Wolf Rescued from Pipe

Teamwork credited with wolf rescue. On the side of a steep slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, rescuers worked to successfully free a wolf with its head trapped in a heavy steep pipe. Members of the Boulder Emergency Squad, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder County Parks and Open Space, and Boulder County Sheriff's Department Animal Control responded and rescued the wolf with the help of a local veterinarian. (Boulder, Colorado). January 27, 2010 -- Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. along with other agencies, rescued a wolf which had gotten its head stuck in a steel pipe. With medical care provided by a veterinarian, the pipe was carefully cut from around the animals head. The several hour ordeal left the wolf "...in fine condition with only some minor cuts & scrapes", according to Veterinarian Dr. Christopher Blum, VMD of Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic in Golden, Colorado. While playing, the wolf-hybrid had gotten her head stuck in a 6 inch diameter, half-inch thick, eight foot long steel pipe and had evidently been unseen for a few hours. Coal Creek Fire cut the pipe to about one foot long which made the wolf and pipe portable. But, the head was still stuck and the animal was obviously stressed. The problem was metal welded inside the pipe was trapping the wolf's head. "From the moment the wolf was brought to the clinic until it was freed, all of us melded together into a cohesive team, that made the difference", said Blum. The animal control officer agrees. "Without the assistance of Deputy Bryarly, Officer Spensieri, Coal Creek Fire Department, Boulder Emergency Squad and Table Mountain Veterinary Clinic, this wolf would have died, no question," said Brandy J. Perkins, Animal Control Officer at Boulder County. The scene was on the side of a steep hill on property where a local homeowner raises wolf-hybrids. With the need for sedation. dark approaching and far from an ideal location, the wolf was transported 20 miles to a clinic, its head still stuck in the very heavy chunk of pipe.

