When is College Worth the Cost?

Earlier this year, the St. Louis Federal Reserve published a study that concluded: “The promise of economic and financial advantages associated with postsecondary degrees remains only partially supported by the most recent data.”  What’s more is that Goldman Sachs found that 2010 graduates will have to work 8 years to break even.  If tuition continues to rise, 2050 graduates are projected to have to work 15  (until the age of 37) to break even. The study published by the St. Louis Federal reserve doesn’t discount the importance of college, a college education continues to present several lifelong advantages that we hope everyone is able to achieve such as a higher likelihood of sustaining a long-term partnership, the ability to earn higher wages and better overall physical health.  While these are all aspects of a healthy life, as a financial advisor, it is concerning that college graduates are continually having a harder time establishing a healthy financial base.

We all need the financial basics of a nest egg, retirement savings and the ability to purchase a home.  Each generation has their fair share of national and personal crises.  People who have an asset base are more likely to weather these storms without financial hardship (see chart below).  I’m not talking about an enormous amount of wealth, just a solid financial base that comes from the consistent ability to save money.    What this all tells me is that we need to reconsider the conversations that we are having with teens and young adults around the “promise of college” and their financial health.  When we look at it, college really is the first major financial decision that our teens make. It’s a good time to help them begin to look at how much they are paying for something and truly evaluate what they will get in return.

Helping our teens look realistically at what they want for themselves and their future, then encouraging them to move towards their dreams without creating an undue financial burden on themselves or their family, is probably one of the most important conversations we can have as they enter the college application process.    There are several steps towards starting this conversation, many of which are discussed in my TuitionWISE college planning seminar.  While I recommend attending our next webinar, here are a few points to get a family conversation started:

  • Review family finances so that, first and foremost, you understand where you are in terms of your own retirement and your emergency nest-egg.

  • Discuss any discrepancies between any contribution that the parent can offer and tuition levels. How will the discrepancies be handled?  What portion will the student be responsible for?

  • If the college turns out to be over your budget, encourage your teen to negotiate and see if the college will meet you with a better deal. Colleges want to fill their classrooms with talented students, don’t be afraid to see if they can help with an affordable tuition option that does not include loans.

  • Ask the university for specifics on employment rates and income levels of graduates for the program of interest. If your teen is undecided, assume an average income level for a liberal arts graduate.

  • Consider career testing or even a gap year internship for students who feel unsure about their goals.

  • Write out estimated post-college living expenses so that teens can see how loans might impact their ability to pay rent or save for a house.

  • If college is covered partially or 100% by family savings, discuss withdrawal strategies with a financial planner. In some instances, withdrawal strategies could save money.

  • Encourage your teen to find appropriate employment within the first two years of college graduation. Those who are underemployed in the first year after graduation, tend to stay underemployed the entirety of their careers.

  • If your teen is not interested in college, encourage them to explore additional options. Many trades pay more than a student will earn after a four-year degree.

The rising cost of tuition, increased concerns around unskilled graduates and the student loan crises have all made it clear that the landscape of college is long past due for a change.  The pandemic just might give that final push towards a newer, more affordable, outcomes-based system.  Until that happens, I like to encourage people to be ahead of the game:  evaluate to ensure that the tuition makes financial sense and help your teen understand the importance of choosing a college that supports their financial future.

Found: Historical Artifact

A few weeks ago, our design-build company, Melton Design Build, was demoing at a job site in the Chautauqua neighborhood in Boulder. As the crew was excavating, we found a plaque buried on the property.

31040799065?profile=original

Rev. Albert Chittenden of Connecticut, died March 1878, aged 66 years.

Upon further research, a crew member found an image depicting a gravestone missing an insert shaped precisely like this plaque. The grave is located in the 9th street cemetery in Boulder. Our crew imagines it was removed as a prank many years ago. Our team was so interested in when and why this took place. We were hopeful that we could take the right steps to reunited the plaque to the grave.

31040799471?profile=original

A member of the Melton construction crew took an afternoon to look for this plot and see the site's current condition. He found the grave based on the backdrop of the mountains in the photo. He found the plot with a replacement board in place of the Reverand's name.

The Project Manager contacted a Boulder historian through the City to help reunite this plaque to its original home. The City is so excited to return the plaque to the Reverand's gravestone finally.

The Melton crew, along with the City of Boulder will be reuniting the Reverand's plaque to his grave on the 9th street cemetery in a few weeks. We were happy to be able to restore a small piece of Boulder history.

Reunited!

