The Fairview High School Fine Arts Department has entered a national competition sponsored by the wildly popular television show “Glee” that could result in a $50,000 prize and an amazing upgrade for the school’s aging auditorium. Fairview is the only High School in Boulder County involved in the national contest.

The Fairview video submission was accepted and is posted on the national Glee Contest web site www.gleegiveanote.com. Members of the community can vote for Fairview by logging onto the site and searching the entries by state or school name.  Everyone is allowed and encouraged to vote daily through November 7th, and at that point the top 100 videos will advance to the next round of judging.

Fairview High School has had a long history of high-quality extensive choral and instrumental music programs. The program is renowned throughout the region and various groups are invited annually to perform at the prestigious Colorado Music Educator's Conference, held at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

The prize money would be used toward renovating the school’s auditorium, originally built in 1971. More than 900 Fairview students participate in the Fine Arts Program, which includes 9 choral groups, three jazz bands, three classical music ensembles and the Marching Knights. Only 2% of the funding required to keep the Fairview Fine Arts program thriving comes from the school district. The remaining budget comes through fundraising efforts, and unique opportunities such as this one, throughout the year.

BOULDER, Colo. — Bradley Schuller, Ph.D. and physicist with Boulder-based Rocky Mountain CyberKnife, recently presented research findings from a pilot study conducted in conjunction with Mountain Radiation Oncology Consultants at the 53rd annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in Vancouver.

The study examined the calculation of cumulative biological effective dose (BED) distributions in multi-modality cancer treatment plans, specifically those in which patients were treated with conventional radiation therapy followed by stereotactic body radiotherapy. The BED represents the amount of radiation delivered to a tumor site and takes into account various factors influencing the effects of radiation on a given tissue.

Few reported studies have examined the feasibility of constructing cumulative BED distributions in combined treatment regimes.

31040775854?profile=originalSchuller’s research findings will serve as a reference tool for physicists engaged in similar radiation therapy treatment planning as that of the pilot study, which analyzed tissue response in patients who received conventional radiation therapy followed by stereotactic body radiotherapy with the CyberKnife.

“There is increased evidence supporting stereotactic body radiotherapy as a supplemental treatment option following conventional radiation therapy, and we wanted to take a closer look at how body tissue responds to the radiation dose delivered when these treatment methods are combined,” said Schuller. “Our research opens the door for future related studies and provides a useful tool for doctors and physicists involved in radiation therapy treatment planning.”

Rocky Mountain CyberKnife was formed through a partnership between Boulder Community Hospital and US Radiosurgery. It was established in 2003 as the first CyberKnife center in Colorado, marking only the eighth CyberKnife program operating in the U.S. at that time. Since then, the center has performed over 4,500 CyberKnife treatments on patients from 35 different states.

CyberKnife treats cancerous and benign tumors in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate through a process called stereotactic body radiotherapy, a noninvasive method of treating tumors with high-dose radiation precisely aimed from different angles. The result is greatly increased accuracy that spares healthy tissue. Treatments are complete in one to five treatment sessions.

Rocky Mountain CyberKnife is a service of Boulder Community Hospital and is located at 905 Alpine Ave. in Boulder, Colo. For more information, call (303) 448-4620 or visit www.rockymountainck.com.

Schlosser Signs Acquires New Channel Letter Machine

Schlosser Signs Acquires New Channel Letter Machine

Accu-Bend improves sign manufacture speed, efficiency, safety

Loveland, Colo. — Schlosser Signs (www.schlossersigns.com), a leader in the design, manufacture and installation of signage in northern Colorado and beyond, has announced the acquisition of a new piece of equipment, an Accu-Bend Lite machine from Computerized Cutters, Inc., of Plano, Texas. The computer-controlled machine automatically manufactures aluminum channel letters, reducing by up to 75 percent the time required to fabricate letters by hand.

“This machine lets us keep our skilled craftsmen focused on other priorities,” notes Carla Schlosser, CEO of Schlosser Signs. “And the improved efficiency and reduced waste will allow us to be more competitive, both for small orders and larger contracts, as well.”

To see the machine in action, visit https://www.youtube.com/schlossersigns. Schlosser notes that they are now the only retail sign company north of Denver to have a machine with this capability. “Channel letters” are the custom-made sides, exterior or frame of standard three-dimensional exterior signage commonly used by businesses and other organizations.