After a quick check by the doctor, it was apparent that the wolf was dehydrated and stressed. IVs were started and vital signs monitored as the team set up outside in the parking lot with the BES emergency lighting. The 'patient' was monitored as the rescuers used a side grinder to slowly cut away enough of the metal to get the head out. "The 'operation' was a success", said Chief Andrew Moschetti after the wolf was cleared from the metal pipe. "I am so thankful to everyone who assisted in this rescue. It is so nice to know that BES is always there when we ask for them. They [B.E.S.] provide the equipment and support we need without ever questioning it's for an "animal". These [rescuers] are great and deserve to be recognized for all the good they do!" said Perkins. * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * About Boulder Emergency Squad: B.E.S. is an all volunteer, non-profit 501c.3 technical rescue team serving the County of Boulder, Colorado. It’s estimated that one-third of Americans made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight this year. Though these dieting individuals may have healthy intentions, they could be putting themselves at risk for an eating disorder, warns Eating Recovery Center (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com), a licensed and Joint Commission accredited behavioral hospital providing comprehensive treatment and sustainable recovery for eating disorders. “For individuals with a genetic predisposition for an eating disorder, a diet can quickly spiral out of control and trigger disordered eating,” said Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, co-founder and medical director of Eating Recovery Center. “It’s important for families to be aware of eating disorder warning signs and step in when they believe their loved one has a problem.” The following 10 signs may indicate that a dieting loved one is developing an eating disorder: 1. Dramatic weight loss 2. Refusal to eat certain foods 3. Evidence of binge-eating or purging behaviors 4. Frequent comments about feeling “fat” or overweight despite weight loss 5. Anxiety about gaining weight or being “fat” 6. Denial of hunger 7. Development of food rituals, such as eating foods in a certain order or rearranging food on a plate 8. Withdrawal from usual friends and activities 9. Excessive, rigid exercise regimen despite weather, fatigue, illness or injury 10. Behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting or control of food are primary concerns “If your loved one’s diet takes a turn for the worse, discuss your concerns openly and honestly in a caring, supportive way,” said Weiner. “Encourage your friend or family member to explore these concerns with a counselor, doctor, nutritionist or other qualified professional who is knowledgeable about eating disorders.” For guidance related to eating disorder treatment options, visit www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com. With Colorado legislators set to convene the sixty-seventh General Assembly, a new coalition—the Sensible Patient and Provider Coalition (SPPC)—has formed to lead the fight for responsible regulation of medical marijuana dispensaries, growers and caregivers. The coalition, made up of Colorado’s leading medical marijuana organizations, represents the middle ground in the debate over regulation of medical marijuana. With its mix of business owners, caregivers and patients, SPPC supports statewide medical marijuana rules that promote public safety, give local government key decision-making control, ensure patients have safe access to dispensaries and caregivers, and provide state and local governments with adequate taxes and fees to regulate and enforce medical marijuana regulations. “The voters of Colorado support sensible, responsible regulation of the medical marijuana industry, and the majority of legislators recognize that,” said Brian Vicente, co-chair of the Sensible Patient and Provider Coalition. “It’s critical we come to consensus on this issue and then move on to other important issues that affect Coloradans.” Coalition members include: • Sensible Colorado, www.sensiblecolorado.org, a group of Colorado professionals and parents formed to research, educate, and advocate for effective drug policy. • Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation, www.commr.org, a coalition of medical marijuana patients and providers formed to establish criteria for the regulation of medical marijuana in order to make a positive difference in people’s lives. • Colorado Patients and Providers Coalition (CPPC), www.cppc-cog.org, a homegrown Colorado organization acting for the betterment of our local community and to aid in creation of legislation affecting fair regulation and to keep local business Colorado Owned & Grown (COG). • Dispensary Owner’s Coalition, www.dispensaryownersco.com, a group of Denver-area medical marijuana dispensary owners and caregivers providing services to patients throughout the region. SPPC seeks regulation that aligns with voter sentiment. A recent poll by Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation, a SPPC coalition member, showed that Colorado voters overwhelmingly favor establishing state-licensed marijuana dispensaries for persons who are suffering from debilitating medical conditions. By a margin of 2-to-1, 64 percent of voters said they would approve proposals that would establish state-licensed marijuana dispensaries to cultivate and provide marijuana to patients with doctors’ recommendations. SPPC members are opposed to proposals which seek to limit medical marijuana caregivers to five patients, as limiting caregivers to only a few patients will cause an explosion in the number of small-scale grow operations as larger operations are forced to close. That leaves police and local fire departments in the unenviable position of monitoring literally thousands of small grows in every corner of the state. As more patients are prescribed medical marijuana, more neighborhood-based caregivers will be servicing patients—potentially in someone’s backyard. “The recent five to one proposals are wolves in sheep’s clothing that will put public safety at risk and would be virtually impossible to regulate,” said SPPC co-chair Matt Brown. “These plan will also require an army of new government regulators and that is something the state can ill-afford in this economic recession.”

