On Sixtyfortyproject.com, one dollar can buy you 60 seconds of fame and a child 40 days of clean water. Launching today and live for only one month, the website offers individuals and businesses the opportunity to donate a dollar in return for the privilege of projecting a message for 60 seconds on the side of Dominion Towers, Denver Pavilions and a building in Larimer Square.

Sixtyfortyproject.com is part of the UNICEF Tap Project, a national grassroots fundraising initiative built around World Water Day, March 22, to help the nonprofit provide clean water to children around the world.

“Nearly 900 million people on our planet don’t have access to safe, clean water. In fact, water-related illness is the second biggest killer of children worldwide,” explains Maria Choi from the US Fund for UNICEF. “With one dollar, UNICEF can provide safe water to one child for 40 days, or 40 children safe water for one day.”

Donate safe water and speak your mind to the city of Denver in five simple steps.

1. Visit sixtyfortyproject.com between March 21 and April 21.

2. Donate a dollar to the UNICEF Tap Project.

3. Type your message. Sixtyfortyproject.com welcomes musings, marriage proposals, manifestos and more. Profanity and inappropriate content won’t make the cut.

4. Sixtyfortyproject.com tells you what time and where your message will appear.

5. Enjoy your 60 seconds of fame and the knowledge that you have provided a child with 40 days of clean water.

Through UNICEF, donations will go to improving access to safe water and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promoting safe hygiene practices. UNICEF's goal is to reduce by half the number of people without sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation by 2015.

The project was developed by Sukle Advertising & Design, with web development from Statera, public relations outreach by CSG|PR, and site coordination managed by Denver’s Larimer Square, the Denver Pavilions and Dominion Towers.

According to a report last month from University of California at Los Angeles’ Higher Education Research, the number of college freshman choosing fields of study within science, technology, engineering and mathematics has been rising for the last 15 years across all races. That is good news for the United States as the jobs of the future and America’s competitiveness depends on students with knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). And that knowledge starts in high school.

The push for more STEM focus in K-12 education has become a national priority. In fact, recently, President Obama launched “Educate to Innovate,” a campaign to engage more of America’s students in the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. “Educate to Innovate” calls for leading companies, foundations, nonprofits, and other organizations to find ways to encourage students to participate, not only for the future of the country, but also for the future of those students.

So, why are STEM subjects so important to the United States, and our students? For at least three reasons:

STEM is Key to Global and Career Competitiveness
First, in order to remain competitive with workers around the world, it is necessary for Americans to have strong skills in the areas where innovation and new thinking will create opportunity. Some of these areas include biotechnology, aeronautical engineering, environmental sustainability, and materials science.

Students in India, China and other countries are being trained to excel in these areas now. If our students are left behind academically, we will lose these high-paying jobs to overseas companies.

Technology is a Part of Almost Every Job Today
Second, almost all jobs today have some sort of technology component to them, and any student unfamiliar with the basics of science, technology, engineering and mathematics will find it difficult to build a solid career without these skills.

STEM courses are as important for students who do not plan to attend college as for those who do, because being smart about science, technology, engineering and mathematics will open up higher-paying job opportunities for high school graduates and help with career advancement for years to come.

Career Opportunities for Women and Minorities
Third, the STEM professions are actively looking for women and minorities to recruit in order to create more diverse thinking and participation in these professions. So female and minority students have a special incentive to pursue courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

While STEM education is a national priority, getting students the education they need for success starts at home. Today, parents can make choices in their K-12 educational options to seek out programs that focus on STEM. For example, in Colorado, a new online charter high school, Provost Academy (www.co.provostacademy.com) recently launched with an intensive focus on STEM courses. Having coursework in these subjects helps position students for college application, and job opportunities after graduation. These are high-paying, challenging jobs that can be found everywhere―in corporations, in government, in research institutes, and in the military. STEM knowledge is one of the best career assets any high school graduate can have.

Spam in my Job Search

Whatever happened to the days when you could look in the local newspaper to find companies who need honest help. Now-a-days, every newspaper company has outsourced their job section to online companies that could care less about local communities, or local people. I went to the Daily Camera and Denver Post looking for work, and they push me onto Yahoo Jobs. When I get onto the internet and refine a search to find local jobs in Boulder, I feel violated with the search results. How the heck are there 1500 jobs in Boulder, CO posted today?

