It’s a toxic love story with an environmental twist! Based on the 1984 cult film classic, The Toxic Avenger is part love story and part laugh-out-loud musical that has it all: New Jersey’s one and only Super Hero, a lovely leading lady, and, because it takes place in Jersey, a corrupt mayor, as well as the usual thugs, bullies, mobsters, and of course, stiletto-wearing back-up singers! Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, The Toxic Avenger is the perfect campy, hysterical Halloween musical!

File this under “stories that will make you smile.” FirstBank, Colorado’s second largest bank and one of the nation’s largest privately held banks, recently undertook a mission to surprise and celebrate a pair of longtime customers at their Longmont location. The customers, Don and Lois, were invited into the branch on their 70th wedding anniversary, and when they arrived, it was to fanfare they couldn’t have imagined.

The bank staff, many of whom have become like family to Don and Lois over the 40 years they’ve been customers, greeted the couple at the door to wish them a happy anniversary and kick-off the festivities. A framed wedding portrait and a gift box loaded with everything from travel mugs to local honey awaited the lovebirds.

But the celebration didn’t stop there. A stretch limo, complete with Don and Lois’ friends and family, whisked the happy couple off for an unforgettable dinner at the Boulder Cork restaurant. “Can you believe this?” Don asked his wife. “No, I’m dreaming,” Lois responded.

Don and Lois’ special night was one of many Good Customer surprises planned by the bank. FirstBank says the campaign is all about celebrating some of the exceptional people they are proud to call customers.

Check out the video to see more of the 70th-anniversary surprise:

PARKER, CO (8/15/18) – The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) invites riders, runners and walkers of all levels to join the celebration and be part of the movement to fight diabetes by taking part in the new Tour de Cure®, a fitness and community event happening on September 8, 2018 at Salisbury Equestrian Park & Sports Complex to help raise funds to support the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Every 21 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with diabetes. In addition, nearly half of all American adults have either diabetes or prediabetes, which puts them at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. People with diabetes are at significant risk for serious complications including kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, blindness and lower-limb amputations. As the ADA’s premier fundraising event and one of the nation’s largest series of diabetes fundraising events, Tour de Cure brings together volunteers and participants invested in stemming the diabetes epidemic and funding research to find a cure.

“Tour de Cure is more than just a ride, walk or run– it is a celebration of the ADA’s mission and a chance to raise critical funds to help fight diabetes. Every mile covered and every dollar raised brings us that much more support in fighting this disease that affects 401,000 people in our community,” said Dave Samson, Area Executive Director (CO, MT, UT, WY). “The prevalence of diabetes is growing each year, and action is absolutely necessary.”

Funds raised at Tour de Cure Colorado help the ADA support people through its youth and family initiatives, including multiple camps for children living with type 1 diabetes and those at-risk for type 2 diabetes. Camp fosters fun, independence, self-confidence and expands children’s knowledge of diabetes while making friends who understand what it’s like living with diabetes and creating experiences that last a lifetime. In 2017, 1,120 campers, families and volunteers participated in an ADA Camp program in Colorado. In addition, Tour de Cure helps drive discovery by providing crucial diabetes research funding, and allows the ADA to raise its voice to fight for the rights of all people affected by diabetes.

In addition to the traditional cycling ride, this year’s Tour de Cure event also features a 5k run as well as a 5k walk. The event provides a unique opportunity for businesses, clubs, friends and families to come together with the vision of a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens. Men, women, and children of all ages from around the region will form teams and gather at one of 6 routes to participate in the event.

Tour de Cure is designed for participants of all fitness levels, with 12-mile routes for the occasional cyclist to 100-mile century rides for experienced cyclists, and a 5k that you can walk or run.  Routes feature rest stops with food to fuel the journey and volunteers to cheer riders along the way. Participants who have diabetes get VIP treatment. More than 65,000 cyclists and volunteers from across the country participate in TDC events each year.

Sponsored nationally by Eli Lilly and Company, Primal Wear Inc., Performance Bicycle and Culligan Water, and locally by presenting sponsor Primal Wear Inc., Town of Parker, United Healthcare, Parker Adventist Hospital, Amazing Moves Moving and Storage and CBS Denver, Tour de Cure features a variety of routes.  Whether short or long, each route is fully supported with rest stops, SAG vehicles and more. This year, there are four cycling routes (100 Mile Century Ride, 63 mile, 32 mile, and 12 mile), as well as a 5K Timed Run and 5K Walk. To register to ride, run, walk or volunteer and for more information go to www.diabetes.org/coloradotourdecure.