Colorado students looking for an alternative have a new path to graduation with the launch of Provost Academy Colorado. Provost Academy Colorado is a new tuition free public online high school that delivers personalized learning plans to prepare students for college and the workforce. Unlike other online schools, Provost Academy has a robust offering of courses, developed in collaboration with Stanford University, that are taught by professional educators. The institution is also backed by EdisonLearning, the nation’s largest partner to public school districts and communities nationwide including here in Colorado, who is responsible for educating more than 1 million students. “Colorado high school students deserve alternative high-quality educational opportunities that get them to graduation, whether they are an overachieving student seeking a greater challenge, an underperforming student needing remediation or a student balancing school with work, sports, health or another of life’s challenges,” said Jeffrey Popiel, President & CEO of Geotech Environmental Equipment in Denver and chairman of the Provost Academy Colorado board. “Provost Academy’s pro-learning, pro-student, pro-success focus will help all of these students achieve their goals.” As a new state-authorized public online school, Provost Academy Colorado is free of charge to residents of Colorado. Provost Academy students work toward their regular public high school diploma - recognized by the state, colleges and employers - as they would in a traditional school, but in the convenient, safe environment of their own home through computer-based educational programs. At Provost Academy, students work with an advisor to personalize learning plans that are adapted to meet their schedule and specific academic needs. The school offers more than 100 highly engaging online classes, including A.P. and honors courses with a particular emphasis on high demand subjects, such as science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The school also provides each student with a free computer and internet access while they are enrolled in the school. A big point of difference in Provost Academy’s online learning programs compared to others is Provost Academy’s proprietary modular curriculum design, which was developed with Dr. Paul Kim, Assistant Dean of Stanford University’s School of Education. Courses can be customized to fit a student’s individual needs, with content based on testing and discussions with academic advisors and instructors. Further, Provost provides personal home pages so parents and students can easily monitor learning progress, assignments, and grades at a glance. For those needing additional help, Provost Academy also offers on-demand tutors that keep students on track and on pace for progress. “Online learning goes beyond the computer and the internet connection to bring students, parents and educators together in a community that is focused to drive academic success,” said Jeff Wahl, President & CEO of EdisonLearning. “Our organization has been a leader in new and innovative approaches to learning, and we welcome the opportunity to provide parents a new choice for their children’s educational future at Provost Academy Colorado.” Classes will begin this August, but parents can enroll students in grades nine through twelve now. Enrollment information can be found online at www.co.provostacademy.com or by phone at 888.472.2656.

The Faces of Medical Marijuana

They live with cancer, multiple sclerosis, severe digestive and neurological disorders, constant pain and other devastating conditions. For some, allergies prohibit traditional painkillers. For others, traditional western medicine has had no impact – or worse – has actually exacerbated their condition. For each, medical marijuana gives them back their life. They are the faces of medical marijuana. Whether serving as a painkiller, muscle relaxer, appetite stimulator, psychological aid or symptom alleviator, medical marijuana enables its patients to experience a quality of life they never thought they would have. Responsible regulation of medical marijuana will ensure that these patients continue to receive safe, responsible access to and use of this lifesaving treatment. Here are their stories. SHARON BROWN: Sharon Brown, a part time receptionist, has suffered from a variety of autoimmune disorders since 1993. Her platelets are so low that her blood will not clot, eating is a challenge and she struggles with rheumatoid arthritis. "I'm really kind of wasting away. My body is breaking down" she said. Medical marijuana has helped her fight ongoing pain and rebuild her blood platelet count. “Without medical marijuana, I would not have any quality of life.” (Video Coming Soon) ANNIE NOEL: Annie Noel, a former truck driver, was severely injured in a major accident. “They sent the coroner out to scrape me off the road,” she said, and later her doctor told her she would never walk again. But Annie went through intense rehabilitation and never gave up. Today, she can walk and is an active member of her church and her community. “The one thing that helps my pain more than anything else is medical marijuana.” Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3Vlv-bijdk to view Annie’s testimonial. RAY MERRIWEATHER: Ray Merriweather has suffered from the onset of multiple sclerosis since 2001. His symptoms include severe weakness, sensory loss, gate difficulties, severe pain, and lesions on his spinal cord and in his brain. And because he suffers from MS – a disease with no cure – his symptoms progressively worsen. Thanks to medical marijuana, Brian has continued to speak and move normally, despite his brain lesions and severe pain. He even mountain bikes and works out regularly. "The benefits that I get from it are fascinating. I get to live a normal life," he said. (Video Coming Soon) JANNA HARRISON: Before Janna Hudson received her medical marijuana license in June 2009, severe digestive and neurological issues led to an ongoing struggle with extreme pain, hernias and muscle spasms. Lack of hunger and inability to swallow dropped her weight to a deadly 98 pounds. And a series of surgeries coupled with an allergy to opiates such as morphine, ibuprofen and codeine have compounded her struggle. “Medical marijuana is all I have." she said. Since using medical marijuana, Janna is able to eat and can enjoy a life free of the extreme pain she has dealt with since birth. Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tawPFMJKC2Y&feature=related to view Janna’s testimonial. DILLON PRICE: Dillon Price is 15 years old and suffers from Lyme disease. From the onset of this disease, Dillon has lost 60 pounds and was unable to gain any weight or maintain his appetite through traditional medications. This has recently changed for Dillon thanks to medical marijuana. He has an appetite, almost no nauesa, and is now able to take any additional medications besides medical marijuana. The pain associated with Lyme disease has subsided and Dillon is able to lead the life a 15-year-old boy should be leading. Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEaH1PwUjC8&feature=related to view Dillon’s testimonial. WILLIAM CHENGALIS: William Chengalis suffers from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain in his hand from falling off a ladder, hepatitis C and bipolar disorder. The string of traditional medicines William maintained for the past five years were slowing working to destroy his liver. But now he has the option to use medical marijuana and piece by piece his life is returning to what it was prior to five year ago. “I’m not taking a narcotic and to me that’s important,” explains William. (Video Coming Soon) CONNIE CANTRELL: Connie suffers from chronic pain due to a car accident, which tore the muscle in her upper left arm and having an 11 pound tumor removed from her torso. Not your typical medical marijuana patient, Connie is well past her mid-twenties and deals with constant pain every day. Medical marijuana has helped ease the tension and relax enough to get some sleep to make it through the following day. Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1NKfQGoHfI to view Connie’s testimonial.

Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation, the leading coalition of medical marijuana patients, providers and growers supporting responsible regulation of medical marijuana, today voiced its support for the ruling by District Judge Christopher Cross that barred the city of Centennial, Colo., from closing a medical marijuana dispensary. In his ruling, Judge Cross said the city of Centennial cannot use “the potential violation of federal law to order a business legally operating under our state constitution to cease and desist,” and that the laws regulating dispensaries are not clear. “Judge Cross’s decision underscores the need for statewide rules that promote public safety, provide local control and provide patients with safe access to dispensaries and caregivers,” said Matt Brown, executive director of Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation. “Both citizens and lawmakers want reasonable regulations that provide safe, responsible access to and use of medical marijuana.” Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation is working with lawmakers to develop medical marijuana regulations. The coalition’s guidelines support medical marijuana business regulations that set uniform state standards and provide for local control to ensure public input. The guidelines also incorporate best practices within existing regulatory structures and provide state and local governments with adequate taxes and fees. The Need for Responsible Regulation: In 2000, Colorado voters passed Amendment 20, a constitutional amendment authorizing the use of medical marijuana by persons who are suffering from debilitating medical conditions. The amendment also creates exemptions to Colorado criminal law for medical marijuana patients and their primary caregivers. One of the areas of Amendment 20 needing further clarity is the role of medical marijuana dispensaries. Legislation to regulate the medical marijuana dispensary industry is expected to be introduced during the 2010 session of the Colorado General Assembly. A recent poll showed that Colorado voters overwhelmingly favor establishing state-licensed marijuana dispensaries for persons who are suffering from debilitating medical conditions. By a margin of 2-to-1, 64 percent of voters said they would approve proposals that would establish state-licensed marijuana dispensaries to cultivate and provide marijuana to patients with doctors’ recommendations. About Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation Coloradans for Medical Marijuana Regulation is a coalition of medical marijuana patients and providers supporting responsible regulation of medical marijuana. Formed in 2009, the coalition is actively engaged with Colorado legislators and law enforcement officers to establish criteria for the regulation of medical marijuana in order to make a positive difference in people’s lives. Vegan Weight Loss Course benefits:Studies have shown that Vegans are far less likely to become obese than meat eaters. In Western countries, people who have tried Vegan Weight Loss Recipes have lower blood cholesterol and body mass index. People on a vegan weight loss diet enjoy several other health benefits. They have a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other conditions linked to excess weight. Why? Because vegetables have fewer calories, less fat, and more nutrients compared to processed meats. Celebrities who went vegetarian showed dramatic weight loss, and those who tried Vegan Diet Food for even a few days felt generally healthier. So why are vegetables so effective for weight loss? It’s mostly because meat and animal products contain fewer preservatives, calories and saturated fats—the primary causes of unhealthy weight gain. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, which eliminate the free radicals that cause cell death and lead to disease. Fruits and vegetables are also rich in fiber and juice, which makes them more filling. A vegan weight loss diet plan doesn’t require you to starve yourself—you can eat normal servings and still get fewer calories than you would from a meat-based meal

