First Oval Office

31040791095?profile=original

Two hundred forty years ago General George Washington, the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, took to the field with his troops and spent the next eight years engaging in a military campaign to secure freedom for our patriot ancestors and their posterity. He made some of his toughest decisions in his sleeping and office tent, what we like to refer to as the “First Oval Office.”

George Washington’s tent served as his field headquarters throughout the war.  Erin Jackson, the National President of the Children of the American Revolution 2015-2016 Project is to raise funds to support the preservation of our nation’s history and create a permanent home for this iconic treasure. It is an authentic witness to our founding history and traveled on the Road to Independence that led to the fulfillment of the dream for American independence and the expansion of liberty to future states.

"First Oval Office” will be permanent exhibit at the new Museum of the American Revolution.  The museum is now under construction in Philadelphia—the city that served as the headquarters to the Revolution. A dedicated theater will house the tent, dramatically bringing its story to life through state-of-the-art multimedia techniques. Scheduled to open in 2017, the museum is located just steps from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Many places claim that George Washington spent the night, but how many people can say that they have saved, made a home for, and promoted education about the room where General George Washington spent the entire Revolutionary War?  We have the opportunity to preserve a Revolutionary War artifact for generations to come.  To learn more please visit www.amrevmuseum.org

She was supposed to be a biomedical engineer, and by some twisted tragedy, Meghan became a singer/songwriter. How did this happen? She only knew a G chord on the guitar, yet the music and lyrics came in between the space of the sorrow she was experiencing.  She wasn't a musician.  Was she?

On the Way to the Waterfall is Meghan Cary's personal story.  She is a Billboard Magazine Newcomer pick and her debut album made it in the top 10 along with John Hiatt's that year.

You can check out all about Meghan via her website: http://www.meghancary.com

Back to my review.  Please suspend your judgement.  In all honesty, I am helping out this show at the 2014 Fringe Festival.  I will say that I am an avid arts fan just like anyone else, and I have been Fringing since 2006.  I have to say that this was one of the best Fringe shows I have experienced.  Maybe it is because, this time, it was personal.

My family went through a similar tragedy.  I got the call, I remember it being at around two in the afternoon, that my sister was in a car accident. I was hoping beyond hope that they were not riding their motorcycles that day. I barely got out the words to ask if she was okay, and the officer knew I was having trouble. He said she is going to be okay. My sister was in intensive care. I asked about her significant other, the officer quietly said, he didn't make it.

During the show, there was a scene that was extremely raw and powerful.  It was in that moment I was hit with all the emotion I know my sister had gone through.  It was anger at experiencing a loss when no loved one was around to help support the intense heavy load, and I lost it.  I knew in that moment what my sister had gone through. I never truly got it, what it was like before I could get to the hospital, until Meghan acted out her personal experience.  I am thankful I brought some tissues.

Another moment that had me breathe in, the grasping at the reason why this happened.  In a simple instant, "Oh."

The ending got me as well.  This show was well acted, professionally directed, fast flowing, and the music is demonstratively healing, as the part of the music truly was in Meghan's life.

So please, suspend judgement.  Of course I want this show to succeed.  I will say as the role of another arts attendee, this show is a must see.  At least give yourself the opportunity to witness a gifted talent, Meghan Cary, while you have this chance.

When it comes to modern Colorado weddings, that old standard of reheated stale food from a farm located 1500 miles away and the tired options of chicken or fish simply won't do. Environmentally conscious couples and foodies alike are now opting for locally grown, fresh, and organic options in their wedding reception cuisine, and caterers are hearing them loud and clear. Breaking new culinary grounds is The Wild Basin Lodge's chef, Nick Fuster, who has the unique skill of finding, identifying and incorporating local wild mushrooms into a variety of dishes.

The Wild Basin Lodge in Boulder County hosts over 250 weddings and events each year, and all food preparation is done on site by chef Fuster. You may remember Fuster from the recent blog post on My Town Colorado, and The Wild Basin Lodge staff is thrilled to have him on board. He came up with the inspired idea of mushroom hunting near the lodge and in the neighboring town of Lyons to add a local and organic flavor to cuisine for guests. While searching in the local area, he found porcini mushrooms, which are referred to as "Stein" in German. "Stein in German means rock because they blend in with the ground they grow in and look a lot like brown or reddish rocks," says Fuster. The chef slices up his finds, sautés them in olive oil and uses them for the lodge's wild mushroom risotto (a vegan dish that's often served at wedding receptions) and the wild mushroom sauce that tops Wild Basin steaks and New York strip steaks. "I found some right behind the lodge, but also around Allenspark and the Peaceful Valley area. But like every wild mushroom hunter, I can't tell the exact spots!" Says Fuster.

