Throughout childhood, kids need a number of vaccinations, also called immunizations, to build up the body’s defenses against dangerous infections and diseases. These immunizations, some of which are a single shot, and others a series of shots over several days, months or years, help keep your child healthy.
Immunizations work by safely introducing a child’s body to the killed or weakened part of a germ that is responsible for infection. The body reacts to the germ by making antibodies – the body’s defenders against disease and illness. By immunizing your child at the recommended times, you give his or her immune system a chance to make antibodies. If the actual disease germs ever attack your child’s body, the antibodies will attack and eliminate the germs. Children who aren’t immunized do not have the antibodies necessary to fight many serious, and even fatal, diseases.
Recommended immunizations for children ages 0 through 6 include:
• Hepatitis B
• Rotavirus
• Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
• Haemophilus influenzae type b
• Pneumococcal5
• Inactivated Poliovirus
• Influenza
• Measles, Mumps, Rubella
• Varicella
• Hepatitis A
• Meningococcal
Contact a pediatrician to determine which immunizations your child should receive at different stages of childhood.
Like any medicine, vaccinations can occasionally cause mild reactions. These reactions can include pain, redness and swelling where the shot was given. Infants can be fussy for 24 to 48 hours after a shot and may also sometimes experience a low-grade fever. These are common and expected side effects and not cause for concern. If your child experiences high fever, swelling of the throat, behavior changes, dizziness, wheezing, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, hives or a fast heart rate, call your pediatrician immediately for an evaluation of your child’s health.
Vaccines are generally quite safe and the protection provided by vaccines far outweighs the very small risk of serious problems. In regard to vaccinations and autism, there is no medical evidence that vaccines cause autism. Dr. Andrew Wakefield first promoted this controversial connection in 1998, but he has since admitted that he fabricated the findings he said proved a link between vaccinations and autism.

I am proud to announce that I will be hosting a townhall meeting with community, business, and education leaders focusing on the consequences of Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101. These three issues will be on the ballot in November. I am hosting the discussion because I feel that it is essential that Coloradans should be informed about the aspects of these ballot measures, including their impact on our state's business, jobs, and schools. The three other participants at the discussion will be:
-RJ Hicks, Metro North Chamber of Commerce
-Jennie Belval, Board Member, Boulder Valley School District
-Sheila MacDonald, Coloradans for Responsible Reform
While supporters of these three initiatives were invited to participate in this roundtable, they declined our invitation. The discussion will be held on Saturday, July 24th from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library located at 3 Community Park Road in Broomfield.
Eating Recovery Center (http://bit.ly/dCLIrZ), a national eating disorders recovery program providing comprehensive treatment for anorexia and bulimia, today announced the opening of a new outpatient location. Enabling Eating Recovery Center to expand its outpatient recovery services, the new Denver, Colo. office will offer integrated care for eating disorders in a flexible outpatient setting.
“This expansion allows Eating Recovery Center to offer patients a collaborative, team-based approach to outpatient eating disorder treatment,” said Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, co-founder and medical director of Eating Recovery Center. “With access to a team of individual and family therapists, dietitians, and medical professionals, patients benefit from a well-rounded treatment experience that can help them achieve sustainable recovery.”
The outpatient clinical team works together to help individuals and families who are new to eating disorder treatment address disordered eating and body image issues before they have the chance to escalate. The clinicians are also committed to helping individuals who have been in a recovery program stay on track as they move into lower levels of care. The services offered include individual and family therapy, dietary counseling, psychiatric medical management, body
image and aftercare eating disorder support groups (http://bit.ly/bkZtR1), and an evening intensive outpatient program, which begins this month.
The evening intensive outpatient program is an integrated option for individuals who require more structure than individual counseling provides. Participants meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. and take part in individual counseling, group therapy, nutrition education and multifamily therapy. They learn to break patterns that maintain their diseases and integrate sustainable changes into their lives. The timing of the program enables participants to integrate the skills learned in evening sessions into their daily lives.
“Eating disorders are complex conditions and every person’s experience with the disease is different,” explains Weiner. “The evening intensive outpatient program allows us to tailor treatment to the individual needs of each patient and promote successful recovery.”
