NEWS RELEASE: The Luvin Arms Gala is Almost Here!

For Immediate Release: August 30, 2022

Erie, Colorado - One of the most anticipated events of the year is just around the corner: the Luvin Arms 7th Annual Gala - Ahimsa in Bloom, held on Saturday, September 10th, from 4:00-8:00pm MST, both in-person and virtually.

The nonprofit Animal Sanctuary is honored to host this annual event on-property for the first time ever! Attendees will experience the magic of being surrounded by farmed animals, connecting with the heart of the Sanctuary’s essential work.

The Gala itinerary includes:

  • An open bar in the Big Barn featuring signature drinks specifically created in honor of the residents of Luvin Arms
  • Live entertainment by folk artist Jaime Drake, sponsored by Piante
  • A scrumptious plant-based four-course dinner by Three Leaf Catering
  • Live and silent auctions, including extraordinary works of art and unique experiences
  • A multimedia presentation, including a world-class cinematic experience featuring the Luvin Arms animal residents

All proceeds raised at the Gala will support the Sanctuary’s two-fold mission: to provide exceptional lifelong care for the residents of Luvin Arms, and to advocate for all farmed animals through humane education and outreach.

The theme of the hybrid event this year is Ahimsa in Bloom. Ahimsa - nonviolence toward all living beings - influences every choice at the Sanctuary. The theme reflects how the seeds of compassion planted by Luvin Arms over the last several years have now blossomed into countless collaborative acts of compassion across the globe.

One such collaboration involves the students of The Springs Continental Schools in India. The young children have recorded a beautiful song in conjunction with Luvin Arms called the Sounds of Ahimsa, which will premiere at the Gala. The song highlights the importance of taking care of animals, the planet, and each other.

“The seeds of Ahimsa blossom within our hearts when we embrace the sacredness of all life. At the 7th Annual Gala, we are celebrating the power of community to bring about positive change in the world.” - Shartrina White, Executive Director

I am involved with an organization called Nurturing Minds whose mission is to support and educate impoverished girls in Tanzania who would otherwise be on the street or living in squalid conditions with no chance for a better future.  Nurturing Minds supports the Sega Girls School, a residential secondary school that houses and educates 180 girls who have been hit with a  reall-life crisis (AIDS, starvation, the  death of a parent) that forces  them to withdraw from classes, usually before even completing elementary school.
For the past 6 years, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Nurturing Minds has organized a really fun event called  An African Evening where we raise funds to support critical needs at Sega , such as supplying beds, desks, clean water, a bus and solar power.  This year, we are trying to raise funds for teachers' salaries and to   provide scholarships for 10 girls to attend the Sega School for a year.
Please join me on Nov 15 at our annual African Evening fundraiser. You can purchase tickets here  http://events.readysetauction.com/nurturingminds/rmafricanevening

Fourteen Nepalese orphans in Mangalbare, Dharan may soon be living in a new dorm facility.  A University of Colorado graduate and Nepalese resident, Bikram Palikhey is leading the fundraising and a dormitory building project, as part of a campaign for social good.

The dormitory will benefit the 14 orphans, ages 5-14, living in the home of Sita Dewan.  Sita Dewan took children, many with special needs into her home out of goodwill, without any sponsors.  As her orphanage is not registered as a non-profit in Nepal, she does not receive the benefit of having major sponsors.  She has cared for the children by farming and animal husbandry within her small home.

The preliminary plans for the new dormitories have been designed by architect Bikash Palikhey, Bikram's brother.  The new dorm facility will allow separate rooms for boys and girls. It will also take the local landscape into consideration - the materials will be locally sourced, windows will take advantage of the area’s wind patterns for cross ventilation, the overhang will reduce moisture from building during the monsoon month, and the roof is designed to stay cool during the summer months with straw thatch over corrugated metal.

Bikram started his personal campaign for social good earlier this year, traveling across Nepal delivering random acts of kindness to the people he meet along the way, in the trip he called ‘The Great Nepalese Road Trip to Inspire Social Good’. The random acts of kindness were documented on a Facebook page he created for the trip, and ranged from school supplies for children to a doctor visit and medicine to treat an ailment.  Family, friends, and the Boulder Colorado Nepalese community helped financially back the random acts of kindness through donations, a silent auction, and a music event in February called “Almost Unplugged Concert for Nepal.”

