Nearly 700 people of all ages, plus several hundred dogs, came together in Boulder on Saturday, September 12, 2009 to raise more than $45,000 for homeless and abandoned animals. It all happened during the 20th Annual A Cause for Paws Doggie Dash and Walk-A-Thon benefiting the Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “Cause for Paws is such a fun event, and we’re so grateful for the tremendous support again this year,” said Lisa Pedersen, CEO of Humane Society of Boulder Valley. “It’s a joy to see so many wonderful examples of healthy pet and guardian relationships during the event. All funds raised today will support the Humane Society as we provide shelter, medical care and behavioral rehabilitation to more than 8,000 animals a year.” The top pledge collectors included Renee Shires of Boulder as the top individual and Rally Software as the top team. The Doggie Dash top overall winner was Chantelle Dron (along with her dog) from Fort Collins with a time of 14:37. This annual event, which began in 1989, is always open to the public and remains one of the shelter’s main fundraising events of the year. This year’s zero-waste event featured corporate and individual team competitions, a pet expo, paw print art, dog and guardian massages, dog agility fun trials, a pancake breakfast, an Avery Brewing beer garden, an 80s costume contest and live music from 80s cover band A Flock of Beagles. More than 100 volunteers were on hand to help organize the event.

Acne scars

Acne is not purely a teenage predicament, 20 to 40% of the adults do encounter problems with acne. In fact, some people are only being paid the first visit in their 40s! The problems of Acne stems from many reasons, which include an overactive sebaceous gland, genetic factors, or lifestyle factors such as stress, excessive dead skin, damage to the skin caused by scratching, and clogging agents trapped on the skin when cosmetics used are not totally cleansed. Acne may also occur as premenstrual flares or due to certain medications such as strong steroid creams. Basically, Acne is formed by a collection of sebum (oil), bacteria and dead cells trapped in the lining of the hair follicle (skin pore). Normally the lining of the hair follicle sheds a layer of dead skin cells at regular intervals. Secretions from the sebaceous gland in the skin push the dead skin cells to the surface. When excessive oil is being produced however, the dead cells will clump together, forming a block at the opening of the hair follicle. When bacteria, which naturally occurs within the hair follicle, starts to break down the material accumulated within the clogged pore, irritating fatty acids are produced. This will cause pressure to build up within the pore, and the pore will be swollen. Redness and inflammation also occur in response to the infection.

Check in with your CPA by year-end

It's always a good idea to check in with your CPA before the year-ends and ideally before the holidays to make sure your bookkeeping is in order. This gives business owners a chance to make any changes to their books before the end of the financial year. The fall season is a good time to do this since it's the slow time for CPA's before the crazy tax season starts. As a bookkeeper, I've seen business owners scrambling to get their books cleaned up after the year is already over in order to get their financial statements to their CPA for tax season.Keep your bookkeeping in order throughout the year and you'll avoid that last-minute scramble at tax time. If a small business owner isn't using QuickBooks to keep their bookkeeping in order, then they probably are missing a lot of information. I find many errors in sales entries, missing deposits, missing payments, etc. that I fix through the reconciliation process in QuickBooks. It can be a powerful tool for business owners and save them time when tax season comes.