SOLO STORYTELLING PUTS SEXUAL ASSAULT CENTER STAGE

“I Killed the Cow” is accessible #metoo for Boulder Fringe

BOULDER, CO — New York-based theatre collective The Herd will present its one-woman show I Killed the Cow as part of the 2018 Boulder Fringe Festival. After an extended run in New York City at the United Solo Festival in October 2017, I Killed the Cow will perform August 17–25 at the Pine Street Church Secret Chapel (1237 Pine St.) in Boulder as the second leg on its national tour.

I Killed the Cow tells the story of one woman reflecting on the moments that shaped her most: awkward first sexual encounters, rehearsing mortifying phone calls, and tuning in to doctrinal lectures on veganism. She realizes, however, that the consequences of one particular moment—her assault—have been long-repressed. Through conversations with the audience and Mother Cheetah, she resolves to no longer shy away from what has happened. She must face this moment head-on.

Co-created and performed by Broadway World award-winning actress Larissa Marten, I Killed the Cow asks: When it feels like the lawless world of sexuality is devouring you alive, how do you make your body your own?

I Killed the Cow has been in development since July of 2015 and was born out of Marten’s reflections on her own life experiences. The play promotes a more accessible dialogue around female sexuality and sexual assault.

“I’ve always found theatre to be an incredible tool for encouraging empathy and conversation,” says director and co-creator Leia Squillace,“Working on I Killed the Cow has allowed me to apply that tool to an issue that is of great importance for me personally as well as globally at the present moment.”

Squillace has collaborated with the University of Michigan’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center to create a joint workshop for audiences to delve further into the play’s themes and learn about sexual misconduct prevention and response.

I Killed the Cow will be performed as part of the Boulder Fringe Festival on 8/17 at 4:45 p.m. (2-for-1 tickets), 8/18 at 9:15 p.m., 8/23 at 7:15 p.m., 8/24 at 8:45 p.m., and 8/25 at 7:15 p.m.. All performances are at The Secret Chapel at the Pine Street Church at 1237 Pine Street in downtown Boulder. Suitable for audiences 13+. Tickets start at $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and students, and can be purchased at boulderfringe.com or at the door. For more information about Boulder Fringe, visit boulderfringe.com.

Miller Toyota Boulder – with the help of customers and employees – will look to fill a car, truck or SUV in their showroom with school supplies such as backpacks, pencils, highlighters, scissors, binders, rulers, calculators and lunch bags.  In addition, monetary contributions can be made online through the Volunteers of America.Donations collected will be distributed to more than 15 school districts throughout Colorado, including Boulder Valley & St Vrain School Districts, to benefit pre-kindergarten to high school students in need and in under-served communities.

This year, it's estimated that parents will spend an average of $510 on school supplies, which is a financial burden for many Colorado families. As a result, teachers often take on the costly burden of purchasing supplies for their students. According to the Colorado Education Association, Colorado teachers reach into their own pockets every year and spend on average $656 for supplies for their students and classrooms. Approximately 23 percent of school children in the counties served by the VOA are living in poverty, compared to the state average of 14.7 percent. In Colorado school districts, nearly 25,000 pupils enrolled in public schools have been identified as experiencing homelessness.

“The teacher walkouts seen around the country this year highlight how dramatically underfunded public schools can be. A lack of resources means children living in poverty could fall behind in class,” said Bradley Gulley, director of volunteer services, Volunteers of America Colorado. “The donated school supplies from Larry H. Miller dealerships and their customers make a real difference in helping children be successful in the classroom.”

Since 2015, Larry H. Miller Dealerships has raised close to $50,000 in school supplies, including contributing $23,500 in monetary and school supply donations to the 2017 campaign that benefited 60,000 Colorado students. The community is encouraged to join Larry H. Miller Toyota Boulder in helping to prepare school children for success by visiting the dealership and dropping off essential classroom items.

International organization selects local manufacturing leader

to help advance women in additive manufacturing

Frederick, CO – H2 Manufacturing Solutions, providing manufacturers a broad scope of problem-solving services, has been selected to start a new Colorado chapter of Women in 3D Printing, an organization founded in 2014 by Nora Touré to support women working in the 3D printing industry.

