield from CBDRx, Sean Murphy of Hemp Business Journal, Rick Trojan of the Hemp Road Trip, Samantha Walsh and Michael Bowman of National Hemp Association, Colleen Keahey of Hemp Industries Association, and Eric Steenstra of VoteHemp. Additional hemp companies and stakeholders will also be represented at #HempOnTheHill.

Most of these key Expo partners will be speaking at NoCo Hemp Expo 4, March 31 and April 1, 2017 in Loveland Colorado. Expo events include two full expo halls; a dedicated business/industry day; the Hemp Summit with CannaPro Series for attorneys, accountants and professional services; Fashion Alley; an Artists & Activists Tent; as well as expert speakers, workshops, demonstrations, and countless other educational and networking opportunities including a post-expo concert. Additional programming and ticket sales information can be found HERE.

Freedom's Thunder

The 2016 - 2017 N.S.C.A.R. National Theme is Freedom's Thunder31040785494?profile=original. During the course of our nation’s history there have been many landmark events with long-term positive effects, however; only one holds the distinct claim of being the final liberation of our citizens. The siege of Yorktown was a series of battles that shook the foundation of the world’s ruling governments, set the stage for the beginning of a new independent nation, and bestowed liberty upon American citizens for all time. This last major land battle of the American Revolutionary war triggered the British surrender because it disabled the sizeable British forces of General Lord Cornwallis.

In September of 1781, a series of events enabled George Washington to successfully lead 20,000 Colonial and French forces against the British in Yorktown, Virginia. The French fleet, under the command of Admiral de Grasse, blocked British naval support from reaching the Chesapeake Bay and in the process isolated 8,000 entrenched British, Hessian and Loyalist forces. The Comte de Rochambeau commanded the French Army sent to America to aid the colonists. Washington and Rochambeau’s military strategy and command of the combined French and American Army units paved the way for this landmark victory. The bombardment of cannon was heard for miles as if a storm of massive thunder had enveloped the peninsula. The siege of Yorktown in October 1781 shook the world and forever cast off the yoke of oppression for our new nation.

The national project that will raise funds for the creation of an enhanced outdoor interpretive program at the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown (ARMY). The Artillery and Firing Station will feature an educational program on the siege of Yorktown as well as firing demonstrations of the cannons.  C.A.R. will fund the procurement of artillery pieces as well as the creation of an educational program highlighting the soldier’s deeds, the efforts of our allies and leaders, all encompassed in a hands-on learning environment featuring artillery demonstration for persons of all ages.