Once the machine has been programmed using a standard sign design software interface, the Accu-Bend machine takes raw stock aluminum fed from a coil on a motorized material feed table, sends it through the machine to be notched, flanged, bent, and cut, and places the finished product on a stainless steel offload table. Other companies have used the machine to increase their output of channel letters by 400 to 500 percent, while producing a more consistent, accurate product.

The company also plans to make use of the new machine to offer more options to its contract sign installation customers. Schlosser has long been a trusted sub-contract installation partner for national sign manufacturers, receiving signs shipped from around the country for installation across Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. Now, it’s possible for computer design files to be emailed to Schlosser so the company can manufacture the channel letters.

The Accu-Bend was the world’s first machine created to automatically notch, flange and bend complete channel letters. It handles .063-gauge aluminum material at a feed rate up to one foot per second, and produces single-piece letters, shapes and logos up to 15 feet tall.

(Boulder, Colorado). September 12, 2011 -- The Boulder Emergency Squad-(B.E.S.) has been providing high quality, professional volunteer rescue services to Boulder County for over 46 years.  Every two years, the members of the organization elect a President to lead them.  The President also serves as the Chief of the Squad and works with the member-elected Board of Directors to provide executive leadership for the team.

This year, the members have elected Andrew (Andy) M. Amalfitano as their new President/Chief with past Chief Andrew Moschetti taking on the role of Deputy Chief Operations Planning. Chief Amalfitano brings a wealth of executive leadership to the team. Amalfitano also has extensive experience as a participating member on a number of search and rescue, fire department, and ambulance agencies.

Joe Pelle, Sheriff Boulder County, was thrilled to learn of Andy returning to the helm at B.E.S. "BES has always been counted on to provided a well-trained group of dedicated, volunteer rescuers who deliver a number of emergency services and I know that Andy will bring his broad leadership experience in guiding the next evolution of these services", said Pelle.

Amalfitano served in leadership roles for high-tech firms and is currently, the Vice President of Product Development and Global Operations at iCarnegie, a division of Carnegie Mellon University, where he is responsible for the strategic direction of program sourcing and development and delivery of iCarnegie’s learning portfolio. Amalfitano earned a Master of Science degree in Business Continuity Management from Norwich University and a Masters degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Fairfield University. Amalfitano says he is excited about the new challenge and appreciates the accomplishments of outgoing president Andrew Moschetti. "I want to thank Chief Moschetti for continuing the proud tradition of BES in the County. The squad has grown under his leadership and he will remain as a valuable contributing member of our team.  BES and volunteerism has always been part of who I am.  I have grown personally and professionally as a result of my participation in the organization and I am humbled and honored that the membership has elected me to lead them, said Amalfitano."

31040774492?profile=originalSearch people by phone number online queries are an everyday occurrence. I can tell you that over one million reverse phone searches are conducted every single day for people looking up phone numbers. There are a variety of reasons to search peoples phone numbers on the Internet. Did someone call you in the middle of the night and hang-up? Were you running through the front door with an arm full of groceries and miss the call and you do not know who it was? Do you need to find out who keeps calling you and harassing you?

Or maybe just because you can with all the great online people search tools which are available today. Try Calling the Number Probably one of the easiest things that you can do if you need to look up cell phone numbers is to actually try calling the number. See if they answer the phone and give you their name. If you get their voice mail, then listen and see if they give out their information on the recording when you get it.

This won't cost you anything but a simple phone call, and it may work for you. Sure, you can try finding cell phone numbers with Google or Yahoo, but don't get your hopes up. You'd have to hope that they posted their cell phone numbers somewhere online where the search engines could find it and add it to their listings. And most people are more careful than that with their private number. As a parent you will know your child's normal pattern of behaviour.

Look out for subtle changes. An unwillingness to use their phone when you are around. Turning the phone off when usually they leave it on. Not picking up the phone to look at texts when they come in, or leaving the room before looking. As there is a lot of false information regarding reverse phone lookup directories one thing must be made clear - free phone reverse lookup directories can not trace cell phone numbers or provide you with services like

  • background checks
  • criminal records search
  • SSN validation
  • name

For those of you who are being bothered by such people, let me introduce you to the reverse telephone lookup. Very fast results and easy to use. Not only can you get the name for the owner of the telephone number but you can get an address as well. Until recently, there has been so much noise about how difficult it is to access a directory of cell phone users. The mobile telecommunications service providers came up with a lot of excuses on how the law forbids them from publishing names of their subscribers.