. Erotic polarity is created by masculine and feminine energy sources in proximity and sparks both of them. It fascinates us and is the heart of love affairs. . Erotic polarity ebbs and flows in relationships depending on safety, depth of consciousness, development, emotional states, hormonal balances, stressors, and the mysteries of human intimacy. . We all share feminine and masculine aspects. The archetypes of the the feminine as fountain of love and divine knowing, and the masculine as warrior and man of wisdom arise spontaneously in human societies, and always exist in energetic interplay with each other. As we deepen we can access these mythic forces to benefit ourselves, our lovers, and human kind. . Most of us have felt evolution working through us as an optimizing force. We yearn toward the beautiful, good, and true in our thoughts, actions, and relationships. To our dismay, suffering often intrudes as habitual shame, social demands, defensive states, egoic fixations, and relational train wrecks. How do we include and transcend bad habits and negative conditioning to live fully-to surrender to our personal myths of love and service? . Neurobiological research tells us that we rarely eliminate defensive reflexes our nervous system associates with survival. We can include and transcend them by creating secure attachment with ourselves and others, and relaxing into developmental processes which harmonize constantly shifting states of consciousness and altitudes on different developmental lines. . To do this we need to face our most beautiful and repellent selves, connect them with compassion, and exercise intent and will to allow them to evolve towards unity. Wherever there are blocks to growth, we can add compassion and allow ourselves to change. This simple process can resolve trauma, integrate defensive states, and support delicious intimacy. . Throughout this weekend we’ll explore ideas, use music and movement, discover and liberate our masculine and feminine selves, and engage in exercises and personal work to identify and challenge defensive states. We will clarify and enhance personal myths-the autobiographical narratives of our lives. Each of us is at the center of a unique universe, and we can determine the direction and evolutionary flow of our reality through compassionate understanding and right action. . This workshop will be illuminating, transformative, edgy and lots of fun. . When: Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4 . Times on each day: 9:30AM to 4:30PM . Please bring a notebook and wear comfy attire. . Where: Boulder Integral, 2805 Broadway Street, Boulder, CO 80304. . Please email info@boulderintegral.org for questions. . Cost: $179 Standard Registration ($159 Boulder Integral members). .Dr Keith Witt (www.kwwitt.com): Author of, The Gift of Shame, The Attuned Family, Waking, Up, and Sessions, offers 35 years of experience as a therapist, lecturer, and teacher. His article, Developmental Engagement Field Theory, can be found in the current edition of the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice. 9/29/09 at 7PM Entrance $15 (Members $10) At the Boulder Integral Center 2805 Broadway Street, Boulder, CO 80304 - 303 541 1540. _ READ DETAILS HERE. _ In an imbalanced, accelerating world-in-crisis we face problems that cannot be solved, as Einstein famously said, “from the same level of consciousness that created them.” Many contemporary practitioners have turned to the Dharma as a source of that higher consciousness. But traditionally, the path was described as the way to awaken from the dream of human life, not to improve it. The traditions saw that as futile. But today, we no longer see life as an endless cycle. _ We have an evolutionary view of ourselves and even of our spirituality. And we have seen the folly of “bypassing” our critical life challenges in an attempt to be “spiritual.” How does the wisdom and clarity of ancient Dharma have relevance and meaning in the midst of contemporary evolutionary challenges? How can spiritual insight and illumination empower us to more effectively meet the emerging challenges of our time? _ ABOUT THE PRESENTERSHokai Sobol is a longtime Buddhist practitioner, teacher and translator, as well as a penetrating student and critic of leading-edge spirituality. He brings an international perspective to these questions. (He lives in Croatia). He will be in dialogue with Terry Patten, a leading voice in the emerging Integral Spirituality movement, and co-author, with Ken Wilber, of Integral Life Practice: A 21st-Century Blueprint for Physical Health, Emotional Balance, Mental Clarity, and Spiritual Awakening.

Get An MBA Or Buy A Franchise?