31040796493?profile=originalFour years ago somebody took three gnomes off my front porch. For weeks I put out humorous poster signs, imploring the gnomes to stop being AWOL and return home. The last sign stated “Spring Break is over; time for the gnomes to return home”. Several nights ago somebody rang our doorbell and fled. We found two of the gnomes on the porch along with an envelope containing an apology and enough money to cover the replacement of the missing third gnome. Since people still ask us if the gnomes ever reappeared, I decided to create another poster sign to celebrate their return.

Boulder, CO – Located in the Northeast area of Boulder, Velo Condos, is a new neighborhood of 70 residences conveniently located near Cottonwood, Goose Creek, and Wonderland Creek Bike Paths, the 208 RTD bus route, and Foothills Parkway.  With the first homes ready in 2021, locally owned and operated Denver area general contractor, DIRC Homes, is excited about this attainable new condo building.  The first condos released will have one-bedroom units priced as low as $410,000. Fourteen of the residences are permanently affordable, as required by the city of Boulder, and income restrictions will apply.

“I am so excited to be part of bringing an innovative and affordable housing option to the Boulder market, and to introduce our company vision, “to be the company of choice for all stakeholders by redefining home construction” to the market. This vision helps us to embrace the community and is in alignment with our core values,” said president of DIRC Homes, Randy Henckel, adding, “Being part of this significant project in the Boulder community allows us to further our goals and partner with likeminded firms, like Thistle, to deliver quality and affordable housing by creating vibrant communities.”

Thistle, a Boulder based non-profit since 1986, is developing the community as part of their commitment to affordable housing. Velo Condos is Thistle’s sixth mixed-income community, offering both permanently affordable and market rate ownership homes. “We are excited to work with DIRC, whose construction expertise will help keep the final sales prices below what is presently seen in the market for homes of this quality, and size,“ said Mary Duvall, Thistle CEO.

All residences come with private garages, some with 2-car tandems or oversized garages and affordable units come with carports; all homes have generous indoor storage as well. Every home has either a spacious balcony, outdoor patio and/or enclosed yard with abundant windows to take in the surroundings. There is a community area for parties, co-working, coffee time, bike repair and washing, as well as a pet washing station. Generous landscaping surrounds the site, and the homes will have high-quality finishes. Every residence meets stringent energy-efficiency requirements.

There are numerous breweries, cafes, and shops within biking distance. The Valmont Bike Park, the Valmont Disc Golf Course, and the Valmont Dog Park are neighborhood amenities. Velo Condos have unparalleled views of the Flatirons and the Front Range.  Featuring modern one, two and 3-bedrooms units, Velo Condos’ twelve unique floorplans range from 706 to 1,450 square feet plus five unique live-work units, each offering an additional 500 to 700 square feet of connected commercial workspace. Preliminary prices beginning at $410,000 for the 1-bedroom, 1-bath condos and $561,500 for the 2-bedroom, 2-bath condos. All condos come with private garages ranging from 1-car to 2-car tandems or with carports. Floor plans offer both 1-level & 2-story options with either private balconies or enclosed yards.

Said Henckel, “Finding another community in this area that will offer the amenities and lifestyle access that is planned for Velo condos will be challenging.  We are proud to be a key partner in delivering this project and look forward to an ongoing relationship with the various team members.”

Pre-sales for Velo Condos are now happening! Estimated completion of the first residences is as soon as Spring of 2021. For more information, contact Deanna Franco, Broker Owner, 8030 Realty at (720) 422-5131, or explore online at www.VeloCondos.com.

In celebration of Religious Harmony week, the Church of Scientology of Colorado’s Volunteer Ministers recently hosted a round table, “Building Bridges Across Boundaries.” The discussion revolved around the problem of the great need for dialogue among different faiths and religions to enhance mutual understand, harmony, and cooperation among people.

One of the best way to build bridges of understanding is to work together, and the group announced it would host its first monthly “Interfaith Community Cleanup” on Saturday, May 16.

The Volunteer Ministers also welcomed the newest ordained Scientology Minister, Shaun Orthmann. Reverend Orthmann will spearhead the cleanup, recognizing that people of all faiths want a safer, cleaner environment.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers program was launched over thirty years ago by an appeal by Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard. “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”

Scientology Volunteer Ministers recognize that there is no greater joy in life than being able to provide effective help and make a difference in someone’s life. Sometimes that help comes in the form of making the place we live safe and pleasant.