It's because 1400 of those jobs are spam! Work For Home! Amazing Sales Job! Earn $100k+ With Both Hands Tied Behind Your Back!

Who is running the spam-engines of Yahoojobs / Careerbuilder / Monster???

How can our trusted local new source agree to advertise the employment of the local town into such a discraceful place?

It makes me sick to see how lazy people have become, and how easily a newspaper will sell-out for a quick online buck. Have some respect for the hard working people who are going crazy trying to find work.

Entirely Frustrated,

Chad Pettrone

Bryant & Stratton College, a pioneer in career education since 1854 and the premier provider of online associate’s degrees, announced today the launch of the Salute to Spouses scholarship program for military spouses. The first 100 qualified applicants will receive a Salute to Spouses scholarship, which will provide up to $6,000 to attend Bryant & Stratton College Online.

In February, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) suspended the popular Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts program (MyCAA), which offered military spouses up to $6,000 for college or career training. MyCAA was suspended after the program received an unexpected and overwhelming number of enrollments. While DoD has announced that it will honor the financial assistance approved for MyCAA participants already enrolled, no additional benefits will be approved or paid until a review of the program has been completed.

“The abrupt suspension of the MyCAA program is creating a tremendous void for military spouses and we want to do what we can to help those who have given so much in support of our military,” said Scott Traylor, Bryant & Stratton’s Director of Admissions for Online Education. “Career education is especially important for military spouses, since the most portable, high-growth careers often require more than a high-school diploma. Life in the military means frequent relocation, making it difficult for spouses without advanced education to find work or build a career.”

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 60 percent of the top-twenty fastest growing occupations require at least an associate’s degree. High-growth, high-demand occupations, such as those in healthcare, are ideal for military spouses who need skills that will translate regardless of their location. The Salute to Spouses scholarship program is an opportunity for military spouses affected by the suspension of the MyCAA program to continue their education while the Department of Defense completes its review. If the MyCAA program is reinstated, the combination of the Salute to Spouses scholarship and MyCAA cannot exceed the cost of tuition.

The Salute to Spouses scholarship program for military spouses will award 100 scholarships up to $600 (for part-time students) or $1,200 (for full-time students) per semester for programs offered by Bryant & Stratton College Online, with a maximum $6,000 scholarship award per recipient. To qualify, applicants must:

• Be a military spouse with military ID card;
• Have graduated high school prior to the current academic year;
• Submit a written essay;
• Follow all scholarship policies as outlined in the Bryant & Stratton College catalog, such as maintaining a 3.0 GPA with no breaks in enrollment.

More information about the Salute to Spouses scholarship program for military spouses offered by Bryant & Stratton College Online can be found at www.SalutetoSpouses.com.

Bryant & Stratton College Online is regionally accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and offers three online bachelor’s degree programs, ten online associate’s degree programs and nine online certificate programs in a variety of fields including business, criminal justice, financial services, healthcare, human resources and information technology. Information about the programs offered by Bryant & Stratton College Online is available at http://online.bryantstratton.edu.

Keeping the laptop running on battery power

Keeping the laptop running on battery power

A lot of people leave the laptop plugged into the wall all the time, as they seldom venture out into the wild. Others are highly mobile by nature, and those folks know that sometimes squeezing the most out of the apple a1079 laptop battery is extremely important. Business travelers are often confronted with long trips where power outlets are few and far between.

Keeping the laptop running on battery power is the top order of the day at such times. Here are 5 ways to squeeze the most out of laptop batteries. This article is focused on Microsoft Windows 7, but the concepts are applicable to any laptop.Dim the screen and keyboard for Sony VGP-BPS10/B battery . It may be obvious that the laptop screen is a power-sucking component, but I often see travelers using laptops with the screen at full brightness.

Nothing will drain the battery faster than a fully lit display. Turn the screen brightness all the way down, and then gradually bump it up until it is just barely viewable of apple a1078 battery . This will extend your battery life tremendously, in some cases, for hours. If your laptop has a backlit keyboard, turn that off entirely. It¡¯s not a big battery drain but all of the little things together add up to mean less time at the keyboard.