Many college undergrads and recent grads are contemplating whether to obtain an MBA. While often viewed as a career accelerator, an MBA does require major commitments of money and time.Usually, there are four determining factors: cost, time involved, return on investment and job market. But, now there’s a fifth consideration: get an MBA or spend the same amount of money to purchase a franchise? To pay for an MBA, most people work part-time at low wages while enrolled, deplete their personal or parents’ savings, and obtain student loans that must be repaid. However, going the franchise route can provide a fast and lifetime income that often exceeds the income of those with MBAs.After graduation, with a degree in Business Administration, from the University of Denver in December 2008, 23-year-old Tanner White considered getting his master’s degree. He then weighed his options.“I’d spend the same amount of money pursuing a MBA as I would to become a businessowner,” said Tanner. “If I got my master’s degree it wouldn’t guarantee a job, especially in today’s job market. Plus, I most certainly would not be my own boss.”Tanner purchased a portion of the Denver College Hunks Hauling Junk in June of 2009 from Nathaniel Bruno, who was the sole owner, and is very pleased with his investment. “I don’t think that pursuing a MBA is a bad idea” said Tanner, “but for me taking control of my future rather than hoping for opportunities obtained through a master’s degree seemed like the best path.”According to Nick Friedman, president of College Hunks Hauling Junk, several of his franchise owners are recent college graduates, which is not the typical franchise owner profile.”Rather than spending $95,000 and two years getting an MBA, more and more people are using the money to open a franchise,” said Friedman. “And, in less than two years they own a cash-producing asset.”Friedman and his business partner, Omar Soliman, brought a clean-cut image to junk removal by recruiting college students to haul away customers’ unwanted items. The temporary summer gig started in 2005 has grown into a multi-truck, multi-million-dollar franchise operation with locations across the country.“Franchising allows people to go into business for themselves but not by themselves,” Friedman said. “It offers a much more secure method of entrepreneurship.” New franchisees get five days of training at “Junk University” in Tampa to learn every aspect of the business. The company focuses on branding, marketing, community involvement and recycling efforts.Just like college, parents can invest in their child’s future by helping fund the business.Tanner’s parents helped their son by co-signing the loan for the franchise. “This is a great business,” said Tanner. “It’s fun, you do a lot for the community and can make a great deal of money if you follow the franchise formula.”For more information: www.collegehunksblog.com

Save the Ta Ta's

We are really excited! Our oldest daughter is going on a bike ride! I’ll bet you’re less than impressed with that.. This is sort of a special bike ride though, you see, six months ago Suzanne, at age 47, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Five months ago she went through a very extensive double mastectomy. For the last four months she’s been going through six chemotherapy treatments, which of course claimed her hair, her eyelashes and eyebrows. But through the skill and dedication of the medical profession and her unlimited optimism and joy of life, next Sunday, August 30th, she will be riding in the Venus de Miles bike ride. And then the next day she starts six weeks of daily radiation treatments. Venus de Miles is the first Colorado women only bike ride. It’s a project of the Greenhouse Scholars Foundation which raises money to support high performing under resourced college students. It starts Sunday morning at 7 a.m., leaving from Prospect Park in Longmont, to Hygiene, to Lyons, to Jamestown and then back to Prospect Park. It can be a 35 mile, 50 mile or 65 mile ride. Suzanne of course has chosen the 65 mile ride. Being a big biker, Suzanne is in awe of Lance Armstrong and his horrific battle with testicular cancer. His efforts have raised millions for cancer research. That gave Suzanne the idea of putting together a sub group of riders for Venus de Miles who would ride for her cause , the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation (her type of cancer). I’ve always felt it somewhat ironic that a women who loses her breasts to cancer idolizes a man who nearly lost his testicles, but that’s cancer for you. Cancer hasn’t slowed this gal down. At last count there were 90 women signed up to ride as a Soozer’s Cruiser, all with her personally designed Jersey, with the motto, “Save the Ta Ta’s”. Additionally there will be another dozen or more ground support people wearing lime green (her favorite color) T shirts with the “Save the Ta Ta’s” legend. She has chosen as her “domestique” (assistant with honors or personal slave) her younger sister, Stephanie Busby of Lyons. Secretly, she confides that for just this one day, we should think of this as the Tour de Boulder County. And the winners won’t be wearing yellow jerseys down the Champs St. Vrain but will be all the women who win the cancer battle because of generous research donations. In her words it’s “if one person can make a difference, than together we can change the world”. We are so totally thankful to see her on that bike!!! . If you want to make a donation: TNBC Foundation, P.O. Hot Air Balloon Drops In!

2009_08_24_2984-balloon-land.jpg So after waking the kids, packing their lunches, and sending them off to school, it is a peaceful morning ... when I hear a "whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" from outside the open window. I realize it's a nearby hot-air balloon ... when they are close, you almost always hear them before you see them. I look to the West ... and it is coming right at my house ... and is very low. It drifts slightly to the South and he sets down in a skinny section of open space right behind my back yard - first time in the over 10 years I have lived here in Lafayette - bummer my kids had already left. alek P.S. I saw some nice pictures on MyTown from the airshow this weekend ... I missed it this year, but have some nifty pictures from last year's airshow at Rocky Mountain Airport.