The truth is that the issue is actually beyond that of privacy, but profit maximization as well. Call it what you feel like, telecommunications outfits know how to make a fortune out of their subscriber base. If reverse lookup companies want to make a success of their business, they must play ball according to the terms of the telecommunications companies; they must buy access into their databases. You have a lot of options in conducting reverse phone search to find people using phone number.

It depends on your needs and how detailed the information you want to be. Of course most people will try free services. While free services are easy to access over the internet, you will only find very limited information on free searches. There are numerous tell tale signs that your spouse or partner might be unfaithful to you. You could be feeling angry, hurt, distressed, or confused. There comes a time when you have the need to get your questions and doubts answered once and for all. You might have considered hiring a private investigator to make sure there are no instances of an affair.

You will be faced with two serious obstacles if you go with this type of plan. First, it is very expensive. Second, it requires a lot of time and effort to gather information. The P.I. would need plenty of time to do his job well. Are you sure you can wait for a few months or several weeks just to get an answer? On knowing this, I feel a bit at ease because this is the way it is supposed to be. Nonetheless, if you think again, on the other hand, how did somebody unknown get my phone number any way? So it's far from fair in this term. To this point, you might have come up with what I was going to do next.

Martial Arts & Fighting

Often, martial arts is stigmatized with negative actions or behaviors.  This is caused by media, the film industry, certain professional or amateur fighters etc.  However, in this blog article, I would like to prove that this should not be generalized and it does not have to be this way.

Originally, martial arts was developed to increase the chance of survival.  Later on, it started to be used as a sport, in competition, as an art form and more.  Mostly, the code of honor and respect was central and utterly important for the practitioners.  Of course, there are always bad apples and all human advancements are always used for good and bad causes (think about samurais who valued honor vs. ninjas who were spies and mercenaries).

Some of these traditional martial arts styles are still widely practiced but unfortunately are also very outdated.  This will be a ongoing discussion but someone practicing Tai Chi, Karate, traditional Judo etc. will learn many techniques that are simply not functional in a real life situation.  This does not mean however, they are less worthy as an art form or for personal development.  For self defense, these and many more styles are very overrated and sometimes even useless.

On the other side, martial arts has also evolved over the last decades. Think about Mixed Martial Arts.  This is the ultimate competition martial arts form and has proven itself over and over again.  For self defense reasons, it may also not be 100% effective though (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will not work with multiple attackers, an MMA fighter will not know how to defend against a knife or gun attack…)
The issue with this progress is that the self defense aspect is often overlooked and the honor and respect are mostly forgotten.  The ratings have gotten so important that most fighters talk badly about each other and have very little respect left.  There are exceptions, think about Georges St. Pierre, who has very strong values and is also one of the best martial artists and fighters in the world.

Martial arts and fighting overlap each other, no doubt about it.  For me, it is your personal attitude that shows which one you are.  You do not have to be mean or disrespectful to be a good martial artist AND fighter.  Talking badly and insulting others only shows a bad attitude (and fear?)  Honor and respect are extremely important in our facility.  We respect our friends, instructors and teammates.  We push each other and ourselves and test each other during training to become the best we can be.  But there are no egos, disrespect, insults or anything else.

Our clients have different goals.  Some want to become a martial artist to defend themselves, other want to get in shape and others want to compete.  But we only train martial artists… that are really proficient in what they do, whether it is being prepared for protecting themselves/other or testing themselves in competition.  Many martial artists can become fighters but not every fighter can become a martial artist.  You will gain a huge amount of knowledge and skills to reach your goal and at the same time, you will gain friends and have fun.

Define Defense focusses on being the best studio in Boulder and offers a modern approach to martial arts, which consist of the most effective and realistic ways in martial arts.  But we have also not forgotten about honor and respect.  These are values that should never be forgotten.  We don't practice traditional martial arts by any means but these values are timeless.  We train individuals to better themselves and learn martial arts so they can feel safer, better about themselves or compete.  We respect everyone's goals and do everything we can for you to meet those.