Bikram was inspired to give back to his home country after returning to Nepal in 2011. After being away for fourteen years, during the start of the Maoist insurgency, he found the social landscape had changed drastically.  The Nepal from his childhood was a place where kindness came naturally. After the insurgency there was no trust among citizens.  Bikram explained that “I thought committing acts of kindness would send a positive message to all citizens; a message that will hopefully inspire people to reconnect with each other again.  Hence, I raised funds and started touring around Nepal doing just that.”

The dormitory build can only be completed if the $3000 of building costs can be covered by fundraising.  People who wish to make a contribution of any size can do so by visiting the youcaring.com fundraiser.  Funds must be raised by August 31st, 2014 in order to move forward with the building plans.

The goal of this book fair is to support local Boulder artists and art admirers.

BOULDER – The Barnes & Noble and Boulder Art Association Book Fair kicks off early on Saturday Nov. 22.  It’s the first time the BAA has participated in this event and hopes it will bring awareness to the plethora of local artists in various mediums that are part of the organization.

The free, open-to-the-public fair will be an all-day, family-centered event, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Barnes & Noble Boulder, 2999 Pearl St.

Conveniently timed just a week before Thanksgiving, the book fair will offer book-lovers, art-lovers, and cheesecake-lovers a chance to buy gifts and food items for the holidays, all benefiting a great cause.  There will be lots of activities to keep the whole family busy, including artist demos, kids’ crafts, art workshops, and art viewing.  BAA Artists will even be there to recommend their favorite products – and it’s easy to help benefit the BAA.  All attendees have to do is say the organization’s name at the book store or cafe register.

The BAA is also excited that the Barnes & Noble Café will sell whole Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes, the perfect Thanksgiving dessert, during the event.

For those who can’t attend the action-packed book fair at the store itself, Barnes & Noble will generously donate a portion of the profits of online sales for five days after the event, Nov. 23-28. For instructions on how to benefit the BAA through BarnesandNoble.com, please visit http://www.boulderartassociation.org/bookfair2014.html.

The Orphan’s Bridge Shoreline 5K

Two Longmont firefighters are trying to make life better for orphans.Jeff Moll and Jeff Peterson are career firefighters with the Longmont Fire Department. The two firefighters are organizing the third annual Orphan's Bridge Shoreline 5K to raise funds for orphans in need.

Moll, an avid runner himself, came up with the idea for the 5k race as a fundraiser.Moll has run several marathons and even a 50 mile mountain endurance race.He wanted to create a fun race where families could run or walk together and enjoy a great morning around the lake. All proceeds go to orphans in need.

Peterson, his wife Katie and a few family members founded Orphan's Bridge, an orphan relief effort, after a trip to central Mexico in 2007.The idea for the organization came while on a humanitarian trip near the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. The group spent three days at an orphanage working on the facilities and playing with the kids. "we warned ourselves not to become attached" Peterson said, but that was impossible. He continued "These bright energetic kids, through no fault of their own, live inside these four grey walls, malnourished and with little chance to ever improve their life.We just wanted to enrich their lives. We want to give them a chance at a successful life".

Orphan’s Bridge provides support for children’s centersin Longmont, Denver and in Mexico."We are looking forward to start working in Haiti in 2013" Peterson said. This race will help reach that goal. A trip to Haiti in 2011 was a life changing event for Peterson "we don't realize how wealthy we are here in the USA, I was able to visit families that lived in an 8 foot by 8 foot tin shed with no furniture or beds.I visited an orphanage where 12 boys slept on a rough concrete floor. They would roll out a rug at bed time and all curl up together to stay warm."Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in January of 2010. The orphan population grew from 300,000 to over a 1,000,000 in that disaster. Progress has been slow in Haiti and only 50 percent of promised aid has been delivered.

The main focus of Orphan's Bridge is education, facility improvements and basic needs. This year they are providing scholarships for students to continue their education, sponsoring a tutoring program to help students prepare for the new school year, plus providing basic needs for the homes such as food and clothing.Orphan’s Bridge hopes to expand their work to more orphanages in needy areas of the world.

Come join us on August 25 at 8:00.Run or walk this fun event located at picturesque McIntosh Lake in Longmont. Help us help kids. You can run or walk and if you want to help more you can collect donations for the cause.Participants can work alone or in groups to raise donations. The person or group that raises the most donations wins a Suite at the Pepsi Center for a Nuggets game or an Avalanche game. The suite holds 20 people and is valued at up to $4,000 dollars.