Fuster has introduced a wide variety of new organic menu options with locally-grown ingredients to the lodge's wedding and event menus, and worldwide travelers are consistently impressed with the quality of appetizers, side dishes, and entrées that are all freshly prepared on site for each unique private event. The chef, who previously worked as the head chef at The MED Restaurant in Boulder, integrates his international training in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Bermuda and Hawaii into several of his dishes while retaining a high standard of locally purchased ingredients. A few new menu options that have been added to the Wild Basin menu in 2013 include appetizers of bruschetta, Swedish meatballs, baked green lip mussels, and melon prosciutto and entrées of Colorado rack of lamb, crisp duck breast, and cornish game hen over a goat cheese cream sauce. Fuster purchases ingredients locally whenever possible and prides himself on preparing fresh cuisine for guests at the facility.

Fuster (pictured below in The Wild Basin Lodge's Copeland bar) continues to create new organic projects at the lodge. He started an herb garden next to the facility and uses fresh mint, cilantro, basil and other herbs in his popular cuisine. Do you have ideas for organic meals at your next Rocky Mountain event? Have you found wild mushrooms in Boulder County or have an interest in the hobby? Contact The Wild Basin Lodge to share your thoughts with Chef Fuster!

BOULDER RESIDENT TO WALK OVERNIGHT

FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION

Out of the Darkness Overnight Will Take Place in Washington D.C. June 1-2

Boulder, Colorado – On June 1st through 2nd Dana Montgomery-Gair will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Overnight, a 16 to 18-mile walk from sunset to sunrise, to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention.

“As someone who has experienced severe depression and come out the other side, I’m walking to show people it is possible to overcome this disease. Everyone deserves a chance at the life they want but some of us just need a little help to get there.”

According to AFSP close to one million people will make a suicide attempt and more than 38,000 will die by suicide in the U.S. this year.  “These statistics are troubling, but it is important to know that suicide can be prevented.  That is why I am walking in The Overnight, I want to take action to prevent suicide,” said Dana.

The Foundation hopes that by bringing this event to the nation’s capital it will elevate a national conversation about suicide prevention as well as motivate leaders to take more action regarding this serious public health problem.

Proceeds from the Out of the Darkness Overnight support research and a variety of prevention, education and advocacy programs including distribution of the Foundation’s More Than Sad educational program on teen depression and suicide prevention to high schools across the country.

To support Dana Montgomery-Gair or to get more information about The Overnight, call 888-The-Overnight or visit www.TheOvernight.org.

If you or someone you know is in crisis or having thoughts of suicide, remember that help is available.  For more information about suicide such as risk factors and warning signs, visit www.AFSP.org.

The History of Careers in America

The History of Careers in America

From shifts in the economy to advances in technology, the career choices of Americans have changed dramatically since the 1900s. Since the days when “farmer” was a popular occupation, to the present when 50 percent of the top 20 fastest growing jobs are in healthcare, career choices have certainly shifted over time. To illustrate the shift, Bryant & Stratton College, an institution that has been at the forefront of workplace education & training since the 1850s, recently released an infographic illustrating the History of Careers in America.

The Wild Basin Lodge in Allenspark, CO has added a new executive chef for future weddings and events. Chef Nick Fuster joins the staff after leading Boulder’s Mediterranean Restaurant culinary team for 11 years. Prior to his time at The Mediterranean Restaurant (or, as locals call it, The MED), Chef Fuster had a long and successful culinary career in Vail, Colorado; Maui, Hawaii; Switzerland, Greece, Italy, and Bermuda. The culinary expert was raised in Switzerland and from a young age, he received training in preparing cuisine for international travelers. Chef Fuster moved to Colorado in 1982 and fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and the wonderful people in Colorado. He also lived and worked as a chef in Maui for a while, but he found himself missing the changing seasons and the pristine mountain ambiance of Colorado. He moved back to the state and from 1995-2000, he owned a restaurant in Vail featuring American-inspired cuisine with a Mediterranean flair. Since he started at The MED, he has enjoyed the natural setting of Boulder and raising his family in the nearby town of Lyons. His interest in The Wild Basin Lodge was sparked when he learned about the family-oriented nature of the staff and saw the beautiful facilities in unincorporated Boulder County. The lodge, which is a private event and wedding venue located next to Longs Peak and the Rocky Mountain National Park, hosts over 256 weddings and events annually. Chef Fuster was excited to begin crafting new menu options for wedding guests and travelers as well as experience a change of pace from a public restaurant setting.