A little more about what we do for our clients

As you know, there are a lot of different styles of martial arts which you can practice.  Some studios offer a very traditional practice, which is great for the art and philosophy but is not necessarily effective anymore.  Then other gyms offer cardio kickboxing, which is a fantastic workout but martial arts wise you will learn as much as playing Kung Fu video games.  Then there are MMA gyms, a style that has been proven to be highly effective in competition (although that does not mean it is effective in a real self defense situation).  Most martial arts studios will teach you the style that they are proficient in but that may not give you a complete training experience or the best bang for your buck!

I have met many individuals that practice martial arts and hire a personal trainer or strength & conditioning coach on the side.  Or they practice yoga outside of martial arts classes to improve their flexibility, feel in sync with their body etc.  At Define Defense, we approach martial arts training through a modern way and want to redefine martial arts and self defense (Define Defense, get it?).

What we do is offer different programs for different purposes:

- Modern Martial Arts for people wanting to learn and practice all the best of different martial arts in a modern and realistic way while getting a great workout (everything from standup, takedowns, throws etc.)
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for all levels and offering a highly effective mix of BJJ and other forms of submission wrestling for a superior ground game
- Mixed Martial Arts: combining Modern Martial Arts and BJJ for individuals who want to learn MMA or compete
- Women's Self Defense without the intimidation of having men around, all the best and most effective ways to defend yourself as a woman

These programs offer different things for different people and are specific to the goal that wants to be reached.  Now, as a client you will learn a lot of techniques, tactics, submissions, strikes and much more but what if you want to get stronger, in better shape, more flexible etc?  That is why all our clients get complimentary Circuit Training and Yoga classes.  These are included in your membership and are taught by certified instructors.  There is no more need for separate memberships, gyms, trainers and costs.  You get a full training package as a member in our studio.  This way, you get a better and more complete training experience without any additional cost.  You will actually save money because you don't have to go elsewhere anymore.   Our membership fees are highly competitive (the best in the Boulder area) and there are no setup fees or cancellation fees.  Our philosophy is to treat others as you want to be treated and we love the community we have at Define Defense.

Learn why WordPress is becoming the go-to solution for small businesses across the world during a series of hands-on workshops given by the Web Design Academy in Louisville.

“The magic of WordPress is that small businesses can actually take over the management of their sites, while continuing to maintain a visually distinctive and interactive site,” said Jason Ackerman, president of the Academy.

“There are very few designs the platform cannot accommodate and enhance, and of course WordPress and most of the themes are completely free.”

The Academy now offers half-day courses on the platform on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 917 Front Street in downtown Louisville. The courses range from the introductory to courses suitable for web developers on customizing WordPress themes.

WordPress is now powering 14.7 percent of the top 1 million websites in the world, including those of large global businesses, and that number is growing every day, the company reported in its San Francisco conference in August. WordPress now accounts for 22 out of every 100 new active domain names in the U.S.

“Anyone who can manage a basic Windows program can learn to update WordPress sites,” Ackerman said. “It’s simply the most prudent move a small business can make in getting a solid return on investment on its web presence.”

For a complete course schedule and online registration, please visit www.webacademydenver.com, or contact the Academy at learn@webacademydenver.com or 888-977-9960.

Highlands Ranch, CO, September 9, 2011 – Kick off your shoes with Scott Jones, local exercise physiologist and co-founder of The Merrell Naked Foot 5K, for an interactive barefoot running clinic at the Highlands Ranch Library on Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m.

All runners are invited to attend and learn how to incorporate barefoot running into their training regimen. The principles learned in this interactive clinic will also help shod runners run with better form and fewer injuries. Jones doesn’t expect everyone to run barefoot all the time – he doesn’t.

“It’s not about the barefoot movement,” Jones said. “It’s about the movement movement.”

Yes, this clinic is interactive so be prepared to move a little. Jones will also discuss barefoot running literature, including the book Born to Run, and answer questions about minimalist footwear.

Participants can use their newly learned techniques at The Merrell Naked Foot 5K on Sunday, September 18 at Redstone Park in Highlands Ranch, CO. Part of the first-ever national barefoot race series, this 5K challenges runners to run barefoot or test their shod technique against barefoot runners, adding a level of competition and making an effort to earn the respect of the running community.

“Besides injury prevention, aren’t we preaching how we are running smoother and faster bare?” Jones said. “If runners start going bare more often and we start seeing respectable times, this ‘trend’ will take off even more than it has due to the prevention pitch we have been giving in every lecture, clinic and blog around. So let’s embrace shod runners at these events and challenge them down the home stretch. That in the end is the difference in asking for respect and earning it.”