Wings for Bonnie

Steve and Rich, long-time residents of Dallas, Texas, loved their dogs. All 5 of their dogs, ranging in age from 3 to 14 years old, were from rescues, shelters, or the streets of Dallas. Sadly and unexpectedly, however, Rich passed away, and then Steve passed away in December 2019. Their sudden and unexpected passing left their 5 dogs with no family, no home, and nowhere to go.

Amidst the sadness and tragedy, Rich’s brother, Dan, stepped in to try to find homes for all 5 dogs. He contacted dozens of shelters and rescues in Texas and posted their stories on social media. But it’s not easy to find homes for adult medium-large-sized dogs in Texas. Fortunately, friends and family adopted 4 of the dogs... Steve’s brother adopted Clyde, a 3-year-old deaf sharpei-cross; a friend adopted Parker and Spring, 2 senior pitbull-crosses; and Dr. Elena Contreras (veterinarian in Colorado) adopted Nolan, a 14-year-old border-collie-cross and Rich’s “favorite.” Nolan flew into Colorado in style on a private jet plane! (compliments of a donated flight from one of Dan’s friends!)

But there was still 1 dog remaining that needed a home.... Bonnie, a 3-year-old blue-heeler/herding dog-cross. But again thanks to Dan, after a long search and wait, Bonnie will be flying in style on a “Pilots and Paws” flight arranged by the non-profit “Flying Shepherd Ranch” to Colorado on Sunday, March 1st. Bonnie will be picked up at the Front Range Airport in Watkins, Colorado. And... there will also be a homecoming surprise waiting for Bonnie at the airport... Bonnie’s ol’ buddy, Nolan will be there to greet her (accompanied by Dr. Contreras)! Bonnie will then spend some days reuniting with Nolan and getting adjusted to Colorado life. She then already has a spot waiting for her at Humane Society of Boulder Valley. (HSBV has a 92% live release rate!) Bonnie will be sitting pretty and waiting to find her new forever family and home at HSBV soon! If you’re interested in adopting Bonnie before she arrives at HSBV, you can contact Dr. Contreras at happitarianvet@gmail.com.

I'd also love to get some media coverage of Bonnie's arrival and reunion with Nolan - if any media outlets are interested?!31040795696?profile=original

Moxie Exchange launches inclusion app

First-of-its-kind app empowers employees

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Oct. 23, 2019) – There are some things in life that everyone wants: health, happiness and the feeling of being included. Inclusion is more than just a popular buzzword in the HR industry; it is a business gap that once filled is proven to drive reputation, retention and revenues.

Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is a challenge. Fortunately, Moxie Exchange is here to help with the first-of-its-kind Everyday Inclusion App, just launched at the HR Tech Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

The app is a tool for employees and employers alike. It gives employees a safe place to get their diversity and inclusion questions answered and provides the resources they need -- at their fingertips and in real-time. Scalable and measurable, the app fulfills an HR department need by leveraging tech addiction for good. Disrupting traditional training models, the app moves away from one-and-done training to making inclusion a daily habit.

“We know that real inclusion and belonging happens in the day-to-day interaction people have at work,” Head Moxie Maureen Berkner Boyt said. “If people continue to look to HR to ‘fix’ the issue, nothing is going to change. And what’s supposed to happen after training is done, or when someone from HR isn’t in the room to answer a tough question about a diversity issue? We built this app to give every single person the tools and inclusion resources they need, right when they need them. You can search by keywords, get a daily inclusion tip, educate yourself - in real-time, confidentially, right from your phone. The app gives people the knowledge and tools to be inclusive, every day.”

Working with Ground Floor Companies DISH, a Fortune 250 company, and Vungle, an innovative San Francisco technology company, Moxie Exchange is empowering employees across the U.S.

“Like many companies, we’re evolving and growing in our ability to tap into all of the unique backgrounds, experiences and talents that our employees offer,” said Dave Scott, DISH Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “We’re excited to be one of the first companies to partner with Moxie Exchange on the Everyday Inclusion App. We want DISH team members to have all of the resources and tools they need to be inclusive, so this app was a natural fit.”

“At Vungle, we've built processes to better open up our candidate pool and remove bias from our hiring and our promotion process. We have over 30 nationalities in our company and we are proud of this!” said Steph Douglass, Vungle Vice President of People. “This diversity makes our teams stronger and smarter. But just as importantly, we need to make sure that we have an environment that is inclusive, that welcomes people who have the skills and values to do the work and also come from a variety of backgrounds. Adding the Everyday Inclusion App as a daily tool for our teams is one more way we can open up the conversation even more around diversity and what it means to be an inclusive environment.”