Eating Recovery Center also operates a licensed behavioral hospital for adults with severe eating disorders, and will open an adolescent treatment facility in the Denver Lowry neighborhood in October 2010. All services are guided by the leadership and clinical expertise of Weiner and Emmett R. Bishop, Jr., MD, CEDS, co-founders of Eating Recovery Center and nationally renowned experts who have separately founded numerous other eating disorder programs (http://bit.ly/dCLIrZ) throughout the country.
The outpatient office is now open at 600 S. Cherry Street, Suite 600, in Denver, Colo. For more information or to make an appointment, please call 877-218-1344.
The world's largest maker of wind turbines, Vestas, is bringing over a hundred new jobs to our community, thanks to Colorado's commitment to a clean energy economy.
Vestas is locating its research-and-development facility in Louisville, where it plans to employ 75 to 125 engineers, scientists and support staff within the next year with an estimated payroll of $8 million.
Just last year, I supported one of the most aggressive tax incentives in state history for companies who bring new, good-paying jobs to the state and now with Vestas adding these jobs in our backyard, we’re starting to see the desired outcome.
This year, working with the state’s largest utilities, I helped pass legislation pledging 30% of its energy come from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2020 – the second highest goal in the nation. Vestas and our own local engineers will be a part of achieving this impressive goal.
Myself and my fellow Democrats in the state legislature have aggressively worked to diversify Colorado's energy portfolio, to drive innovation, and to train our workforce for tomorrow’s green-collar jobs. In the process, the state’s attracted more than 1,800 new companies, tens of thousands of new jobs, and millions in new investment to Colorado.
Vestas Technology is looking primarily for electrical and mechanical engineers, with open positions posted at monster.com or careerbuilder.com.

“But I don’t like it!” “Yuck!” “Ewww!” Sound familiar? How many times have you heard these words come out of your child’s mouth? Often we hear our children say these words before they have had even one bite of a new food.
Developing a taste for a new food is a learning process. When it comes to fruits and vegetables it is especially important to eat a variety because fruits and vegetables are the primary source of vitamins that growing bodies need to be healthy and fight diseases.
Most children need to try a new food at least 10 – 15 times before they develop a taste for it; so keep trying! Here are some tricks from Dr. Sears L.E.A.N. Coaches to help you expand your child’s palate:
1. Use “The bite rule” to encourage the reluctant eater: "Take one bite, two bites…" (How ever far you think you can push it without force-feeding). The bite rule at least gets your child to taste a new food, while giving her some control over the feeding.
2. Share it. If your child is going through a picky-eater stage, invite one of your child’s friends over who is the same age or slightly older whom you know "likes to eat." Your child will catch on. Group feeding lets the other kids set the example.
3. Dip it. Children (and adults) think that immersing foods in a tasty dip is pure fun (and delightfully messy). Some possibilities to dip into:
• Cottage cheese or tofu dip
• Cream cheese
• Fruit juice-sweetened preserves
• Guacamole
• Peanut butter, thinly spread
• Pureed fruits or vegetables
• Yogurt, plain or sweetened with juice concentrate
Those dips serve equally well as spreads on apple or pear slices, bell-pepper strips, rice cakes, bagels, toast, or other nutritious platforms.
4. Package it. Appearance is important. For something new and different, why not use your child's own toy plates for dishing out a snack? Our kids enjoy the unexpected and fanciful when it comes to serving dishes – anything from plastic measuring cups to muffin tins.
5. Creative cuts. Using a small cookie cutter, cut the vegetables into interesting shapes.
6. Steam your greens. They are much more flavorful if they are gently steamed (just a few minutes) and usually sweeter than when raw.
7. Be persistent! It will pay off and your child will thank you later.
These healthy tips to help expand your child’s palate are taught by Dr. Sears L.E.A.N Coaches - certified individuals who train parents and organizations to help children live healthier lives through Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition.
Dr. Sears’ L.E.A.N. Coach Candidates are people with a passion for improving the health and wellness of children, families and expectant mothers, including healthcare workers, childbirth educators, parents, community leaders, Head Start case workers, sports coaches, educators and others who are committed to improving the health of future generations.