In addition to the 5K, the event includes activities for the entire family: a free kids fun run, one-mile race, foot massages, foot painting, Tarahumara barefoot games, green/healthy living vendors, prizes and more. On the day of each event, The Merrell Naked Foot 5K will be collecting gently worn footwear and donations for Soles4Souls.

These donations will be shipped to victims of natural disasters or people living in extreme poverty. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets.

“We can use the shoes taking up space in your closet to change the world one pair at a time,” said Wayne Elsy, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “We need our partners across the U.S. to 'STEP UP' and get behind our call for action. It’s one of the simplest yet most profound gifts you can make, because it will greatly improve someone’s life in the most difficult of times.”

About The Merrell Naked Foot 5K

Scott and Lauren Jones founded The Merrell Naked Foot 5K, the first national barefoot running series, in an effort to create a unique event to make people curious. As “barefoot moderates,” they run about ten percent of their weekly training miles barefoot because they love the feel and the impact it has on their form and strength, but recognize that there is a time and a place for a good pair of shoes. Scott is an exercise physiologist and former collegiate athlete. Lauren earned her degree in exercise science. As a result, they understand the biomechanics of running and how barefoot running can help improve running form and prevent common running ailments.

The DaVinci Inventor Showcase, one of the nation’s premier inventor product events, dedicated to helping the minds of tomorrow by showcasing the innovative products of today, has just announced the formation of a new award category for the 7th Annual DaVinci Inventor Showcase – Food or Beverage Product Innovation of the Year Award.

This exciting new category at the DaVinci Inventor Showcase was chosen because of all the innovation going on locally and nationally in the food realm. With the push for eating local, and the spotlight on organics and sustainability, this was determined to be an excellent year to introduce an award for innovation in the food and beverage world. The award could be won by a business who presents a gadget that has revolutionary applications or by an innovative edible or beverage itself.

Inventors are the heroes at the DaVinci Institute, a non-profit futurist think tank and idea generator located in Louisville, CO that sponsors the Inventor Showcase. As Thomas Frey, head futurist and executive director at the DaVinci Institute notes, “It is a very exciting to see their eyes light up when they relate the details about the newest project that has captured their fancy.”

The DaVinci Inventor Showcase will be an incredible voyage into the land of invention. It is one of those rare opportunities to meet inventors, feel the intensity of their spirit and experience the innovations of tomorrow. On this rare occasion the public will have a chance to become part of the inventor community. They will be able to see and interact with inventors and their amazing inventions on a personal level, granting them a unique opportunity to step into the future!

This year’s event will include over 100 Celebrity Judges reviewing the entries including TV personalities, VCs, business leaders, product scouts, corporate execs, magazine editors, and many more. Keynote speaker this year is Louis Foreman the CEO of EdisonNation, publisher of Inventor’s Digest, and producer of the Emmy Award winning PBS series Everyday Edisons.

This remarkable event takes place on November 5, 2011 at NOAH’s Event Center in Westminster from Noon to 6pm with a VIP reception from 10am to Noon.

A BIG THANK YOU!

On behalf of the Nathan Beyers Memorial Fundraiser, we would like to sincerely thank the Broomfield Community for its outstanding support of the golf and fundraising event that was held at Greenway Park Golf Course on August 6th.

We were amazed by the response of the community as well as the generosity of the local businesses who donated food, prizes and supplies to make the event a huge success!  We greatly appreciated the Broomfield Enterprise for featuring the story about Nate, his family and how he served our country with courage, honor, and pride.

100% of the funds raised through the golf outing, the silent auction, drawings and general donations were given to Nate’s family. Nate is survived by his wife, 9 month old daughter, parents and brother.  Nate’s family was overwhelmed
and touched by the financial outpouring as well as the love and support that they have received.   They wish to thank everyone and will never forget the compassion they have been shown.

Once again, we send a big thank you to the Broomfield Enterprise, the caring Broomfield community, the outstanding local businesses and the Greenway Park Community and Golf Course. We look forward to seeing you all again next year at the 2nd Annual Nathan Beyers Memorial Golf Outing and Fundraiser.   In honor of Nate and his ultimate sacrifice for our country, we will continue to raise money for other deserving military causes on his behalf.

Sincerely,

Rachelle Moschetti