Everyday Inclusion provides real-time data that allows employers to scale best practices and create an inclusive, thriving workplace. The app takes the company’s pulse by using key inclusion metrics gathered through a series of daily inclusions, insights, exercises and quizzes that are then delivered in a dashboard to administrators.

For employees, the app boosts belonging by providing education, inspiration and tangible actions, including what to say when, identifying unconscious bias, a dictionary and language guide and calendar, inclusion interviews and more.

The mission of Moxie Exchange is to disrupt unconscious bias and create an inclusive workplace where talent can thrive. For more information, visit TheMoxieExchange.com.

The Denver chapter of the Drug-Free World Foundation travelled for the second year to the Northern Colorado (NOCO) Emergency Preparedness and Family Safety Expo.  The Drug-Free World mission is to everyone—kids and adults—learn the truth about drug use and abuse so they can make the better choice and not take drugs.

The NOCO event is a joint effort between Larimer and Weld Counties and provides the public with a variety of public safety services, ranging from emergency preparedness  to life-safety classes.

Foundation for a Drug-Free World provides those attending with effective ways to talk to their kid about drugs. Sometimes it’s a concerned grandparent, an aunt or uncle, parents, and many times teachers, who are concerned about the alarming increase in vaping, and how that may lead to the use and abuse of other drugs.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a non-profit, international drug education program proudly sponsored by the Church of Scientology and Scientologists all over the world. For the Church’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard, noted the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric, stating: “Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs.”

Kids who visit the Foundation’s booth voluntarily take the drug-free pledge, where they promise to learn the truth about drugs and promote the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle with their friends.  Foundation for a Drug-Free World spends many weekends during the late spring, summer, and early fall at events like the NOCO Emergency Preparedness and Family  Safety Expo, and this year over 270 students signed the pledge to remain drug-free.

Imagine you’re driving along your favorite country road when your unsuspecting windshield is assaulted by a stray pebble.  Your windshield is left with a pesky stone chip etched in its glass. This scenario is a common one, with an often-simple solution, windshield repair.  Depending on the type of damage and the extent of the damage incurred, windshield repair may be a cost saving solution to total repair.

There are generally two types of damage created by debris on the road, rock chips or cracks.  Rock chips are generally small shatters created by the impact of various types of road debris.  A crack in the windshield is a different kind of damage consisting of a prominent line of separation.  This generally stems from the point of impact.

Understanding the Specifics of Rock Chips

Rock chips can be categorized into four separate categories based upon the manifestation of the shatter.  Rock chips dubbed the bulls eye or partial bulls eye is characterized by a damaged area surrounded by a separate circular layer of glass.  It gives the appearance of a bulls eye as the outer area is darker surrounded by the middle point of impact.  This is the type of rock chip most frequently seen by service centers.  It can be easily repaired providing the chip does not exceed a diameter larger than one inch.  Another type of chip is the star chip which manifests as multiple legs coming out from the center of the point of impact.  This chip can be repaired if the entirety of the damage is no more than 3 inches.  Other possible chips include the combination chip which derives its name from its multiple characteristics.  These chips can include a star within a bulls eye, short crack, or long cracks stemming from the point of impact.  These are also eligible for repair providing the totality of the damage is not more than 2 inches.  Lastly, it is possible to obtain a surface pit in your windshield.  This is merely a small nick that appears in your windshield due to normal wear and tear.  This damage will not damage the inner, plastic layer and can be repaired if the area is at least 1/8 inch in diameter.

Understanding Windshield Cracks

A windshield crack measuring 6 inches or less is referred to as a short crack, whereas a long crack is more than 6 inches in length.  Any crack reaching to the edge of the windshield is dubbed an edge crack, while a crack that does not reach the edge is called a floater crack.  The final type of windshield crack, a stress crack, is developed from an edge with no recognizable point of impact.  Typically, all five types are eligible for repair if they do not exceed 12 inches.  This excludes stress or edge cracks that crossover more than one edge.

Don’t Let a Small Problem Become a Nightmare

It is easy to procrastinate on a repair but waiting could cause the crack to become worse.  Simple conditions such as a hot summer or cold winter day could exacerbate the crack.  Don’t put off or overlook this necessary repair or you could end up costing yourself extra money for a total windshield replacement when a simple windshield repair would’ve sufficed had it not been left go.

While not all chips and cracks will be eligible for repair, a large majority will.  It is possible to improve the appearance of the crack between 60 and 99 percent.  Appearance aside, a job done correctly will restore 100% of the strength of your windshield after completion.  Speak to a skilled windshield repair specialist to answer any questions or concerns regarding your windshield damage!