Chef Fuster brings a new variety of innovative, delicious, and expertly prepared menu options for wedding receptions and private events to The Wild Basin Lodge. Staff favorites include succulent lamb skewers with homemade tzatziki dipping sauce, farm-raised chicken breast stuffed with a combination of feta cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and a perfect balance of spices, gourmet bacon-wrapped dates on skewers, and a crab stuffed mushroom appetizer with a wonderful combination of Italian and Mediterranean spices. The venue continues to uphold high standards of food quality and uses locally grown, organic, and the freshest ingredients available for menu options. Chef Fuster proves that he can adhere to that policy while introducing even more Colorado-inspired dishes that attract clientele from all over the world. One such selection is a new basil pesto crusted Colorado striped bass with tomato relish that the staff prepares fresh on site. The chef drew much of his inspiration while designing new menu options for The Wild Basin Lodge from the fish, game, and vegetables that are unique to Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Patrons and engaged couples alike will be happy to know that the venue has retained its famous fried chicken recipe while adding many menu selections that surpass typical wedding and large event menus. Chef Fuster’s food is to die for, and the entire Wild Basin staff hopes to see Boulder locals at the lodge in the near future to plan their next event with a gourmet menu!

The Wild Basin Lodge invites Boulder locals and guests from all over the world to schedule a tour of the facilities to plan an event or wedding for 2-200 guests. Chef Fuster and the expert event coordination staff at the lodge happily craft custom menus for guests with specific dietary needs, budgets, and time restrictions. To begin planning your next outing in Boulder’s Rocky Mountains, contact the lodge at events@wildbasinlodge.com or (303) 747-2274.

As the World’s Most Refreshing Beer, many wish to battle Coors Light for the “Super Cold” title, but until now, never has the challenge been so great. In what may be the greatest battle of the coldest yet, Coors Light faces off with entertainment mogul Ice Cube in two new ads, titled “Cold Talk” and “Cold Challenge.” View the humorous standoff between Ice Cube – hip-hop star, actor, screenwriter, director and producer -- and Super Cold Activated Coors Light in “Cold Talk” here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlE5zKAYlJg).

The Current Champion

Super Cold Activated Coors Light is the World’s Most Refreshing Beer specializing in providing consumers with refreshment as cold as the Rockies. As part of its upcoming Super Cold Summer, Coors Light is debuting the latest in cold-activated technology: New Coors Light Two-Stage Activation bottles and cans, which make it easy to see when your Coors Light goes from cold … to Super Cold.

Studies indicate that more than 70 percent of legal-drinking-age men have put their beer in the freezer to achieve the desired level of cold. The trick is to know when to take the beer out. Now on Coors Light bottles and cans, the iconic mountains still turn blue when the beer is cold, and in addition, a new Cold Indicator bar will turn blue at the same time. Then, when the Coors Light temperature is at the peak of refreshment, a second Super Cold Indicator bar turns blue.

As an extension of the Two-Stage Cold Activation packaging launch, nearly 3,500 beer retailers who meet the right criteria to ensure Coors Light is Super Cold at the point of purchase will be “Super Cold Certified” this spring. The retailers will display a neon sign as evidence that the Coors Light in their store is Super Cold.

The Challenger

Known to be one of the most important figures in rap history, Ice Cube can add actor, screenwriter, film director, and producer to his illustrious list of accomplishments.  With his inherently cold name, Ice Cube is a worthy opponent in the battle over who is colder.

As a rapper, he has sold more than 10 million albums to date.  As an award-winning actor, he has appeared in more than 20 films, and he has directed or produced movies such as “Are We There Yet?” and “Barbershop.” Additionally, he served as one of the producers of the Showtime television series “Barbershop” and the TBS series “Are We There Yet?,” both of which are based upon films in which he portrayed the lead character. Cube is getting ready to kickoff a European concert tour in June.

Can Super Cold Activated Coors Light maintain the “Super Cold” title and continue its reign as the coldest? Or will the entertainment mogul with the coldest name in the game win the battle and the “Super Cold” title? To find out, view the epic “Cold Talk” standoff here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlE5zKAYlJg). For more information on the Coors Light Super Cold Summer visit Coors Light on Facebook.