Kill the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth . If you don¡¯t need to get connected to a hotspot, kill the Wi-Fi. Many laptops have switches to do so easily, but for those that don¡¯t there is usually a utility to turn the radios off Sony VGP-BPL13 battery . Even if you need the Wi-Fi you should definitely turn the Bluetooth off. This uses a radio and that means it needs power to function.

You shouldn¡¯t need Bluetooth at all while mobile. If you use a Bluetooth mouse, consider leaving it turned off so you can kill the radio. It may keep you running for a few more minutes before the laptop dies.Put movies on a USB flash drive for Sony VGP-BPS10A battery . If you normally watch DVDs on trips, consider ripping them to a USB flash drive. Spinning optical drives drain the battery rapidly, where USB drives take tiny sips. This can make a big difference when watching a movie on the plane.

The same can be said for any content that is usually accessed through the optical drive. There are many utilities on the web that can get content from optical drives to a USB flash drive of apple a1022 battery .Turn off extraneous hardware . Every component on the laptop requires power, even when it is not being used. Most things on today¡¯s systems don¡¯t use a lot of power, but in critical situations where maximum runtime is vital it may be worthwhile to turn unused components off.

These include Ethernet ports, fingerprint readers, optical drives, modems and various ports. Many laptops have utilities pre-installed to help turn these off, but even if yours doesn¡¯t it can be done in the Device Manager of Sony PCGA-BP71 battery . On Windows 7 laptops, this can be accessed by right-clicking on the Computer icon and then selecting the Device Manager link.

Background/ unneeded programs . This one is only for those who must squeeze as much runtime out of the laptop battery as possible. Every system has a lot of programs running in the background of Sony VGP-BPS10/B battery , and these programs hit the CPU for processing power. This results in a power hit, and while it is very small everything has an impact.

If it¡¯s vital to get maximum runtime, turn off any background apps that are not actively needed for the work session. If there are programs you have installed that run in the background of Sony VGP-BPS10/S battery , such as desktop widgets, turn them off manually for the session. You should be able to do this safely for anything on a temporary basis, and save power by doing so.

keeping your computer unplugged as a way of extending the life of your battery

Recently years, batteries and battery chemistry develop rather specifically, but without becoming overwhelmingly technical. He explains how batteries begin to fail, and suggests keeping your computer unplugged as a way of extending the life of your apple a1060 battery . I pulled the plug on mine as soon as I read the article, and I'm now writing this on battery power.

On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up for apple a1045 battery . So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.

Remove the battery from the computer if you're like me and the laptop just sits on your desk for months at a time of Sony VGP-BPS10/B battery ,Sony VGP-BPS10/S battery . The only time I ever use the battery is when I go on infrequent trips. And that is the only time I need a charged battery.

The charging units need to be smarter and know to turn off when fully charged (some type of feedback?). Asking consumers to be constantly plugging/unplugging chargers is just a hassle when there are more user-friendly options available of apple a1022 battery . This also has relevance for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle owners, whose batteries have the same characteristics.

A car sitting in a garage for hours, full charged, is going to be slowly deteriorating the battery. Manufacturers may already be incorporating measures into battery packs to address this problem for Sony PCGA-BP71 battery , but this highlights just one of the many potential issues battery makers need to address in order to keep portable electrical devices functioning.

IPad is well ahead of its second-place competitor with e-books

Looking at future market share for e-book readers, the iPad, with 40 percent, is well ahead of its second-place competitor, Amazon's Kindle, which is expected to come in around 28 percent of Sony VGP-BPS10A battery . Barnes and Noble's Nook is down at 6 percent, and the nearly forgotten Sony Reader comes in at just 1 percent.

But obviously, the iPad is much more than an e-book reader, as ChangeWave's survey also demonstrates. Likely buyers were asked to list their top uses for the iPad, and reading e-books comes in third, after surfing the Web and checking email of apple a1060 battery . Of course, you should approach all consumer surveys with at least a little skepticism. After all, a survey released a month ago showed that people's interest in the iPad declined significantly after Apple's announcement.

The survey doesn't address how the iPad will impact the burgeoning market for tablet computers. But in one possible cautionary point for Apple, one in four likely iPad buyers state they will hold off on the purchase of another Apple product to get their hands on the iPad. After all, there's only so much disposable income to go around of Sony VGP-BPS10A/B battery .