The next Dr. Sears L.E.A.N. Training and Certification (www.drsearslean.com/coaches) will be August 6-8, 2010, at the Renaissance Denver Hotel in Denver, Colo. For more information, visit http://www.drsearslean.com/coaches/be-a-coach/registration.
Eating Recovery Center (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com) (http://bit.ly/bBWnJL), a licensed behavioral hospital providing comprehensive treatment and sustainable recovery for eating disorders, was named one of 50 Colorado Companies to Watch at a gala awards ceremony Friday evening. This dynamic business recognition program, founded by the Edward Lowe Foundation, identifies and celebrates second-stage companies that are transforming our economies and our lives.
Colorado Companies to Watch fuels the state’s economic fire by supporting growing businesses that are developing valuable products and services, creating quality jobs, enriching communities, and building new industries throughout Colorado.
“We founded Eating Recovery Center to fill a void in Denver eating disorder treatment,” explains Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, medical director and founding partner of Eating Recovery Center. “Adults challenged with varying intensities of eating disorders in the Rocky Mountain region and beyond now have access to a truly integrated treatment program that cultivates lasting behavioral change and sustains long-term recovery, despite the stage or severity of their disease.”
In addition to being evaluated on past growth and projected success, applicants are also judged according to their special strengths. These special strengths revolve around a company's innovative products and business practices, special use of technology, work within their community and more. Colorado Companies to Watch also weighs the value of creating good quality jobs, diverse industries, and statewide representation.
Eating Recovery Center was honored for its innovation in facility design, influence in the behavioral health industry and the Denver community, and job creation in the growing healthcare field. The behavioral hospital was also recognized for filling a void in regional eating disorder treatment (http://bit.ly/bBWnJL) by providing high quality care – from inpatient treatment to outpatient programming – for adults with anorexia and bulimia.
"I fully support the Colorado Companies to Watch program,” said Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. “I understand the value of these high-growth second-stage companies to our state's economy and encourage others to get involved in making this program a great success. It fits perfectly with our dynamic economic strategy for Colorado.”
The 2010 Colorado Companies to Watch were recognized in the June edition of ColoradoBIZ Magazine, and at a gala awards celebration on June 18, 2010, at the Denver Marriott City Center. Each company will be named “This Week’s Colorado Company to Watch” during one week of the next year. Media partnerships such as with 9News in the Denver-metro area will highlight awardees throughout the year.
“Congratulations to Eating Recovery Center on your accomplishment of being named a 2010 Colorado Companies to Watch,” said Don Marostica, director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade. “The competition was strong, and being selected as an awardee is truly an honor and a testament to the vitality of your company.”
The Center’s October 2008 opening launched Colorado eating disorder treatment (http://bit.ly/bBWnJL) to the forefront as a leading region for eating disorder recovery. Denver is now one of the few cities in the U.S. where adults with severe eating disorders can receive the full spectrum of recovery options under the supervision of nationally recognized eating disorder experts.
Eating Recovery Center, which operates an adult licensed behavioral hospital in central Denver, an outpatient facility on Cherry Street in Denver, and will open an adolescent treatment facility in the Denver Lowry neighborhood in October 2010, accepts patients from across the country. The Center was founded by renowned experts Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, and Emmett R. Bishop, Jr., MD, CEDS, who have separately founded numerous other treatment centers throughout the country. Eating Recovery Center proves to be the culmination of the two doctors’ efforts and expertise.
When parents and students are considering online high schools, they’ll find a number of choices, both private and public. The private schools may stress their high-quality curriculum but often charge high tuition. Public online schools are free but may not provide the best academics or student support. Is there a third choice? Yes. A new education option that combines the best of all online school options is now being offered in Colorado.
At Provost Academy, Student Success is Key
Provost Academy is a free public online Colorado high school whose mission is to ensure that students are successful in their courses and that they master the knowledge necessary to provide them the greatest opportunities in their careers or college studies. For students and families who are seeking a challenging curriculum in a non-traditional, flexible environment, this new online high school may be the perfect choice.
Student Success: Engagement, Accountability, and Support
The key element of Provost Academy’s program is ongoing communication among the three partners in a student’s learning success: the student, the parents and the school.