Hard lessons of life....

I don't know where to begin... as a writer I know the beginning is a good place. When I became homeless I had brought my then four year-old son with me from Texas to California... I had no idea why I made the move; yet I was 32 and still living at home. My pregnancy was(thankfully) an easy one...
I always felt as if my mother was ashamed of me because I had not bothered to marry the father. Well, I couldn't. He told me he was in the middle of getting divorced. Being as young and naieve as I was I fell for it.
What can I say? Love really is blind... I think my son's father is at least nine years older than I am; I'm not sure. What mattered to me was to get as far away from my mother as I possibly could. No, I didn't have a plan; had I had one my life may have turned out differently.
Be that as it may this is not my story. My story, in Colorado, begins in October of '06... It was going to be my first winter. I got off the bus at Broadway and asked where I could find housing. I was directed to Thistle Housing.... They could not help me; but the woman told me about the boulder Shelter for the homeless.
"Well, where's that?" You need to get to North Broadway..." Which way is north, and where was Broadway? After figuring out what direction to go... I made my way to Pearl Street and hung a right at the correct street(I hoped).
I won't bore the reader with too many details... but as often as happens in my life people I now found myself in the company of started coming to me and lamenting their woes...
I must say that as I listened two distinct stories, from diverse people, started to become common-place.... 1) Men had to suffer through the "lottery". Basically a numbered "chip" is drawn and your name is written beside that number... sounds fair enough; yes? Now, women get into the Shelter no matter what.
Let's say a man has been standing outside since five when the gate opens. He receives the number 105... Six-thirty rolls around and this man's name still hasn't been called... Another man comes in on one of the busses... his number is four, and he gets right in... starting to see the unfairness?
2) The second story to emerge was one from people who turn in their medications.... At the Shelter there is a "Supply Window" and those who take meds are to turn them in... I have seen with my own eyes people turning in a full bottle only to get it back the next day, half empty or less.
Now, I don't know what's running through your mind right now, but some of these are older folk on pain killers and heart medicine.
They're homeless; yet most of them are the same age as your mother and father that may or may not be in nursing homes...
A last story I almost didn't mention because it is just too unconsciable....
While I was in the Shelter myself I saw just a small part of this.... Apparently some of the food that would be donated would be picked over by Staff members. I've been told many turkeys, steaks, and other delctables never made it on to the menu...
Friends of mine still there see much of this food, for the Homeless, end up in the garbage right out in back... what do they get fed.... cheap stuff.. Any of you out there have food allergies? Are you gluten intolerant? Are you allergic to eggs or peanuts?
Do yourself a favor and don't eat at the Shelter.... How I managed to survive i'll never know... My stomach was so bloated when I left, I thought I was pregnant... No, I wasn't but you see my point? This Thanks giving if you want to make a Thanksgiving meal for the Shelter, make it once you're there.
Staff doesn't need to help; they should be busy in other endeavors. This has long been a burden for me to write this and to get this off my chest. God bless!!

An astonishing 40 percent of Americans have either experienced or know someone who has experienced an eating disorder, yet misperceptions about these devastating diseases are still plentiful. To build understanding and awareness during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 21-27), Eating Recovery Center (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com), a licensed and Joint Commission accredited behavioral hospital providing comprehensive treatment and sustainable recovery for eating disorders, reveals five eye-opening eating disorder facts that are not widely known.

  1. 1. Eating disorders are genetic. An individual with an anorexic mother or sister is 12 times more likely to develop anorexia nervosa and four times more likely to develop bulimia nervosa. These are not disorders of choice.
  2. 2. Eating disorders are the deadliest mental illness. A woman with anorexia nervosa is 5.6 times more likely to die than another woman of her same age. The most frequent causes of death from eating disorders are suicide (32%), complications associated with anorexia (19%), and cancer (11%). The average age of death for an individual with anorexia is only 34 years.
  3. 3. The circumstances that cause an eating disorder often have nothing to do with the reasons it continues. An illness, traumatic experience or diet may initiate an eating disorder. However, an individual’s underlying personality traits, values and fears are what can prohibit recovery.
  4. 4. Eating disorders are not merely triggered by a desire to be thin. For instance, an individual who does not know that he or she has wheat or lactose intolerance may develop a fear of food due to the discomfort or pain it causes. Someone in chemotherapy or with a gastrointestinal disorder may stop eating to avoid nausea.
  5. 5. People can completely recover from eating disorders. Eating disorders are not addictions and do not have to lead to lifelong struggles with food. With proper treatment, individuals can completely recover from eating disorders.