In its latest incarnation, it's a paperback-esque 'digital journal' running? good old Windows 6 CE. Each Tegra-powered Courier will have dedicated cloud storage for images, documents, calendar items and contacts for apple a1045 battery . Engadget reckons it will also come with handwriting recognition, built-in camera and microphone jack, and form the centrepiece of a Microsoft ebook reader ecosystem when it launches in the autumn.

I'm not entirely convinced by that last info-nugget. At a meeting in Redmond last year, Microsoft's Chief Research Officer, Craig Mundie, and gadget supremo Robbie Bach pointed to rapidly improving netbooks as potential spoilers for ebooks and said that Microsoft would 'hesitate' to launch a reader if it couldn't scale up to a major business of Sony VGP-BPS10 battery ,Sony VGP-BPS10/S battery . With the iPad arriving next month, it looks like Microsoft might have hesitated just a shade too long.

Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra (PMC) has your Bach and so much more. On March 27th, 7:30 pm at the Mountain View United Methodist Church (355 Ponca Place, Boulder, CO), Pro Musica Colorado will be presenting "Bach and Beyond," taking listeners from the beauty of Bach to the musical hybridity of Golijov. Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Grammy-award winning Takács String Quartet, joins PMC in Bach’s Concerto in E Major for Violin and Orchestra.

Edward Dusinberre was born in 1968 in Leamington Spa, England, and enjoyed playing and performing from a young age. At the Royal College of Music in London, Edward studied with Felix Andrievsky and members of the Chilingirian Quartet. In 1990 he won the British Violin Recital Prize and gave his debut recital in London at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre. After graduating from the Royal College of Music, Edward continued his studies at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and Piotr Milewski. Edward's completion of his studies at Juilliard happily coincided with the opportunity to audition with the Takács Quartet which he joined in September 1993.

Also on the program is Haydn’s Symphony No. 44, the Trauer, a String Sinfonia by Mendelssohn, and Last Round, an evocative and poignant work by the two Grammy Award recipient, Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov.

“We were very thrilled to perform Golijov’s cantata, Oceana, with Ars Nova Singers two years ago, now we’re presenting a work of his that is perhaps more traditional,” says PMC Music Director, Cynthia Katsarelis.

This concert is the first of Pro Musica Colorado's brand new concert format called Far and Near. Each Far and Near concert will benefit other non-profit organizations close to home and far away. For the concert, PMC has teamed up with the Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA) and the Orchestras Feeding America campaign of the League of American Orchestras. PMC is encouraging their patrons to bring an item from the list on their website (www.promusicacolorado.org) to help support families in need in Boulder County. This is the near component.

For the far, they have partnered with Colorado Haiti Project, and will be asking for donations at the concert to give renewal, relief and hope to Haiti. In Haiti, Katsarelis, saw the power of music to bring people together while teaching at the Holy Trinity School of Music. 20% of all donations to Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra will go directly to the Colorado Haiti Project.

Tickets for this concert are $20 for adults, $15 for Seniors and $10 for Students, available online at www.promusicacolorado.org or by calling 303-776-5355.

For more information about Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra and their upcoming concerts, please visit www.promusicacolorado.org.

Is Online High School Right for Your Student?

Over the past several years, Colorado families have been the
beneficiary of the growth of online high school options. Colorado
online high schools have proven to be a valuable education choice for
many students and their families who are looking for an alternative to
the traditional school setting, whether because of learning style, life
or family circumstances. For many, virtual high schools have meant the
difference between giving up on school or graduating.

Whenstudents and their families begin to explore high school courses
online, what they find attractive is a quality education that features:

  • individualized learning plans,
  • courses tailored to students’ specific learning styles and levels,
  • flexible scheduling, and
  • real-time monitoring of student progress and success

“In a traditional school, time is fixed and learning is variable. At Provost Academy, learning is fixed and time is variable,” says Audie
Rubin, Executive Director of Provost Academy (www.co.provostacademy.com), a state-authorized public virtual high school that is free of charge to residents of Colorado.

Asa result of online educations ability to cater to the specific learning
needs of a student and its flexibility, Colorado’s online high schools
have been attracting a variety of students including those:

  • Seeking a more challenging learning environment,
  • Needing support and tutoring in order to stay on track for graduation,
  • Looking for a learning option that accounts for their personal learning style,
  • Trying to balance a full work schedule with their classes in order to help support the family, or
  • Pursuing long-term professional goals (such as becoming a pro athlete, actor or musician) while still trying to complete their highschool degree.