Women in 3D Printing (Wi3DP) has added seven new chapters in North America and Europe since the beginning of the year. This expansion is integral to the group’s commitment to promote, support, and inspire women in the 3D printing industry, profile leaders in the field, and increase visibility of women in additive manufacturing.

“I have been following Women in 3D Printing since its beginning and have been impressed. I had the opportunity to meet Nora this year in San Francisco and immediately appreciated her goal and her vision,” said H2 Manufacturing Solutions CEO Heidi Hostetter. “I knew it would be amazing to work with her to bring this organization to Colorado and be a part of this global movement in which she believes so completely and passionately. Nora had many choices, so the honor is all ours that she trusted us with this opportunity.”

Touré is an expert in additive manufacturing and has been in the industry since 2010, when she joined online 3D Printing service leader Sculpteo as one of its first employees. In June this year she became VP of Strategy for Ivaldi Group. Touré is not only passionate about the development of 3D printing, she also has a vision for social inclusion, which led her to found the organization.

When asked why she chose Denver and H2 Manufacturing Solutions to help build this new chapter, Touré stated, “Denver is home to a huge community of entrepreneurs, makers, and manufacturers. At Women in 3D Printing, we know the key to a stronger community and a more reliable network to the women in our industry is a local presence in hubs like Denver. Heidi and Adam are two powerhouses and it made sense to me to work with them to bring Wi3DP to Denver. I am thrilled to have them as part of our community and to grow this network with them.”

Industry veterans and newcomers alike are invited to attend the first Colorado chapter meeting , August 16th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at ICOSA Media, 4100 Jackson Street in Denver. Register and find additional information on Facebook and Meetup.

Local Little Free Libraries and Book Bingo encourage exploration of America’s 100 best-loved novels

31040794869?profile=originalIt’s almost summertime, and the reading – at least this year – should be easier than ever with Rocky Mountain PBS inviting everyone to join The Great American Read.

The Great American Read is both an eight-part series on PBS that explores and celebrates the power of reading and an opportunity locally for readers to engage with the list of America’s 100 best-loved novels, as chosen in a national survey.

“The Great American Read” premiers May 22 at 7 p.m. and – after what is hopefully a summer of inspired reading – returns Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 - October 30. The series investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.

RMPBS is supporting the event across Colorado with sponsors including the University of Colorado Denver School of Education & Human Development, Junior League of Denver and Chalat Law.

Plan your hammock reading time and get involved in these community engagement activities:

  •  Little Free Libraries featuring books from the list of 100 will be hosted by Rocky Mountain PBS in Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Durango. Visit the libraries to take, leave or donate a book. Information on specific locations can be found at org/greatamericanread.
  • Play Book Bingo by downloading the PDF from the RMPBS website or by visiting your local library to pick up a card. Complete your “Bingo,” snap a picture of your completed card, post to Instagram, tag @rmpbs and use the hashtag #greatreadpbs, and be entered to win a Kindle with all 100 books from the list included. Also, do your own Book Bingo challenge with your book-loving friends or book club.
  • Check out org/greatamericanread to take the quiz and see how many books on the list you’ve already read.
  • Share your review of any book on the list on the RMPBS Facebook page.
  • Donate a book on the list to any of our stations in Denver, Colorado Springs and Grand Junction to help fill our Little Free Libraries. Find locations here.
  • Anyone interested in hosting their own viewing party can reach out to RMPBS at webmail@rmpbs.org.

Meredith Vieira is the host of the series, with notable figures from entertainment, sports, news, and literary worlds interviewed about their favorite book from the list, which includes authors from more than 10 countries and includes 26 books that have been banned or challenged, 19 stories with strong heroines, and eight Pulitzer Prize winners.

If a book you love is missing from the list, share it with #GreatReadWish.

For years, activists around the country have railed against fracking, but it wasn’t until the 2010 release of “Gasland” (and the infamous sequence of Weld County, CO residents lighting their tap water on fire), that the general public was galvanized in the fight against fracking.

In Colorado, the fight really began to heat up when the City of Longmont introduced Ballot Question 300 in November of 2012, which banned the use of the fracking process to extract oil or gas, as well as the storage of produced frack fluid within city limits. The measure passed by a significant margin of the popular vote, and the very next year, the cities of Fort Collins, Boulder, and Broomfield all passed similar 5-year moratoria to stop fracking within their city limits. The city of Lafayette also passed an indefinite ban on fracking during that same voting period in 2013.