When students first enroll in Provost Academy, they are given an initial test that helps guide their academic path. From there, families work with an Academic Advisor to plan and monitor the student’s progress.
Lessons are designed to work with the learning style of each student, and advanced students can move through lessons quickly while those students who need to take additional time on a particular subject can do so without falling behind. Each lesson provides instant feedback as students progress, and ends daily with a test so students can see where they are succeeding or need to spend more time.
Recognizing the important role they play in helping their children succeed, Provost Academy also makes sure that parents can monitor student progress regularly. Parents and instructional staff can easily view grades and the status of assignments at any time online. If a student falls behind in a given area, an “Achievement Alert” is sent and a plan of action is implemented. Progress is also monitored regularly to ensure that students remain on track.
Challenging Courses That Reflect Real-World Opportunities
Provost Academy offers a uniquely-designed academic program that gives students the skills, confidence and encouragement to graduate, while also preparing them for the workplace or college.
This academic program was developed with faculty members at Stanford University’s School of Education. It was specifically designed to combine excellence in online teaching with courses that would best prepare students for real-world opportunities after they graduate.
In fact, the school offers more than 100 highly engaging courses, including advanced placement (A.P.) and honors courses. As part of its commitment to providing students with the most in-demand knowledge, Provost Academy Colorado courses emphasize such important subjects as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), which are increasingly sought-after in today’s job market.
Provost Academy believes that its challenging classes, and students’ ability to succeed in them, will instill the confidence and knowledge they need to easily pass state-mandated exams, including the exams required to earn a high school diploma, required of all public high school students.
A Trusted and Experienced Partner
Provost Academy is able to offer such a high-quality, reliable, and effective program because it is affiliated with EdisonLearning, the nation’s largest partner to public school districts and communities. In fact, EdisonLearning currently serves hundreds of thousands of students nationwide through successful charter schools, after school tutoring, and through academic services that are provided to school districts.
Whereas many online schools, both public and private, are new to education, EdisonLearning has nearly two decades of proven experience improving results for students across the country who are learning both online and in the classroom. Provost Academy is now enrolling students for the 2010-2011 academic year.
High, fast water is a welcome treat for kayak competitors, but can cause alarm for the safety of citizens watching near the banks of a dangerous creek. A combined team from the Boulder Emergency Squad and Longmont Emergency Unit provided certified swift water rescuers to standby in case someone fell in the creek while watching the national kayak competition in Lyons Colorado.
(Boulder, Colorado). June 13, 2010 -- Expertly trained volunteers from Boulder Emergency Squad-B.E.S. and Longmont Emergency Unit-L.E.U. combined forces this weekend to provide a team of Swift Water rescuers in Lyons Colorado where the 8th Annual Outdoor Games were being held. The games include many fun outdoor sports and the kayaking competition typically attracts great interest. Often with that interest comes crowds standing at the water's edge to catch the exciting in-water kayak action.
Kevin Parker, White Water event coordinator for the games, said "We appreciate the presence of B.E.S. and L.E.U. to ensure a safe and fun event for all participants and spectators". Parker emphasized that there is a lot of peace of mind that the trained
rescuers are on scene.
With this year's early high water run-off, kayakers enjoyed tremendous 'holes', a term used to describe a hydraulic of fast churning water where competition takes place. These expert kayakers of all ages are actually well trained and often able to self-rescue should they encounter any danger. Not so for spectators who line the creek with their kids and pets in tow. That's where the trained volunteer specialists from B.E.S. and L.E.U. bring great value.
long day of rescue standby at the kayak competition.
B.E.S. Operations Captain Shea Gilliam said "The water is overflowing most Boulder County creek banks and is extremely fast, strong and dangerous to be near" The B.E.S. and L.E.U. team donned full wetsuits, vests, helmets and were equipped with water rescue boards, throw lines and their expertise.
"During this time of year with high water runoff and increased outdoor recreational activities we are all spread pretty thin. It's good to know we can each
call a rescue team we trust to respond appropriately." says Eric Johnson, L.E.U.
Water Group team leader.
During the course of the 3-day event, rope rescue assists were performed by the water rescue team and in each case it was to assist a kayak competitor out of danger.