Once a family or student has determined that online high school maybe appropriate for their situation, choosing the one that meets the
needs of the student can be a challenge. Provost Academy Colorado, one
of the most trusted online high schools in Colorado, has put together a
simple assessment to determine if online learning is right for a
student (just put a check next to the boxes that are appropriate):

Academics
□ Consistently works ahead of the rest of the class
□ Consistently falls behind the rest of the class
□ Wants to take a classes that are not offered at his or her current school

School Life
□ Has been, or is being, bullied
□ Doesn’t enjoy the social component of school
□ School doesn’t align with family values

Life Outside of School
□ Attends time-consuming elite athletic, arts or music practice
□ Has a part-time job that contributes to the household income
□ Has significant family obligations (e.g., caring for a child, grandparent, brother or sister, or parent)

Personality
□ Takes pride in individualism
□ Often takes the path less traveled
□ Works well independently

Scoring: Add up the total checkmarks and use the guide below to see whether online high school is the best choice.

8-11 Points: Perfect Fit
Traditionalschool may be too rigid for your child. Whether due to their academic
level, outside commitments, or their independent personality, a
traditional school is, well, too traditional for your student. Online
high school can offer the flexibility and independence needed to
succeed.

4-7 Points: Compatible
While your student may becomfortable in a traditional school, a flexible classroom schedule may
be the extra added ingredient they need to excel. By setting their own
schedules, determining their own learning pace and having more
individualized learning paths, students often find the incentive they
need to achieve academic excellence and realize their dreams.

0-3 Points: Option to Consider
Atraditional high-school setting seems to be working for your child.
However, the benefits of online high school are many. Adaptable
curriculum, schedules and more individualized attention can benefit
students of many backgrounds, personalities, or academic ability. You
may want to research the online education options available to your son
or daughter to compare them with your student’s current school.

Themost important objective is that all high-schoolers successfully
complete their education in the learning environment that is best for
them. Thanks to technological innovations and the commitment of
educators, online learning is a new, worthwhile option to consider in
Colorado.

An astonishing 40 percent of Americans have either experienced or know someone who has experienced an eating disorder, yet misperceptions about these devastating diseases are still plentiful. To build understanding and awareness during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 21-27), Eating Recovery Center (www.eatingrecoverycenter.com), a licensed and Joint Commission accredited behavioral hospital providing comprehensive treatment and sustainable recovery for eating disorders, reveals five eye-opening eating disorder facts that are not widely known.

  1. 1. Eating disorders are genetic. An individual with an anorexic mother or sister is 12 times more likely to develop anorexia nervosa and four times more likely to develop bulimia nervosa. These are not disorders of choice.
  2. 2. Eating disorders are the deadliest mental illness. A woman with anorexia nervosa is 5.6 times more likely to die than another woman of her same age. The most frequent causes of death from eating disorders are suicide (32%), complications associated with anorexia (19%), and cancer (11%). The average age of death for an individual with anorexia is only 34 years.
  3. 3. The circumstances that cause an eating disorder often have nothing to do with the reasons it continues. An illness, traumatic experience or diet may initiate an eating disorder. However, an individual’s underlying personality traits, values and fears are what can prohibit recovery.
  4. 4. Eating disorders are not merely triggered by a desire to be thin. For instance, an individual who does not know that he or she has wheat or lactose intolerance may develop a fear of food due to the discomfort or pain it causes. Someone in chemotherapy or with a gastrointestinal disorder may stop eating to avoid nausea.
  5. 5. People can completely recover from eating disorders. Eating disorders are not addictions and do not have to lead to lifelong struggles with food. With proper treatment, individuals can completely recover from eating disorders.

“The fact is that eating disorders are complex, biologically based mental illnesses. They can arise from a variety of potential causes and affect a wide demographic of Americans,” explains Kenneth L. Weiner, MD, CEDS, founding partner and medical director of Eating Recovery Center. “In our society, eating disorders carry stigmas that too often prevent people from seeking help. Awareness minimizes misconceptions and is vital to help the millions of people with eating disorders feel comfortable finding the treatment they need.”