The voters’ choice did not stay for long, however. Shortly after the Longmont Ballot Question 300 was passed, the City of Longmont was sued by the Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA) and the State of Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) to overturn the amendment. It was ruled at the district level that fracking fell under the jurisdiction of the State, and that the City “does not have the authority to prohibit what the state authorizes and permits”, but immediately after the ruling, the case was appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court, meaning the ban would stay in effect until the state ruling was given.

Before the appeal was heard, however, Governor John Hickenlooper was able to negotiate a deal between the oil and gas industry and the anti-fracking environmental groups: 4 controversial ballot measures (2 supported by each side) would be removed from the upcoming state ballot, an 18-member committee would be assembled in order to advise the state government on issues around fracking, and the COGCC would drop its case against the City of Longmont, allowing the fracking ban to remain in effect.

Unfortunately, the fight was not over. In 2016, a lawsuit between COGA and the City of Fort Collins made its way to the Colorado Supreme Court. An excerpt from the court’s decision on that case is as follows: “We conclude that because fracking is a matter of mixed state and local concern, Fort Collins’s fracking moratorium is subject to preemption by state law… Accordingly, we hold that the moratorium is preempted by state law and is, therefore, invalid and unenforceable.”

This was the final nail in the coffin for the fight against fracking on the Front Range. The State Supreme Court had upheld that the city couldn’t ban what the state allowed, and had also explicitly stated that oil and gas development was in the state’s, not the city’s jurisdiction. This decision was quickly applied to the other bans and moratoria in the area, and with a few exceptions (shortly after the decision, Boulder County enacted a 6-month moratorium in order to update its outdated regulations), the verdict was in and fracking was here to stay.

31040793894?profile=originalOn April 26, employees from Larry H. Miller Toyota Boulder spent their time not at the dealership, but out in the community doing good. During the annual Larry H. Miller Day of Service, employees volunteered at Valmont Bike Park armed with shovels and gardening tools to help refresh and prepare the park for the summer season. Joining the employees this year were their children, who eagerly took part in assisting their parents.

LHM Toyota Boulder joined hundreds of employees throughout Colorado and across the country who volunteered during the Day of Service. The company-wide initiative honors the legacy of its founder, the late Larry H. Miller, on his birthday. Miller, who passed away in 2009, strongly supported giving back in the communities where he did business. Since 2010, 9,744 employees have donated over 38,972 hours at 192 locations in seven states as part of the Day of Service initiative.

“I’m very proud of our employees for their dedication to helping those in the communities where we live and work,” said Ray Reilly, senior vice president, Larry H. Miller Dealerships. “Their efforts during the Day of Service are just one way in which they give their time, money and talent to enrich the lives of others.”

Larry H. Miller began his career as a parts salesman in Denver in 1970 and opened his first store in Colorado in 1987. Today the dealership group is the second largest in Colorado and employs more than 1,200 individuals at 14 locations. Through its charitable organization, Larry H. Miller Charities, more than $700,000 has been donated to qualified nonprofit organizations throughout Colorado since 1997.

Years before I deployed on an aircraft carrier as an openly transgender man, I was raped as a college sophomore. He was a lawyer more than twice my age; I didn’t know whom to tell. I began an eight-year habit of trying to drown feelings of powerlessness and isolation by drinking to blackout. I left school and enlisted in the Navy where I learned how rampant sexual violence really is, and eventually became certified as a Sexual Assault Victim Advocate so that I could be a resource for others.

Today, I am a 27-year-old college junior at CU-Boulder, recovering alcoholic, and passionate advocate against sexual misconduct. This week, our state legislature is considering House Bill 1391, concerning Sexual Misconduct in Higher Education, a Colorado-specific solution to sexual misconduct on college campuses. This bill clarifies ever-changing federal guidelines so that students across the state can count on a fair, clear, and consistent response to sexual misconduct allegations.

I urge students and residents statewide to express support for this measure by emailing or calling their State Senator before Monday, April 23rd when the bill could be seen in Committee to ensure that students who experience sexual violence are not deprived of their access to a safe and meaningful education.

Signed,

Jackson Reinagel