“The fact is that eating disorders are complex, biologically based mental illnesses. They can arise from a variety of potential causes and affect a wide demographic of Americans,” explains Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, founding partner and medical director of Eating Recovery Center. “In our society, eating disorders carry stigmas that too often prevent people from seeking help. Awareness minimizes misconceptions and is vital to help the millions of people with eating disorders feel comfortable finding the treatment they need.”

About the Laptop-Battery Danger

About the Laptop-Battery Danger

Apple Computer announces it is recalling nearly 2 million notebook computer batteries that could overheat and catch fire. The batteries, like 4 million recalled by Dell, are made by the same supplier, Sony. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

The Apple Computer company is recalling nearly two million laptop batteries like Apple A1008 because of a fire hazard. The move comes just over a week after rival computer-maker Dell announced its own battery recall. Both companies used batteries manufactured by the Sony Corporation.

Apple's recall of 1.8 million laptop batteries is the second biggest ever for a computer maker, topped only by Dell's Dell GK479 last week that it would replace more than four million batteries.

Mr. SCOTT WOLFSON (Spokesman, Consumer Product Safety Commission): We have the same issue once again of overheating, of that fire hazard. So once again, consumers need to pay attention to this recall.HORSLEY: Sony spokesman, Rick Clancy, says the battery cells involved in both recalls were made at the same Sony factory in Japan. Sony also makes batteries Acer Travelmate C300 battery for other PC makers, but Clancy does not expect any more recalls.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, batteries in at least six Dell laptops overheated or caught fire, causing some damage. The Commission's Scott Wolfson said Apple heard complaints from nine customers, likePowerBook G4 15 battery, two of whom suffered minor burns. Professor Sadoway has been looking for a way to build safer lithium ion cells by replacing the volatile liquid center with a solid. Even though such research is important, he says, it's not been terribly fashionable.

SRI in the Rockies, the largest and longest-running sustainable and responsible investing conference in the world, will mark its 20th year and highlight growing opportunities for investors who embrace innovative investment strategies targeted on environmental, social, and governance factors. More than 650 attendees from the U.S. and around the world are expected to gather October 25–28, 2009 at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. The 20th Anniversary SRI in the Rockies Conference. From Crisis to Opportunity: Investing for a Sustainable Economy, will be presented by First Affirmative Financial Network in collaboration with the Social Investment Forum. “Sustainable and responsible investing is moving rapidly to the forefront of investment strategy,” said Steve Schueth, President of First Affirmative. “This year’s conference has a particular responsibility to highlight how we all can play a crucial role in finding real market solutions to the world’s environmental and social problems and make money in the process.” The 2009 conference list of speakers include: James K. Galbraith, PhD, the Lloyd M. Bentsen chair in Government and Business Relations and professor of Economics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin; Mindy S. Lubber, president of Ceres, the leading U.S. coalition of investors and environmental leaders working to improve corporate environmental, social, and governance practices; Auden Schendler, executive director of Sustainability at Aspen Skiing Company; and Andy Serwer, managing editor of FORTUNE magazine. Lisa Woll, CEO of the Social Investment Forum, said: “The 20th anniversary of SRI in the Rockies occurs in a year in which there already have been significant steps forward in the national commitment to advancing policies that support good governance, transparency, and concerted attention on environmental and social issues within businesses and financial institutions. With national attention on addressing the financial crisis and regulatory frameworks, dealing with climate change and creating a clean, green economy, and looking at broad social and governance issues including executive compensation and mortgage and credit card reform, we believe that more individual and institutional investors will become socially responsible investors.” As the premier industry event, SRI in the Rockies attracts a wide range of investment professionals—from financial advisors to institutional investors and mutual fund companies, as well as social research and proxy voting organizations. Members of religious organizations and social change non-profits, and officers from community development banks, credit unions, and related organizations also will be in attendance. “Given the growing global awareness of investing for a more sustainable future, this year’s conference is all about identifying opportunities that are presenting themselves at this important juncture in the history of investing,” said Schueth. The 2009 conference will benefit from the support of leaders in the SRI industry including Calvert, a mutual fund company that for 30 years has been offering the nation's largest array of sustainable and responsible mutual funds. Calvert is unique among sponsoring organizations in that it has been a supporter of all 20 SRI in the Rockies conferences.