A Comfortable And Scientific Keyboard Will Popular

1 (Credit:Battery News)As anyone that spends eight hours or more in front of a computer knows, a proper ergonomic peripheral set up is crucial to enjoying a comfortable work day and alleviating arthritic pain down the road. Smartfish and Hitachi Maxell have partnered up and announced what they claim to be the next generation of ergonomic peripherals, starting with the ErgoMotion keyboard-- a creative input device that shifts angles to accommodate the ever-changing hand positions users experience throughout the day.

You might need some time to adjust to the ErgoMotion Keyboard's uniquely curvy design, there's no denying its ability to alleviate stress on the wrists and fingertips for A1175 battery, A1079 battery. Over time, the keyboard uses onboard intelligence to monitor the style and frequency of your typing and develops a system to automatically change position, preventing repetitive injury and encouraging circulation to your digits as your work.

It certainly seems that 2010 will be filled with entries in the tablet PC market, though, providing users with a variety of options for flat-panel, touch-screen, Web-enabled devices to replace more cumbersome netbooks and notebooks for Sony-VGP-BPS2A battery .As far as the touchscreen, no big improvements over any other Android 1.5 device; typing is still a bit clunky, but navigation is on par with the rest of the pack. No confirmation on carrier yet, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it land on AT&T later this year.

It remains to be seen if the Apple "iSlate" or Microsoft "Courier will actually materialize for Sony-VGP-BPS8 battery , but HP, Dell, Lenovo, Fusion Garage, and a plethora of other manufacturers are all lining up a diverse array of tablet PC's to release this year. The Smartfish ErgoMotion Keyboard will be available for purchase in March 2010 for $150. More pictures of the device after the jump.

The challenge will be to clearly define to consumers and businesses why they should invest in tablets vs. netbooks or notebooks, differentiate the devices from glorified Kindle or iPod Touch devices like VGP-BPS2A, and deliver them at a reasonable price in relation to the functionality they provide.

More than half of dieters end up heavier than before, yet dieting remains one of America’s most popular New Year’s resolutions. Eating Recovery Center (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com), a licensed and Joint Commission accredited behavioral hospital providing comprehensive treatment and sustainable recovery for eating disorders, encourages Americans to instead make resolutions focused on healthy lifestyle changes. “While 95 percent of diets fail, lifestyle changes have a significantly higher success rate,” explains Dr. Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, co-founder and medical director of Eating Recovery Center. “Instead of resolving to diet in 2010, focus on living a balanced lifestyle complete with moderate exercise and well-balanced meals.” In 2010, Eating Recovery Center encourages considering one or more of these lifestyle changes as a healthy, empowering alternative to dieting: • Set goals that are “body movement” based. Join a yoga class for relaxation, a dance class for fun or an aerobics class because it makes you feel good. • Remove “good food, bad food” talk from your vocabulary. Remember it’s all about moderation. • Surround yourself with people who have healthy relationships with their bodies, food and weight. • Stop comparing yourself to others. Being unique is what makes our world a wonderful place! • Resolve to help others feel better about themselves as well. Offer a friend or family member a heartfelt non body focused compliment every day. “Diets don’t work. They can also be dangerous,” explains Weiner. “For an individual genetically predisposed to an eating disorder, a New Year’s resolution diet can spiral into disordered eating.” For more information about body image and eating disorders, please visit www.EatingRecoveryCenter.com.
