The Sharon Prize, a prestigious $5,000 annual grant celebrating and supporting women and non-binary artists in Colorado, has been awarded to Kristen Abbott for her innovative project, Tending | Belonging. Her project explores the cyclical nature of life—how we are connected and shaped by our encounters with beauty, loss, and longing. This immersive exhibition considers the garden as both metaphor and material: a site of care, change, and shared experience.

Kristen is a mixed media painter, drawing inspiration from the scenic landscapes of Boulder, Colorado where she resides. Guided by introspection and propelled by a sense of joyful experimentation, Abbott’s creative process spans a diverse array of mediums and materials. Her collaboration with nature rejuvenates her sense of wonder, continually drawing her back to the canvas in pursuit of capturing the enigmatic essence of Colorado’s landscape and the internal stillness it shares with us.

Kristen’s work is represented by Liz Lidgett Gallery and Midnight Gallery and is included in private, corporate, and hospital collections nationwide. Beyond her studio practice, she is passionate about fostering a creative community, hosting workshops, retreats, and gatherings at Schoolhouse Studios, a 1950’s schoolhouse she personally renovated in Boulder, Colorado.

“When I first read about the Sharon Prize, it felt too aligned not to apply. Receiving it has been both an honor and a catalyst—giving me greater freedom to create art that builds connection and community, and to hold spaces where artists of all backgrounds can gather and grow. I am grateful for the Sharon Prize jury’s belief in the power of art to connect us,” said Kristen Abbott.

Through large-scale cyanotypes, paintings, installations, photography, poetry, and interactive elements, Tending | Belonging invites viewers into a sensory journey through the seasons—winter, spring, summer, fall—each unfolding within its own room at Schoolhouse Studios. These distinct spaces mirror the inner landscapes we move through and will immerse attendees in themes of loss, dormancy, renewal, and abundance.

Tending | Belonging is a call to disarm through beauty—to break down barriers and create space for reflection and conversation. Together, these artists offer a space where art and nature converge to remind us that we are more connected than separate in our experience of what it means to be human.

The show features the work of Kristen Abbott as well as Colorado-based artists, Sara Sanderson, Natalie Pigliacampo, Cady Faus, and Lindsey Mazzaferro.

The Sharon Prize, established in honor of the late Sharon Riordan McAvoy, is an annual grant recognizing women and non-binary artists in Colorado who create work evoking the power of community and collective change. Over the past four years, they have received grant proposals from over 200 visual artists, singers, dancers, writers and filmmakers living and working in Colorado.

The opening reception for Tending | Belonging is Saturday, October 4th, from 5-8pm, at Schoolhouse Studios located at 4705 Baseline Road in Boulder, Colorado. Light refreshments will be served in the studio garden.

The goal of this book fair is to support local Boulder artists and art admirers.

BOULDER – The Barnes & Noble and Boulder Art Association Book Fair kicks off early on Saturday Nov. 22.  It’s the first time the BAA has participated in this event and hopes it will bring awareness to the plethora of local artists in various mediums that are part of the organization.

The free, open-to-the-public fair will be an all-day, family-centered event, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Barnes & Noble Boulder, 2999 Pearl St.

Conveniently timed just a week before Thanksgiving, the book fair will offer book-lovers, art-lovers, and cheesecake-lovers a chance to buy gifts and food items for the holidays, all benefiting a great cause.  There will be lots of activities to keep the whole family busy, including artist demos, kids’ crafts, art workshops, and art viewing.  BAA Artists will even be there to recommend their favorite products – and it’s easy to help benefit the BAA.  All attendees have to do is say the organization’s name at the book store or cafe register.

The BAA is also excited that the Barnes & Noble Café will sell whole Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes, the perfect Thanksgiving dessert, during the event.

For those who can’t attend the action-packed book fair at the store itself, Barnes & Noble will generously donate a portion of the profits of online sales for five days after the event, Nov. 23-28. For instructions on how to benefit the BAA through BarnesandNoble.com, please visit http://www.boulderartassociation.org/bookfair2014.html.

Historic building becomes pop-up art space

for March Loveland Art Studio Tour fundraiser

31040786075?profile=originalLoveland, Colorado – Like peanut butter and jelly, art and history just go together. And now there is a new opportunity for regional artists, history lovers and the community to bring them together again – not peanut butter and jelly, but art and community history – when the Loveland Art Studio Tour’s Open Hang at the Pulliam Building opens March 20 and 21, 2015. A VIP opening and reception will be held Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Open Hang Show is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Organized by the Loveland Art Studio Tour, the Open Hang is a way for area artists to share their work with the community and for art lovers to find pieces from local favorites or to discover new artists. “The Open Hang is a new opportunity for Loveland artists,” said Sheron Buchele Rowland, LAST Executive Director. “We are excited about being able to showcase local artists in this format as well as show off this incredible historic building.”

For a small fee, any interested artist can bring up to three pieces of artwork to display during the event. Any two-dimensional or three-dimensional media can be displayed during the event. Each artist is responsible for bringing their own “Command-style” hangers, pedestals or lights to display their pieces, as well as an artist’s statement for display.

Open Hang events are occurring throughout the world and began in 1978 when Walter Hopps created the Museum of Temporary Art in Washington, D.C. Hopps’ vision was that for 36 hours anyone could show anything in the gallery. These types of events occur on a regular basis everywhere from Berlin to Hong Kong and now in Loveland.

The event is a fundraiser for the Loveland Art Studio Tour, an annual event each October where local artists open their studios to the public. In addition to the art show, representatives of Restore Pulliam will be on hand Saturday to discuss the historic building’s future as well as its past.

Here are the important details for interested participants: Artist entry fees are $20 per item submitted, or three pieces for $50. Student artists qualify for reduced entry fees, $15 per item, or three pieces for $35. There is a limit of three works per artist participating in the show.  There will be a 65/35 percent commission split for participating artists, which can be reduced for a limited number who sign up to assist during the event. Unsold artwork must be picked up between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
